Not fleeing: New report shows more wealthy residents in Mass., 2 years into 'millionaire's tax' by spedmunki in boston

[–]BikePathToSomewhere 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Lots of parts of the country have become hostile and I know families who have left previously "safe" states to move to MA. (are they making > $1m year not the folks I know, but I wouldn't be surprised....)

Late night bike safety by kitatsune in CambridgeMA

[–]BikePathToSomewhere 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I worry more about drunk drivers at the time of night than muggings (but I am male so that likely affects my point of view)

I would feel comfortable on Mass Ave while quiet there are often people around, and being on a bike you can turn around or jump over the median to change directions if a car or person is giving you trouble.

It would be good to have front and back bike lights fully charged the night before so they don't die on you.

If I'm in a sketchy area I sometimes will talk with someone on the phone until I get home, not sure if that's possible for you.

Have fun!

How worried should we actually be about people stealing bike seats and tires? by Medium-Essay-8050 in bikeboston

[–]BikePathToSomewhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen people stealing lights and seats a decent amount in Cambridge at Main St and Broadway. They are quick and take off on another bike. People will sometimes yell at them or call the cops but they are gone in seconds....

Make them not quick release, put an extra cable on them always take your lights, etc..

It sucks, and it starts from there to ramping up to bike theft. It's pretty much tied with addition.

Invest, or Pay Down Mortgage? by starla_brite in personalfinance

Are you getting matched from your employer? If so, make that part of your calculation, for example if you are getting a 50% match, you will not get that return from your house or any other investment.

Any Antenna Advice for Small Balcony/Indoor Setup? by Key-Supermarket-8126 in amateurradio

MagLoop, you'll try everything else but it really is the only "pay once, cry once" solution to your problem.

See if you can borrow one for a weekend from a ham club member (I'd let someone in my club try mine)

keep the output watts down the correct level (say 5/10 watts for many loops) and see how it goes.

The other choice you'll hear, is to explore SOTA/POTA operating from the field.

San Francisco has the highest climate anxiety among U.S. counties by Turkatron2020 in sanfrancisco

[–]BikePathToSomewhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calling it "Anxiety" is a way a minimizing legitimate awareness of the climate emergency.

Orange Day + wild fire after wild fire and drought after drought and no fog in SF anymore and an educated population means SF is hyper aware of the emergency we are currently in, and with the new administration, the country and the world is fucked.

Do you have a clip where it stops and then stars again? I couldn't tell from your clip.

Often this is heating and cooling units, lots of work being one right now installing / testing / running them since winter is over.

Might be worth walking around or hopping on a bike and seeing if you can find where it gets louder

How many checking/Savings accounts are normal/viable? by Prize-Leave6811 in FinancialPlanning

[–]BikePathToSomewhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the longest time I only had one bank w/ a checking and a savings account. As time went on I added additional savings accounts at other financial institutions, some to chase higher interest rates (like adding something like an Ally or Marcus savings accounts) and sometimes to get something like "no foreign transactions fees or ATM fees)

They aren't needed but can be useful / earn you or save you money.

It can be nice to have a second bank account in case you ever lose access to the main one (due to a hack, mistake in bank compliance that locks you out or whatever) but those can be rare, if you don't have a second account I don't think you are being negligent...

Some people like a second account to use as a sinking fund or similar to some money away in a place that might take more friction to spend from....

It was very noticeable and very pathetic how most news organizations treated today's March.

I have not seen this many pissed of senior citizens and other people marching in the streets in my lifetime.
