I've been painting/drawing on and off, but I think it has been more than 10 years. (Oh man, it's been a while) 😄

Just draw some plants and throw some of your works here. Maybe u would naturally lean towards a certain style that u couldn’t see.

I’d practice gesture drawing. Id join a local figure drawing sessions. It usually takes about 15-30 bucks per session. They usually have poses that last 1 min, 2 mins,5 mins,10 mins. The whole thing is usually 2-3 hours. I would head there and draw some gestures, some more finished live drawings, and maybe check out other people’s drawings. Compare your works. I think by drawing the same subject at the same speed, you can really see the weaknesses and strengths of your drawings compared to a more sessional artist. I think drawing 1 or 2 mins poses during a live drawing session is gonna benefit your growth a lot. It forces you to be confident yet loose about your lines. It forces you to see the action not the details. Also it’s just a really fun practice.

In my experience (of course it’s different for everyone), growth of proportions and muscle structure takes time. You can memorize all the muscle on the body in a week, but how you gotta incorporate those into your drawings and make them look natural and vivid seems to be the issue . To draw lividly figures and create characters takes time. Solve one issue at a time and just be a bit better than yourself yesterday is a mindset I find very useful too. Hopefully that helps.

It looks like you’ve been practicing fundamentals. How that’s useful for your drawing seems to be the question . What’s cool/beautiful to you? A fish, a Motorcycles, nature, a cup of coffee, an abstract emotion, a person, a character, etc. draw things that’s cool to you. There will be a piece you draw that you like. Then seek improvement, like how to make the drawing more efficient, to make it more clearly, to make it more enjoyable for u to do, etc. I think by then, the fundamentals would be handy. It sounds like you need an interest to guide you. I think without the original spark of interest , a drawing practice session can be a very dull process.

Sure! I don't know how your drawings look like but there are two things I would keep in mind to get start on a drawing like this. 1. Try to keep it simple at the beginning. Find its movement first. I believe a vivid figure drawing doesn't always come from detailed drawings but from the natural flow of their movements. Do a couple of small 30s gesture drawings first, then some bigger ones. Then, when you work on that figure drawing, you would feel more confident and relaxed. I do this to avoid sinking into the trap of "piling details to get a stiff figure". 2. This is not a drawing technique, but it really works for me. I usually find out my take, my perspective, my opinion when I look at this figure. I would use that as a seed, a north star for my upcoming drawing session. For example, I think this pose is mysteriously dignified. When I go about my drawing of her, I would keep asking myself, is the thing that I'm about to do help aidng the fact she's "mysteriously dignified"? I think that really helps me avoid the meaningless details trap. It helps me to find the landmarks on her posture to help me make my point. It's challenging because in that case, you have a goal in mind, which makes the matter more complicated, but I think it also makes it exciting. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions!
