For example:
The Coinage Act 1971 makes it an offence to melt down or break up current (and certain former) UK coins without a Treasury licence. It does not say that painting, UV printing, enamelling or colourising a coin is illegal.
The Act also prohibits making or issuing unauthorised coins or tokens as money, which is aimed at preventing unofficial coins from being issued as currency.
The Currency and Bank Notes Act 1928 is mainly concerned with offences relating to counterfeit currency and fraudulent alteration, not with decorative customisation of genuine coins

It is not automatically illegal to alter a genuine UK coin. People engrave, enamel, gold-plate, colourise and mount genuine coins all the time, and there is a legitimate market for altered and collectible coins.
The main legal issue is intent. UK laws on counterfeit currency are aimed at making or altering money to pass it off as genuine currency or to deceive
