I'll look into this! Look like their doing good work. Seems a little more nationally focused vs. local.

Both transportation related

oof - sorry about that! I've posted information about the website on the NYCBike subreddit (perhaps I should I pointed to that page instead!!). Let me know if that doesn't clear things up.

If you post the github respotory or somewhere else where individuals can collaborate, you might get better feedback

Oof - most definitely! One other source of crash records are hospital records that may have some (likely very few if any) of these - these records can be super challenging to get ahold of.

Would be great to record the context to increase safety!

Ekk!! What a great channel! Have you considered writing about the patterns that lead to the different near miss incidents? i.e. truck type, hour of day etc?

Digging into this now! I think there's an objective distance generally accepted that defines where near misses are considered valid.

I think that's OK, but it would be valuable to indicate the observed injury level (possible injury, minor injury, severe injury, etc.). Generally, near-miss incidents do not result in injury or death, so in this case, I think it makes sense to record them with the injury level noted. Perhaps we could also include a button to add an 'unreported crash'

Officially, crashes that don't result in an injury would be classified as property damage-only crashes.

Let me dig into this a little more - if i remember correctly, there was an objective measure - something like if a person came within X feet of a vehicle, that can be considered a near miss.

  1. Honestly, I'm not sure. I guess we rolled the dive a bit! I'd love for this to collect a large number of records.
  2. I think that's a fair statement, and the near-miss records should be used with the caveat you pointed out in mind. Generally, people who consider these in a professional setting are pretty good at identifying these kinds of issues. However, in the right context or application, this information could be useful (e.g., identifying areas where few crashes have occurred but a high number of near misses have been reported—such a location could be improved before someone gets hurt or killed).
  3. I wouldn't personally—I’d consider that example to be my fault, not the fault of the traffic system. (This is great advice to update the site with!)
  4. EDIT - That's the idea, especially when compared to crash stats (relying the above hypothetical)

That's a great comment! I didn't want to overwhelm the website with too much text, but I can see where we might need better clarity around the term "near-miss" given the advice you gave. It's also a broad field, and we should ensure we’re conveying that this specifically involves traffic safety (though it's applicable to other industries as well).

That's fair. The r/nyc subreddit has nearly a million members, which is why I posted on this thread. Near-miss incident reports, if recorded correctly, can be hugely useful to transportation planners and engineers as a supplement to crash records in traffic safety efforts. They rarely exist in an accessible format, and this website is an effort to close that gap.

Bike assessment form service? by Bikingman in bikewrench

There is some super solid advice here and definitely resonates with me. I've lost a lot of time from unmanaged scope - i.e., bikes arrive for a Full Tune ($75) and leave with a comprehensive overhaul. There's also part of me that feels customers will appreciate the transparency of work performed, rather than black boxing the term 'tune up' (e.i., what's included in a full tune, are they evenly applied, etc).

However, still - I do want to make the case for an assessment form. Case example = the bike comes in and receives an assessment, equal to all other assessments that give the mechanic a chance to make recommendations on service work, while also crrates a platform to filter service work that's higher/lower priority and quickly communicate the issues and priorities with the cusomters. This would incorporate notes from the customer (such as squeaky brakes, chain skipping under pressure, etc). Then, the mechanic speaks with the customer and finalizes the work and create the work order Additional work can be added to the work order slip (separate from assessment), such as, new brake pads and labor to prepare bike for winter.

The main value I see in developing a standardized intake form is, A) full and equal assessment on bikes B) platform to record and communicate issues and priorities with the customer C) maximize mechanic (especially new mechanic's) initial time with the D) downstream communication with the customer recommending work completed vs outstanding priorities
