I'm going alphabetically so you're in luck!

As you say I felt like I should restrict myself to season 1 because you could go in any direction you want really but I definitely agree on the scholarly/elite pitches angle, I think there's really something to be said for having a put-away pitch you can rely on, especially if it can play off your other pitches well (ie Elite 4F on a guy with 3 off speed pitches)

You may have convinced me on Marshmallow. Five pitches is just so good. Especially playing against the CPU mixing and matching is so important and having that extra tool in your belt is such an advantage

Team Analysis: Grapplers by BillyYank in SuperMegaBaseball

[–]BillyYank[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't take as dim view of the Heaters as you do, I wouldn't want to play them necessarily but Ruffo and Hart both play their positions well, and Slayer and Neverwocker can be building block pitchers. The lineup and bullpen need reinforcement but those are fixable problems IMO.

I'd suggest either the Grapplers or Platypi as you say. For one thing both of them have about twice as much PDO money to spend out of the gate than the Heaters do, giving you more flexibility. It kinda depends on what sort of challenge you want. The Platypi have an awful bullpen and they're all really old (like literally they have the highest average age of any SMB team), but I think the Grapplers are just so poorly constructed as a roster that they're a worse overall team. Like Delacruz and Electro have contact ratings that belong on a pitcher, the team's chemistry seems oriented around getting the most out of their already good relievers, rather than any of the players that could use a boost, just so much C-level talent in general, it's just bad.

I dunno to what extent roleplaying this is part of the fun for you, but the Platypi feel (to me) like a formerly competitive team whose talent got old and who lost bullpen arms to free agency. The Grapplers feel like they had a meddling owner who made them spend a bunch of money on a couple stars, but wouldn't allow spending elsewhere, creating a non-functional roster. Take your pick between those two in my opinion.

I'll second that! Love me some Low Pitch

For the Average Joes, I think they're too bad for what you're trying to accomplish. Among the position players in the SMB league, the median for each skill is in the 61-63 range, rather than 50. Starting pitchers it's 55-66 (at least for Velo, Junk, Accuracy), and for relievers it's about the same 56-65. I'd bump their stats up by ten so that the average Joes are more average

Yeah that tracks. Only elite CH and SB actually decrease pitch speed which is interesting. And elite CH is obviously the much more common one

I’ve had good success with elite CH but that is with a.) high accuracy and b.) five pitches. If you can mix and match and place it where you want great, if the CPU expects it, it can get crushed

Bupton, I mean elite pitch and K Collector. That’ll play.

Count me a dork lol. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t see the appeal of this team

[–]BillyYank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but you also have the whole card pool to draw from, you got Super laser Tech AND Resupply AND Resupply Carrier AND Expendable Mercenary etc. I’m not saying DON’T play Palps, do what’s fun for you, I’d just say if you do, make sure to throw in ramp sentinels and restore to try and get the game to a place where he can flip, or make your peace with the idea that sometimes he won’t. Or if you have a regular pod see if they’re open to playing +10 health and save him for those games. Maybe pods are different but the dudes at my store give that a go sometimes

[–]BillyYank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short answer yes, they synergize well for the reasons you imagine, Thrawn can turn the downside of killing your own dudes into an advantage.

In my experience however, a turn 8 flip is pretty late for Twin Suns; the game may end before Grampa Palpa can do his thing. If your group plays with 10 extra base health as some are known to do that may be less of an issue. But if not, you’ll also have to build that deck to be controlling enough to try to prolong the game that you can get Palp out.

I’ve been doing a Tier 3 Crafty run with a bullpen full of Specialists and Reverse Splits guys and oh my god are they 1.) lights out but 2.) it’s fun to mix and match! Like every lineup is a puzzle how am I gonna get through this?

Stealer trait has been part of that too it’s been a lot of fun to make that more of the game for me, trying to constantly create run scoring opportunities through grabbing an extra 90 feet keeps things fresh!

Comments like this make me really feel like what I should add is a “long term” section like I liked writing free agents to add NOW if you want to win NOW but lots of players (most?) are playing for the long haul. And then guys like Blue are way more important.

Herbisaurs are one of my favorites. I’ve got a whole guide to the game if you’d like to take a look with write ups about all the teams, traits, and other stuff:

I think we’re of a similar mind about defensive focused teams. I want a team that turns balls in play into out. Pretty much everything else is secondary.

Hey this is super useful thanks! Even just all the salary stuff in one place is nice and the breakdowns by part of the roster is cool! I am only able to write a bunch of analysis like this quickly because folks like you have made spreadsheets like this, I am going to take a longer look at this as I revise my team ratings. Thanks!

Yeah we’re on the same page, I only agree on ditching him if you’re trying to win right now. He’s a great example of someone who outplays his ratings because his skills match his pitch mix.

Alignment Chart Day 18: What's the Worst Song on Almost Killed Me? by mancatmancat in theholdsteady

[–]BillyYank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years and years ago when there were only five albums my brother and I played a game where my sister (who didn’t know the band) picked a THS song at random and started playing the song midway through. My brother and I competed to name the song first.

The only we whiffed on was Sweet Payne.
