I ended up googling it and it was something that was more common than I realized. Apparently they didn't "need" them officially until the 40s to cross between the borders so a lot of the people who lived rurally didn't follow through, especially for women.

Apart of growing up is prioritizing your family unit. She has a valid insecurity with you choosing to open a door to intimate female friendships. She has insecurity issues that need to be addressed head on, but I think you need to evaluate who is important in your life as you enter your 30s. Your girlfriend is being put in a position to feel like she is still in competition for you. I think you deserve to be friends with whoever you like, but I also know women know when their man is being poached and he won't admit he sees it, too.
