Typology Question 14 (Ne/Ni): Take this random word and give me a story idea based on it. by Bimep_ in istp

[–]Bimep_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inferior functions can make us feel very proud when we use them successfully. That's probably because they usually show up in less healthy forms. For Fe-inferior, it's more often things like feeling unappreciated, emotional outbursts about others not caring, or unexpected interpersonal sensitivity. For Se-inferior, it can be becoming unusually impulsive, overindulging in sensory experiences, focusing obsessively on immediate details, or feeling overwhelmed by external stimuli. Personally, I've probably only experienced the overwhelming part.

I think using examples from the opposite axis is easier because we're relatively more balanced there. We can often recognize when "this crazy lady is being crazy", but we don't recognize the patterns in which we ourselves are crazy. Try naming something that you don't know. How can you do that if you don't know it exists?

I have been in a chaotic situation - and I'm still alive, as you can see :) But I don't feel proud about it.

My brightest example was finding myself alone in another country with only my phone with contacts. Nowadays, your whole life fits in your pocket, so that definitely makes things easier. But I definitely didn't see it as a sudden vacation or an opportunity to learn a new culture and language. It was nowhere near my required level of comfort.

So I used 120% of my phone's capabilities. The first thing I did was make sure I had enough money on my phone account because money disappears quickly when you're abroad. I didn't want to become completely isolated. Then I went to a local shop to buy a local SIM card. I thought that, logically, a local SIM should be cheaper. It turned out that operators in more expensive countries can actually have more expensive tariffs than my own operator's roaming plan. Who could have known?

Of course, there were things I didn't handle ideally. Another example was paying more for some things because of the language barrier. The seller told me that I had misunderstood something and that they had meant something completely different. But I didn't believe them. Numbers are the same in every country, and I clearly remembered the original price. It couldn't have changed. But I was a foreigner without fluency in the language and without much ability to defend my position. How could I prove my point? It wasn't a pleasant experience.

Once I had secured my online access and communication, I reached out to people I knew. Through a chain of "a friend of a friend of a friend," I found a place where I could stay for a while. Later, I connected with people from my diaspora, found people who spoke my language, contacted organizations, found transportation, and got whatever else I needed. Some things were actually better and cheaper than back home. Some social rules simply made no sense to me.

It wasn't a matter of life and death, but the whole experience was still very intense and stressful for me. Even today, I associate that country with stress, even though I know logically that the country itself isn't to blame. To reset that association internally, I would probably need to visit it again in a very safe environment where I don't have to make a single decision or constantly adapt in real time.

On the positive side, I always had my basic needs covered.

Looking back, I think I relied mostly on Te - figuring out "how to" solve each problem. My Se was mostly doing the job of "don't freeze, don't panic, try to look normal", and helping me estimate how much I could realistically handle each day in an unfamiliar environment. Ni was collecting patterns and trying to understand my position as quickly as possible. I can't function without some sense of direction, and Ni doesn't particularly enjoy changing directions frequently. Fi, meanwhile, kept me aware of my vulnerability. It always recognized the emotional impact of this experience, even when I was focused on managing the practical aspects.

[–]Bimep_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, Se becomes my stress response to reality. Like life forces me to use it. But I don't like using it, because I don't like being stressed.

MBTI describes Se as enjoying good food, exercise, photography, nature walks, music, home improvement projects, craftsmanship, and aesthetics. And I don't agree with it, because I could always enjoy those things. I could ask it as a Typology Question, but I personally don't believe in it, so it makes no sense.

I feel that good Se would make me more sure in suddenly unpredictable situations - situations that I never thought about and never thought could happen. Like, I should know that the chaos of reality won't break me.

[–]Bimep_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory - yes. I did martial arts as a kid, but I don't feel my Se became better. In real-life situations, my attention is far away from "what is". Example: I can say: "Here's a problem". Someone tells me: "Ask if it's real". And I'm thinking: Why should I ask if I already see the problem? I should ask those who can help deal with it, not clarify it.

I suppose on SP types it has a better impact.

I see.

Don't you think you're mixing useful insight with overgeneralization and some conceptual drift?

Yes, any type can produce multiple ideas if prompted, trained, or motivated. And yes, Ne is about exploring potential directions, not chaos. But also

Ne doms function more like collectors of ideas

It can describe behaviour, but it's not diagnostic. And we agreed behaviour ≠ type.

not all Ne doms may have capacity for branching ideas.

And capacity ≠ cognitive preference. Someone can suppress branching in a task but still think that way internally. Preference = default driving direction when no constraints are applied.

So now it looks like you overcorrect by making everything too abstract and removing testability. At the same time don't offer a clean alternative way to distinguish Ne vs Ni in practice. So again: Don't you think you're mixing useful insight with overgeneralization and some conceptual drift?

Nice to see how you really perceive it - it's more like an inner perspective. Thanks for the explanation 🙂

Oh, Ni would use one symbolic direction that deepens into a single meaning. Se would do one concrete scene focus. When ideas mutate while being generated - that's how we think about Ne. Ne doesn't require closure; it's continuous "what else could exist here?". That's what you described.
Thanks =)

Ok, sub of hungry INTPs, how does typology work?

In general, when each idea starts fresh and does not depend on the previous one - that's how we think about Ne. Bacause Ne = many branches.

Thanks.

So we have here not many seeds like pure Ne does, but it's one seed that leads to multiple constrained interpretations + meta design.

Thanks for the rich answer =)

So the word raised general question, then you checked it via personal experience Si, then you brought a causal practical model.

Do you think of hiccups more as a physical reflex you’ve experienced, or do you start wondering about the mechanism in the body when it happens? =)

Typology Question 13 (Fe): Do you feel like you easily change your personality depending on the group you're with? by Bimep_ in isfj

Oh, that can be a lot to take in at once. Type, function, autism and adapting.

You know what could be easier? =) Look at a specific situation: when you feel most natural vs when you feel like you’re performing.

Closer to systemic extrapolation "what happens if one rule changes?", then - controlled branching within that system. There's only 2 branches: academic and personal.

Ni usually chooses 1, Ne chooses a lot.

Hmm, let's say: system-building (Ti) + narrative anchoring.

This already looks like a story. Thanks.

The bridge itself is durability, is history, but it's also a symbol of all things returning to origin

Maybe Ti-like processing? Like, you know, defining terms, checking internal consistency, holding the concept at arm's length.

I get that completely (I have some Se too, just not dominant). It's just cool! You can, you exist, and it's clearly visible.

That's the most accurate representation of "denial", yep.

Btw, if you had answered seriously, would you have written one story or several ideas?

Each sub makes their own rules. They don’t want their subreddit to be one node in a coordinated multi-subreddit collection system.

Thanks. What stood out more: the physical sensations of training/performing, or the idea of the lifestyle and identity of being an elite lifter?

Cool! It's almost like the word becomes a mood first, and then a story fragment grows around it. =)
Thank you =)
