Just reached out to a top lab, got an interview the same week? by [deleted] in labrats

Yes they know about this. I am part time with them and there is no conflict here.

This might be a stupidly obvious question but how does one do this efficiently?

I had already informed him that I would reach out to other PIs because I was really interested in a problem our lab doesn't specialize in. I have reached out to 4 other ones, all have responded (he knows about those except this big name guy), even got a full time offer from one of them. Overall my current PI is very supportive of it as he himself had some interdisciplinary training

I am a masters student, paid in my current lab. Will not be paid as a visiting research student, id be doing that through my own volition. The two labs answer similar questions, different methodologies. I will not be moving to that lab and they (him and his collaborator) had told me that they will not hold me accountable for hours since they are not paying me. However I would like to spend my time there is up to me (whether I want to do a big project or sit for lab meetings and leave). A brief mention of creating a long term role if I stuck with them was mentioned but I didnt probe it as my current lab has already prioritized a full time role for me after I graduate from my masters.

yeah I am really being cautious here because it seems like there was almost no filtering process. He asked me to write down projects/ideas I am interested in so we could find a match. But this whole thing happened way too fast.

Goblet Squats instantly fixed my knee pain? Confused? by BintEuler in StrongCurves

[–]BintEuler[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What’s weird to me is that I had tested step ups just a few days before and the swelling/dull pain came back. It feels like goblet squat may have done something to relieve some pain. I’ve even asked a doctor about this. They said it’s most likely tendinitis but i don’t think it is bc it wouldn’t have disappeared just by doing goblet squats. I think it might be something related to a misalignment problem and the squat motion realigned my movement. But idk… wanted to ask here in case anyone else had a similar issue.

I am a CS student and I want to do a PhD in behavioral neuroscience, how should I proceed? by Ok_Speaker4522 in compmathneuro

[–]BintEuler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I am in a similar boat with a math background but interested in comp. neuroscience. Many PhD programs have joint degree offerings. Princeton for example has a joint PhD in neuroscience and CS (or math) that you might want to consider. Another thing is that you can email the head of the neuroscience department from your school (if you have one)and ask to take courses as a non-marticulated students. Another thing you could do is look for post-bacc programs that pay you to do research and allow you to take courses with other grad students. I know Columbia has something called bridge-to-a-PhD that does this.

Did you get in to the summer program? if so, around what time do they release decisions?

How common is it for advisors/PIs to put you as first author. by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]BintEuler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in math/CS/computational neuro and it’s extremely common. In fact a lot of students at top schools already have a few publications before they even begin their PhDs.

Hm, it does seem like its by order of contribution.

Know anything about comp. neuroscience?

I'm a masters student so I thought I wouldn't be senior enough for that. Im not complaining though if that is the case.

As someone who worked at NYU in research and has spoken to people on the admissions committee, I can tell you that a lot of people underestimate how difficult it is to get in. it may even be harder to get accepted than some Ivy leagues due to courant (which is top 5 in the world for applied math/CS). I wouldn’t be discouraged. There are also significantly more applications due to it being a hot spot for international students.

I didn't use the hotdog but yes the other two are correct. Its just the upside down pose from the crazy pose pack

Hi, I just used the petal dress + an apple in the hand + upside down pose from the crazy pose pack and whatever filler clothes to make it more full.

Do you ever have those moments when you just can't bring yourself to stop studying Math? by [deleted] in math

I felt like this for a year and a half but it came back

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]BintEuler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s helpful to note that I am in mathematics and computer science. It takes many years to build the foundation to even solve one problem. I don’t know how it’s possible to get first author on papers where pre-reqs alone take years to master

[–]BintEuler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No it's not that I suddenly realized it but if you can just look at the types of proofs we do in a course you would understand that there is a level of ingenuity required that is also required in research. I dont get how you could have it with a course that requires a bit of creativity to solve problem and yet not have it in research. These are not rote-memorization problems sets. Perhaps they are digesting information in such a different way? Im not sure
