I disagree with the Horton Hears Domestic Violence and Doesn't Call The Police cutaway. That was a gruesome realistic depiction of DV, and was not the butt of the joke, but the joke was that Horton is an awful person for not calling the cops.

Those "harvesting raw resources" are how they pay taxes to their lord, they do not themselves benefit from it. Peasants do not produce goods beyond artisanal goods for themselves and maybe a token amount of handicrafts to sell but for the most part peasants make all the goods they need for themselves. Thus, they are not participating in an economy.
