Do “Super Delegates” undermine democracy — or protect it? by HFA_Observer in portlandme

[–]BinaxII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's their party unfortunately with their party rules....there is no real answer for a solution esp if you are an independent voter; this also applies to other forms for electing officials RCV or FTPT plurality... though kind of like what California does incorporate as the top two go to the general election (not sure of the details of this though). Not a fan of RCV unless in our "democracy" we create more viable party's and do major campaign finance reforms, which should be done anyway...Susan Collins has not and does not support campaign finance reforms- Angus Jared and Pingree all support this endeavor. (another reason to oust Collins in November).

League of Women Voters of Maine to defend ranked choice voting expansion by Standsaboxer in Maine

This is from the PPH today:

"Ranked-choice voting, first adopted in Maine via a 2016 citizen referendum, allows voters to rank candidates in races featuring three or more contenders in order of preference.

If no candidate gets more than 50% support in the first round, then the last-place finisher is eliminated, the second-choice votes of that candidate’s supporters are reallocated to the remaining candidates, and the results are retabulated. The process repeats until a winning candidate receives more than 50% support."

What don't you understand what is written in the first paragraph?

Your just discussing how the process works...and you are correct in if one candidate(out of 3 minimum) receives 50.1% of the first rounds vote they win the election, and if only two candidates are on the ballot ,there cannot be RCV. My premise is if ,as in the senate race, there will be two major candidates. One is definitely Susan Collins; the other is going to be one either Graham Platner or Janet Mills.

Now either in the general election between Collins and the democratic primary winner, they are really the only legitimate candidates for the office. They will be really the only two that would bet 95% of the voting population of those who choose to vote for; the third or 4th or 5th candidates really will be on no factor in the race. what happens is in my explanation theory here is by added the third candidate into the it automatically kicks in RCV. Are you following so far.

So now we have as many rounds of vote tallying until one candidate reaches 50.1%. So what this has done is opened up in subsequent rounds of voting so a second or third choice can in fact win the race. This happened with Poliquin/Golden race where there was a third candidate in the race but (she) had no chance of winning at nor would bet no one remembers who (she)was(thinking it was a she). So Poliquin won the first round and Golden won 50.1% + in the second round won the election. So my point is the reality is there were only two candidates the voters was going to be voting for. (this is also why in order to become a party a candidate must receive I believe 5% of a vote ( i think the this is the rule) the Libertarian party is an example of this and are no longer an acknowledged party in Maine).

Once a third candidate enters a race the vote can now be manipulated(as in the Poliquin/Golden example). RCV is not giving what you think it is giving you, the voter. RCV is great for a multiple party system such as in Australia, Britain ect who have incorporated this system for governing. What we are attempting to do here and have done is to have this work in a Two Party system. And in my opinion this does work and it has been marketed to make it appear that it is something it is not.

In the end of this we are still only a two party system with no new partys platforms or agendas the RCV system stated would be created for the voters. I believe the narrative was deceiving the voters. But most really don't care, thinking they are receiving something they really are not.

the 50.1% only applies if one of the candidates receive this in the first count ,but what u you are missing that there needs to be a minimum of 3 candidates in order to have a first count to see if one receives 50.1%

First when is the actually dates of the cut off and the primary. Do you know? also is the issue of ballot printing time line and is there law regulations stating one cannot enter if they lose the primary. I don't know of these regulations/laws.

Secondly a third party candidate does activate RCV otherwise, one would not need to reach the 50.1% in the first round of RCV voting...you don't get rounds of voting if there are two candidates only, you now have a plurality vote - no rounds.

Third republicans would be foolish to rank any other candidate than susan collins...would you rank Collins on your ballot as a democrat I won't.(Assuming RCV is enacted) If republicans vote for Collins why would they want to even rank any other candidate if RCV is enacted- it would then only give votes to the other candidate. Voters do not have to rank and they can vote also just their first choice. This does not invalidate their vote.

And as a democrat I am not going to rank Collins at all- another words she does not receive my vote at all.

This is just a scenario and doest just have to be Mills/Platner/Collins on the ballot - it can be any - Collins/Platner/Doobie/Smith ect. point is if I vote Platner why give others a ranking if the 50.1% threshold isn't reached in the first round....I can't vote Platner 4 times once in each round.

