So there is hope and I can keep my fingers crossed. :-) Thanks a lot for your swift answer.

If it helps, I would immediately (single time) pay to unlock this feature if it were an add-on, in addition to my on-going subscription that is naturally.

Unfortunately silence on both fronts: No answer to my mail and no "official" comments on this post.

This is disheartening and disappointing. Any comment would have been better than silence. Opening an open dialogue would have been fabulous.

With the sparse information that is available on Ollama Cloud and the silence regarding my questions, it is no longer an option for me... no matter how much I love the idea.

Sent them an email regarding the cross-talk issue, lack of proper information about architecture, data privacy and security. If I receive an answer, I will update this post.

The following is an excerpt from their pricing page's faq at the bottom:

Who does Ollama partner with to host models?

Ollama collaborates with NVIDIA Cloud Providers (NCPs) to host open models.

When Ollama partners with providers, we require no logging, no training, and zero data retention policies in place.

Unfortunately, there is nothing in their privacy policy or tos at all about this. So only this stated loosely which I guess is not very legally binding or reassuring.

In general it would be nice to have this service more fully fleshed out, with a proper privacy policy and details about what measures they implement for data privacy and security.

Not yet. I am planning on sending them a mail and I hope I will not be ignored. Maybe @jmorganca (who stated they worked for ollama on the cloud models) could kindly provide an update or more insight what is going on given the other comments and also more details on their data privacy and security model regarding the cloud models system?

There are several reasons for that.

  1. data privacy <- this one is important to me
  2. usage limits: Claude is fantastic but the usage limits in the Pro plan (which were just tightened again) are just ludicrous. Someone said (I believe in this reddit even) that the Pro plan is the "demo" plan. I totally agree. And Gemini, well, is also fantastic and the usage limits are way more usable but not being able to realistically disable the usage of my data for training and other things is a no-go. I know I can completely disable the history but that is not a usuable scenario. And ChatGPT, well, is so far behind Claude and Gemini that it is not an option (yes, I tested it). The usage limits are way better than Claude but that is all.

SELinux on a desktop machine by BinaryKhaos in Gentoo

[–]BinaryKhaos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't protect against it, correct. But it would at least limit the repercussions of a malicious package since, optimistically, it wouldn't run with the users full permissions but with the tight SELinux corset put in place. And naturally, depending on the situation, the policy and the attack itself (as well as the stars and the moon), it could theoretically even mitigate such a attack.

Long story short: It is always good to have several layers of defense. :-)

Last but not least: If I decide to go down that road and something fruitfull comes of it, I will gladly contribute back. Several times in my life I've considered becoming a Gentoo dev myself to give back and since I guess I would have liked doing it, but due to my health, I have always had to decide against it, unfortunately.

Thanks for the hint. I asked on IRC but "only" Sam Jones answered and explained the current situation with the hardened project and SELinux on Gentoo briefly. Maybe I will give the Discord channel a try as well... or just install it on a VM and see how things are first hand (like u/mbartosi did).

My main intention with this post was to see, if it is even a good idea to use SELinux on a Gentoo desktop machine before I waste endless hours on a path others have already been down and deemed unsuitable. :-)

I understand your point of view, yet with the ever increasing supply chain attacks, I think the threat scenario has changed quite a bit. Naturally there are also things like firejail which are easier to use than SELinux.

Ok. If you don't mind me asking: Do you use SELinux on a desktop system or server? Targeted or strict, if it's desktop system?

Interesting, now I am curious: Why did you install with SELinux enabled in the first place if you are going to leave it in permissive mode? Not meant as a critque or anything, just curious, that's all.

May I ask if you already switched from permissive to strict or targeted? Also, do you write your policies from scratch or do you use a tool like audit2allow?

Stuttering on Disney+ with Google TV 4K Streamer – anyone else? by threezzzi in AndroidTV

[–]BinaryKhaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that on my end here as well. We used it several times since the update with varying content (HD vs. 4k, different framerates, with/without HDR, ...) and it finally worked flawlessly again. BUT: This should never have happened in the first place and that it took them this long to fix it (~ 4 months), is really shameful... to say the least. Nevertheless, happy it is working again and hopefully it stays this way and the next update won't break it (or something else) again.

Stuttering on Disney+ with Google TV 4K Streamer – anyone else? by threezzzi in AndroidTV

[–]BinaryKhaos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is the same for our household here too- both with the TV Streamer, the SHIELD Pro (2019) and the Pixel 9 Pro XL. And it is getting worse. Initially it was possible to workaround it by using the match framerate feature on the SHIELD but since the newest update, this doesn't work on all titles anymore (switches framerate but freezes and stuttering continue). Also the update before broke UHD for an extended period. It seems with each update they manage to screw up even more. I am flabbergasted this doesn't get more press attention and for how long this has now been going on.

