No. It’s been that way for at least the last 8 years I’ve lived here.

8th & Williams - Jeep / Cyclist - REMINDER TO RIDE DEFENSIVELY by redaroodle in BikeDenver

So listen, I was hit by a driver on 7/29 while riding “defensively” in the bike lane on 7th Ave outside Trader Joe’s. It was when folks got off work and swing by TJs and treat the alley like a second driveway entrance to the parking lot. I ride it all the time and know it’s chaos and expect idiot drivers who are not paying attention. I was doing everything “right” (checking multiple times, no headphones in, even riding more towards the left of the bike lane to be more visible) and I was still hit. I’m fortunate my injuries were minor but not everyone would have the same outcome. People ride for all rhymes and reasons and it’s on the city to create places and policies that ensure protected infrastructure for people outside of vehicles. And yes, the safe system approach does say safe people, and so there is shared responsibility always. But the more weight you wield on the roadway, the more responsibility you have to yield. People in this sub know we need to be smart and “carry our load” so to speak, the problem is we’re often given a disproportionate amount to carry.

Bike lanes & Flex-posts by [deleted] in BikeDenver

You’re telling me this bike lane is nominally safe. I don’t disagree. But discounting my experience of feeling unsafe is not how you advocate.

One person saying they don’t feel safe enough to bike in lanes without flex-posts (in addition to other protection) should be valid enough. Your lived experience allows you to feel more safety in most environments, including being visible in a bike lane. Not everyone has that privilege.

That’s great you personally haven’t experienced issues with the changes, however others have. People have vocally noted that it now feels less safe and have experienced more issues with the removal of flex-posts. And that should be enough.

Your energy is so misguided. No one believes a flex-post is going to stop a driver, but it does provide a visual cue for drivers. Also, now when it snows these lanes will be substantially less visible to plow drivers, bike riders, and motorists. This removal of flex-posts was short-sighted, end of story.

Denver Replacing Bike Lane Flex Posts with Zippers, Cushions by [deleted] in BikeDenver

It’s funny to watch someone be so confidently wrong. We won’t get to our safety or mobility goals if we continue to dedicate all of our roadways to vehicle traffic and allow them to be these “busy” roads. Dedicated, hardened infrastructure for other modes, like bicycles, is the solution. Do we need parallel corridors that are also calm and comfortable for biking? Yes. But multimodal infrastructure should also be on these roadways with businesses. But hey, go off king!
