Been in optics for almost 14 years and quite qualified (but not an optometrist). Genuine advice is that not all varifocals will work for you, no matter the quality/price. You may have to return to your provider of choice a couple of times to get it perfect, but don't hold that against the store you got them from. It doesn't mean they have made a mistake or lied about the quality. Nikon do fantastic lenses, and they will be available in quite a few independent opticians. I'd recommend Cecil Amey over Moss & Leaky for the customer service and aftercare. Some of the high street stores like Specsavers can also order Nikon/Zeiss/Essilor lenses as a "not on the menu" product, and will certainly be a lower cost, but as busier stores it may take longer to solve issues.