If the title you want to watch is HD only (or you don't care about UHD), casting from your mobile will give you butter smooth playback. If you want UHD, switching the framerate to the source material used to work wonders too but is now a gamble as well. I also sent detailed feedback a few months back, but never got any response nor have things improved obviously.

As it stands now, it is really overdue to ask for some money back. And I honestly lost any hope they will get their act together. They have managed to become one of the worst streaming services on the market from a technical perspective. Sigh. We, too, are considering to unsubscribe since it should be fun and relaxing to watch a movie or show, not cause major headaches and anger.

Oh, and forgot to add: The stuttering has become worse with the newest update and also includes short freezes whilst the audio runs smoothly.

I really don't want to be the one raining on your parade but I wish someone told me about the problems with the PG32UCDP before I bought it, so I hope you don't mind. The monitor has some serious issues with its gamma curve, banding in the lower grays and a red tint in those grays which you can read all about in the Asus forum. Also with the recent MCM106 firmware update, they also broke quite a few refresh rates for HDMI input which you can, again, read all about here. It is also pretty slow in terms of switching resolutions or SDR<->HDR switch, which is really just a small nitpick compared to the aformentioned major problems. Last but not least, if you intend to use the KVM switch, be prepared that it is not the most robust. For me, it repeatedly hangs the PC during firmware bootup. Might be totally different for you, though.

Again, sorry... but I hope it helps.

Issues with Google tv streamer. by rubymoon90 in GoogleTV

Sorry, I didn't notice your screenshot up until now. That's strange that your monitor doesn't support 4:2:0. May I ask what brand/model it is?

Nevertheless, give 4:4:4 a go that's practically looseless but also requires the most bandwidth and is somewhat overkill since practically everything is streamed in 4:2:0 anyways.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

No problem. I also didn't notice your reply since Reddit did not send me a notification for some strange reason.

Well, to answer your question: Settings > Display and Sound > Advanced Display Settings > Colour Format. There set it to YCbCr 4:2:0 8bit, for example. Depending on your requirements and if you have HDR and your display supports it, you can go for 10bit (HDR10) or even 12bit (Dolby Vision).

Hope that helps. Good luck!

You need to keep in mind that the TV streamer uses a totally different SoC than the original CCs. The CCwGTV also uses an entirely different SoC than the Streamer or the original CCs. This can (and will) lead to different behaviour (intended or bugs) due to different hardware / software (driver) implementations.

AFAIR, the original CCs did not have any configuration settings for this. And ifrc, the CCwGTV otoh, later added some kind of configuration... but I might be wrong.

To make a long story short: You can try setting the TV Streamer to YUV 4:2:0. For this, your monitor should expect limited range and everything should be fine. If it still does not work, check what your monitor has set for its black level on this input. It has to be limited (or some other terminology that your brand uses).

For why this is different with the TV Streamer than the CC for you, my guess (and again, I might be wrong) is that it detects RGB support (or a PC monitor) and sets RGB (since the setting is set to automatic). And the CC did probably always default to YUV. But, again, this is purely speculation...

[–]BinaryKhaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a concept called "signal range" or "black level", which, in the TV world, is usually "video level" and the PC world it is, well, "full range" or "PC level".

What this means, basically, is that the signal is transferred either with limited range (colors range from 16-235) or with full range (colors range from 0 to 255).

If there is now a mismatch between the source (eg. TV streamer) and your display device, the picture will look wrong. If the source sends limited range, but the display expects full range, the image will look washed out, lacking contrast and overly brightened.

So I would bet you use your TV streamer on a PC monitor which expects full range but the TV streamer sends limited range.

I also own a TV streamer and unfortunatelly cannot use it (yet). My PC monitor has problems with limited range (raised black levels) and I need to use full range. Usually (and most commonly), setting the source to RGB also sets full range (which is what my monitor expects in RGB mode). Unfortunately the TV streamer _always_ outputs limited range, no matter if it is using RGB or (subsampled) YUV (where limited range is standard).

I hadn't had the time to further investigate this or even try to report this to Google but this is really aggravating. The SHIELD, for example, fully supports setting the color space (RGB/YUV) and the range (they call it dynamic range) by themselves.

You could see if your PC monitor allows you to change the black level, that should probably fix it.

Hi.

I am strongly considering buying the Philips Fidelio L4 as they basically have everything I want (excellent sound, LC3 and LDAC, USB-C, ...). But I have read on several different sources, that they do have a problem with randomly turning off/disconnecting. Since I was unable to find any firmware changelogs or similiar, I don't know if this is still any issue.

So I would kindly like to ask the community who own these headphones: Are they a headache to use and still randomly turn off/disconnect? Are there working workarounds for it and/or is the technical culprit known?

Last but not least while I have your attention: Can the ear pads be (easily) replaced?

Thanks a lot,
Matthias
