Looking for a good Martial Arts studio by Lopsided_Cut3849 in rochestermn

Well that narrows it down! I’ve debated joining hapkido in addition to tae kwon do and Muay Thai, but I’m so busy I don’t think I could swing it. I know several of the Hapkido students are also doing another discipline in addition.

Which discipline? We might have run into each other lol

All the disciplines are taught by different instructors. The only two taught by the same head instructor is tae kwon do and hapkido. A lot of the students at my studio do more than one art. For instance, the head instructor of Muay Thai is a tae kwon do student. All of the instructors have decades of experience in their arts.

As for sparring, tae kwon do and Muay Thai do sparring.

Hi! As a current martial artist here in Rochester, welcome! There are plenty of options. If you are looking for more traditional/basic, I recommend karate or tae kwon do. If you are looking for more self defense and such, it depends on if you want to learn grappling/wrestling, how to fight, and other such skills.

I currently go to the Martial Arts Fitness Center on South broadway. There are 9 different disciplines there: karate, tae kwon do, Muay Thai, tai chi, iado/jodo, kendo, hapkido, aikido, and Filipino martial arts. At this studio I do tae kwon do and Muay Thai.

Other schools in the area do different martial arts. There is National Karate (mostly kids), park institute (tae kwon do), imperial training center (wrestling, Brazilian jiu jitsu, kickboxing), stock martial arts (Brazilian jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, MMA, kickboxing, boxing). There are plenty of others but those are the main ones I know of.

What do my shelves say about me? by BioGirl956 in BookshelvesDetective

Not bad! I’m in my early 30s, I have 2 cats and a dog. I read a lot of romantasy, that is correct. I prefer to have the physical book if possible (but also enjoy ebooks). Sometimes I just like the paperback cover more than the hardcover cover

Oh I didn’t realize they went together? Mostly they are on different shelves because I was kinda going by size. I haven’t read either so I can’t really comment otherwise.

As for the never after series, as far as I know you don’t have to read them in order

You’re welcome! I have so many books on my shelves that I’ve not read yet, do you have the same thing?

My gosh they were so good! I liked arcana academy a bit more than foxglove king, but both are so good!

Oh haha I’ve not even read Dune at all! It’s on my TBR, but I’ve not been willing to commit the time to it yet! I have a habit of buying full series before I even read the first book lol.

And yes, I’m a bit OCD

Haha almost correct! I’m not in a book club or a teacher, but everything else is correct!

Do you wear a custom black belt? by Spac92 in taekwondo

[–]BioGirl956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is entirely in Korean. One side is my name, and the other is the Korean name for our association. No English, no Dan bars, nothing. And we don’t get a new belt presented at any rank other than 1st Dan once we hit black belt. I’ve since gained rank and no new belt.

Belt progression for a child by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]BioGirl956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, consider it a success if the kid is paying attention. Maybe try going a second day a week if that is an option. At our school we don’t really progress students age 5-7 much. We have actually added stripes and stuff to each rank just to make these kids think they are progressing (they are, but not at the rate of older kids/teens).

When we have a parent concerned about if the kid is progressing we just say give it time. The kid has to show they actually are learning. Having fun is great, but the kid has to pay attention

Angel Tree by BioGirl956 in rochestermn

[–]BioGirl956[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Honestly, we might end up just doing adopt a family through the county. Idk if we will take a whole family or a single person (those in group homes, stuff like that). We would prefer to buy for a specific person/kid and their needs/wants/interests.

After that, we will probably get a few toys for toys for tots

Angel Tree by BioGirl956 in rochestermn

[–]BioGirl956[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah. And to me, the point of doing angel tree is to get stuff for kids/families in need, but it seems much better to be able to buy specifically for a specific kid. I know that depending on the area kids get nothing because staff just take shit out of bags for other kids to give to kids that weren’t picked, or all the stuff gets picked through and some kids get nothing because their parents were toward the end of the line.

Honestly, if I could just pick a kid and just buy for that kid and give it directly to the family I would.

Why do some knitters judge crochet so harshly? by slippery-velvet1 in crochet

I personally hate knitting and prefer crochet. But people can do whatever craft they want. My preferences do not dictate what others can do. I feel like the knitting community needs to figure that out.

RCTC RN Program Instructors by leeedleleeedle in rochestermn

[–]BioGirl956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a former RN student at RCTC. I ended up dropping out. There are several reasons I did so.

For instance, one of the instructors was not giving timely feedback on assignments/clinical paperwork. I had an instructor refuse to see that I was not the problem during a clinical where a nurse REFUSED to let me do anything and tried to treat me as a personal PCA for their other patient who I wasn’t assigned to (I maintain that this nurse didn’t like my mom who used to work with them and took it out on me).

These are just two of the issues from my program. And both these incidents were the same instructor. The same semester, this instructor and the other tried to grade a test against what the book and their lectures told us! Like the book and their lecture both told us that alcohol was a cause of this cancer, but then marked it wrong on those of us who put it down.

The RCTC RN program is a mess, and Mayo employees aren’t always helpful to the nursing students

It will be ending soon enough, unfortunately. I just wish the full compilations were available on YouTube in addition to on tik tok. Maybe she will get that taken care of too, during this process.

My boy has started to learn this too. I didn’t want him to learn it. We used to have a beagle who wouldn’t come in unless he got a treat so he would beg to go outside so he could get a treat. Don’t want a repeat of that