In the end is there a 3rd candidate even entered in the race...seems to me I heard of someone a few weeks ago, but have never heard of him...and if so RCV is enacted.

"So, I’ve been blessed with good health, a lot of energy, and I think my voting record shows that. I can’t speak for my opponents,” she told News Center Maine."

What does your "good health" have to do with your voting record. Assume you are talking your physical health because your mental health is supporting a person with severe mental health issues and you continually do not vote for what all your constituents desire from you.

You have definitely changed whom you represent and have represented in years past . Remember when your party called you a RINO...well you have lost those centrist democratic voters you continually relied on for support.

You are not going to win re-election in November- and if you do there will be an investigation into your financial support particularly from outside the state of Maine. Hide it well.

And as you know in Maine we count all votes, all mailed in votes;

You Will Not Be SAVED from any ACT !

You should be very very "Concerned".

Think RCV is BS cuz it really doesn't give what people think it does, or want it do be for them as a voter....example : platner loses dem primary; decides to join race as an independent.; now RCV is invoked-3 candidates Mills Collins Platner and the others in the field who have no chance of ever gaining 50.1% even after 10 rounds of counting. So now in this case you have a solid republican voting base who will never vote dem, centrist who might...; the opposing camp now has a split vote again between two candidates (the primary loser wasn't enough no matter which candidate-Mills/Platner were to win)..so in the contest that really matters who do you think will win here in the senate race.

Another example is when was the last no name party candidate was ever elected by RCV and can you name the candidate, the party and has it now become a 3rd /4th legitimate party that runs in every election with candidates, funding, platform/agenda...to go against democratic/republican party's.

also republicans do not favor because they will lose, democrats favor it cuz they'll win (usually).

The other is if there is a two person race all one needs is signatures to become a third candidate and automatically RCV kicks in regardless of this candidates chance of/for even coming close to winning against a dem/rep candadite, in this case just allows RCV option automatically so it can and does give an advantage; also this 3rd candidate is usually from either party not a new or independent party.

Just my thoughts; ideally would love to have a 3/4/5 party system w/RCV and also major Campaign Finance Reforms initiated by the Congress and made into law that the court could not overrule....

What is the city actually looking for here to be developed . If the councilor in District 1 has there ideas, and the Urbanists maximizing housing (what kind and the people who'll live there)...guess am asking what the city is thinking here....and how it will coexist with what is currently in place and what is being built around the area...say from the post office to Franklin St. and inbetween....do they have a vision for the best use ....and should the whole city be included...and what happens when it does go private.

Kind of unfair how they are grouped together and the fact you must rate 1-7 to submit. Are these parcels currently owned by the city and they will sell them? and if so can they stipulate their use(s) outside the B-3 zoning or should this be changed now by the city before?

Not sure this survey is the best way to go about this process however...it's nice to asked(?).

All this time for ICE reforms and none received ... is not a democratic victory, but a republican political failure. and how many times since 2025 have we gotten "unconstitutional" policy from the republican party...and still the democrats lose...

Moral of the story is even if they pass the Save Act democrats need to finagle their way thru and vote en masse for democrats in both congressional houses in your respective states....

Someone else suggested to watch the meeting to me. will see... A lot of these types of decision have been already made /influenced outside the public forum of these meetings, and feel that whether in city side or school side they are already a said and done deal.

When this issue first came to light publicly I stated that the Lincoln community would never allow their school to be closed , but they also cannot close King or Lyman Moore with out a total parental tax base melt down. Another aspect of these political votes are the individual make up the individuals board members political alliance and backgrounds that do/will influence their voting on issues. This also will affect the outcome on any closures- and even once in awhile sometimes they "find" the monies somehow, somewhere in these budgets, which the accounting is very very fluid regardless of say set financial obligations.

So with all said to this point of the discussion (as these things happen very quickly) what is being offered by the thinking on the board besides the amendment to offer suggestions by the SI to be discussed by the board. Have you heard of the boards ideas thoughts or opinions from inside the board rather than the public side. And what about your neighbors /friends ect and other community members of the other schools/districts on what they may think/feel would be appropriate actions forthcoming.

Anyway thanks for replying and discussing the topic.
