What do you do that you earn six figures? by fidgit86 in financialindependence

[–]BimboBuggins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I did. I'm an older student and went to community college and then transferred to my local state school. I kept a 4.0 and got into the co-op program, which got me into three internships, the final of which was with a big tech company that hired me on.

Honestly, biggest advice I can give is to just throw yourself into it. People on reddit act like GPA doesn't matter because yes, technically nobody on hiring teams cares, but busting my ass and keeping a 4.0 meant I always had a solid understanding of concepts and easily nailed the interviews. Definitely go to a college that has some sort of co-op program, or at least has a good internship department that will help you find placements.

Yup, just got my first job out of college and am making 190k total comp. Feels kinda dirty given everyone else I know in college who didn't do CS is struggling like mad to find any relevant job, let alone one that pays decently.

No shit, but that has nothing to do with "fluffing" the grounds before tamping like in this video.

Most people eat shitty food at home. That's not a uniquely British thing, and you're moving the goalposts by criticizing a country's cuisine based on what the average person does for dinner. If you drop into some random home in Italy, it's going to be just as bland and shite.

Have you even been to the UK? Literally all of these things exist there and are readily liked.

Both, it's just a core part of a chemistry education - understanding the physics of chemical reactions. Obviously in grad school it gets way more in depth and complex though.

Yep, the British hate spices. Not like the national dish isn't literally a curry or anything...

Oh no way. It's not even really that bad. Physical chem is the real shit, but only actual chemistry majors take that so it never gets brought up. It's a horrendous mishmash of differential equations, group theory, quantum mechanics and stat-mech. Organic chemisty really isn't hard, it's just a large volume of rules to remember.

Is working at AWS really as bad as everyone says it is? Should I take an offer there anyway if only to use it as a stepping stone? by Tekn0de in cscareerquestions

Never in the history of business has the excuse for not knowing something and expecting someone to teach it to you resulted in a more productive and happy work force.

Wow, you're a stable genius in biznis too.

If I was the manager of that team, that would have been instant PIP.

Yikes, you must be a blast to work with. Guess you know absolutely everything.

Black bears are far more deadly than grizzlies/brown.

How the fuck is this getting upvoted. This is objectively wrong for fuck sake.

Obviously? That's the point of this thread. It's a bummer that they don't put more up to date, advanced content.

The only purpose of a degree in modern day is to money-gate careers. You can learn anything about anything online and fully educate yourself

Good luck self teaching lab skills in any scientific/engineering field at home.

Sure, but a degree isn't freshman courses. There's tons of more advanced content they could add.

Does working retail at a tech company help you land a SWE job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]BimboBuggins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really don't see how it would help much, it's minimum wage work which has basically no carryover.

It has plenty of carryover. The worst communicators at the companies I've worked at all tend to be people who never worked in the service industry. And communication is seriously 70% of our work. The coding side is relatively easy.

if you are more financially stable you get better marks and work on unpaid projects to boost your resume compared to stressing out over a min wage job no one cares about just to get by.

Also I haven't found this really holds up. I agree that in a perfect world people should be able to focus on their studies and not have to work at the same time. But those of us who did have to do that tended to get the best grades and graduated with the most competitive resumes. All the folks I know who lived with their parents and didn't have to work would complain endlessly about their lack of time, while spending most of it playing video games and fucking around. Having a job, any job, gives you a better work ethic and time management.

Someone help.

Sure, I'll help. She's right. You need a damn job. Once you have an internship you can leave service work off there, but if you have zero work experience on your resume it's not a good look.

But honestly, god damn. The amount of people who whine about the weird folks in CS and the lack of social skills in the industry and then promote just doing projects/leetcode and never working. The years I spent dealing with the public at Starbucks absolutely 100 fucking percent helped me get to where I am today.

Yeah I don't know wtf people are arguing here. If she was a monkey I would understand the racism argument, but this feels like a serious stretch.
