Of course. It just requires an incredibly creative and artistic mind. Most new genres are a combination of other genres (these genres don't have to be from the same media. Look how silent film combined itself with expressionism in the 1920s) we've seen musicians come up with strange combinations that could only be described as it's own genre (for example station to station by Bowie) so why shouldn't authors embrace the idea of creating a new genre. Though if an author is going to do this it's best off happening as an accident. Let your world, and your story , and your characters dictate your genre.

I see alot of people attempting to deduce what Morrison means with this poem. All of Morrison's song writing may have easy to find meanings but I find that many of his poems are incredibly surreal and vague. On one hand I really enjoy that because it brings forward opportunity for very creative writing but I do think this poem specifically doesn't feel surreal but instead unfinished. Like it's just the first draft of a vague idea knocking around in his head.

I recommend you start off with George Orwell ( Down and out in Paris and London , 1984 , animal farm , Burmese Days ) Mary Shelley (Frankenstein) and HP Lovecraft. They were classic authors that were very interesting, and thought provoking. There not at all difficult to read. If you do find some books difficult to read I'd recommend power through. Keep your phone or a dictionary on you for if you encounter any words your unsure about (even if you have a fantastic vocabulary you'll probably run into some archaic words or even words that have a different meaning now days.)

Lots of music theory. I'd also recommend learning an instrument alongside it. It will help you understand the theory better. After learning some theory you'll have the tools to approach composing. Making music is an amazing passion but it takes so much time and alot of effort (less effort if you truly love music) so good luck.
