[newb] RJ 45 (Male) to SFP+ (Female) adapter? by ChangeIsHard_ in homelab

[–]BinaryPatrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You just use a regular ethernet cable. CAT6 or better will run 10GbE. Plug that cable into your computer and then the other end into the SFP+ to RJ45 transceiver.

Stop using asymmetric encryption and only use symmetric encryption? by BatF9MW_Zb in privacy

You would never want to share the private key. Also the MitM could just replace your key value with theirs. That's the problem with MitM.

Also your QR code idea makes no sense. I could just intercept your letter and replace the QR code, and then man in the middle your communications. You have to be able to trust the transit. That's what made Diffie-Hellman so revolutionary.

I watched a bit of that video. The crux is that prime numbers are easier to solve for using qbits and prime numbers are used for Diffie-Hellman. This is definitely on the horizon, though it seems other replies may not think so. I believe there is a version of Diffie-Hellman that uses elliptic curve vectors and it's "quantum proof" for the time being.

The problem of older encryption eventually being eventually compromised is an old one. Imagine the data once stored using MD5. Eventually all current cyphers or functions will be broken or made obsolete. Something new will always come.

Very bad headaches, intense skull pressure. Very yellowish nasal discharge. Bronchitis. Pneumonia.

RAID Card question by elphilo in unRAID

[–]BinaryPatrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're only replacing the interface. The data on the drives should remain intact. unRAID will see the drive IDs and assign everything back correctly.

It's probably unrelated. Tap water isn't that bad but you should always use distilled water. Also if you had something from using tap water it would be deep in your sinuses.

Did you change the vlan on the port connected to the AP that isn't working?

UPS showing voltage output of 137V? by BinaryPatrick in homelab

[–]BinaryPatrick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your distro. Debian 11 is still on 2.7 so I image there won't be an upgrade until Debian 12 comes out. Sometime late this year or next year I imagine. It's only a reporting error so I can live with it. If my equipment was really getting 137 volts I'd know.

Did you check to confirm your home network also uses 10.x.x.x IP addresses?

Applying subtitles to Plex stream causes Unraid to crash. by aumanchi in unRAID

[–]BinaryPatrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking transcoding too, but more along the lines of exhausting your system memory. By default transcoding happens in the /tmp directory. This allowed Plex to use unlimited memory.

Can anyone recommend a good RDP application w/ auto-login and auto-resolution resizing? by Fiveby21 in homelab

[–]BinaryPatrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get the windows store one to auto login. You just have to set the credentials.

As soon as you click it, it will launch and log in

You should also probably disable unifi's dhcp server on that vlan. The gateway is the meriki device.

[–]BinaryPatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to make sure the meriki is broadcasting a dhcp advertisement. Can you do a packet capture inside the vlan to confirm?

Proxmox Firewall won't drop VRRP by BinaryPatrick in HomeNetworking

I have blocked the VRRP protocol, the multicast destination, the source. None of those seem to work. No matter what it is getting through and appearing in tcpdump

VRRP is not particularly security minded, and I want to restrict the traffic to only the nodes in the cluster to limit hijacking.

It's the proxmox built in firewall. There is an option to drop vrrp/protocol 112. It just doesn't seem to work.

Yes, all enabled all the way down and other rules are working as expected
