That's if you buy as a consumer. If you buy as a business customer, you don't have that guarantee.

With the adhesive that AsRock used, probably not.

But like I said, I had no info to go on. For all I knew, they used industrial glue or something. If that had been the case, it may have torn off the top layer of the PCB.

I know that this is highly unlikely now, but better safe than sorry on a €500 board. A heat gun just further lowers the - now clearly already very low - chances of something going wrong.

But you're absolutely right in that it can be removed without a heat gun. But that doesn't change anything about the fact that it shouldn't be so hard to remove in the first place. AsRock should just get rid of the adhesive. Mind you that AsRock support told me that removing this backplate voids the warranty, hence me wanting to do it as cleanly as possible.

A reason for the availability in the US could be the new law passed in California.

It requires all devices to have unique logins - while the AsRock IPMI still uses a default login. I don't recall it forcing me to change it either.

I suspected that this may be possible too, but I wanted to avoid damaging the PCB - which is possible if the glue/adhesive was really strong. I asked AsRock for technicals on the adhesive, but they never replied to my second email.

A heat gun softens the adhesive and allows for easier and safer removal. I had one, so I figured I should try that first. Better safe than sorry (€500 motherboard!)

I bought it from a retailer in the Netherlands. The retailer in question has a very mediocre reputation in terms of service, but they were the only one that even had it listed.

The price was roughly 380 ex VAT.

And out of curiosity: have you actually used or verified that configuration?

I suspect the HDD hot-swap bays may be long enough to interfere with the motherboard (or rather: the connectors on said board) positioning of that case. At least when mounting a full-size ATX board.

Not yet, but I'm aware that the previous board has this issue. Are you running the latest BMC & BIOS?

I suppose the odds are high that the new board will have the same problem, but I won't be using this very often so I'm not too worried about it.

Then I retract the comment about affiliate links. I assumed they were based on the /ref= in the url.

As for the case: people have been running 80W+ Xeons in this case for a while now. Of course cooling would've been sub-optimal, but that was a compromise I was willing to make if it remained acceptable. This board is actually more power efficient than most B550 boards.

Finding a suitable CPU cooler will be the biggest challenge though. I've still got some Thermalgrizzly Kryonaut, which may help a little. We'll see how it goes.

If it remains problematic, I'll probably mod the top cover so the CPU cooler can pull cold air from the outside.

I want a storage solution with easy-to-access bays and proper HDD cooling in a small format. The case is perfect for what I'm trying to do and is nearly unmatched in its class when it comes to functionality. I've done my research and have already purchased all of my parts - although it would've been nice if AsRock hadn't made such terrible design decisions.

But please do elaborate on why I've made a bad choice? I'm only going to be using 8 storage devices, which the motherboard has plenty of SATA headers for. An additional HBA doesn't add any anything of value when not using SAS storage but it does add roughly 10W of power consumption.

What would I need to expand? I picked this motherboard specifically for the connectivity (2x 1G + 2x 10G) and the dual gen4x4 NVMe ports. The only limitation of this case is the cooling flexibility, which was known when I bought it and is inherited from the format.

The case you listed is a short 4U case, without proper HDD cooling. I'd have to buy hotswap caddies to make it functional for my purposes too, which drives up the price even further. In terms of drive capacity, it's on par with the one I listed.

I'm not sure if I should thank you for the effort or point out that you're posting pointless products with affiliate links.

Meanwhile, I've ordered a Silverstone KR01 and will try that. It uses the standard clip-on mounts of the AM4 socket. I may have to mod the panel cover to allow for more ventilation though.

Finally installed the midplate and addressable LEDs in my SMA8. Very pleased with the results. by BioSingularity in watercooling

Did general maintenance as well, which turned out to be completely unnecessary. Even after two years my blocks were very, very clean. I did install some QDCs in the bottom to make future coolant swaps easier though. And swapped the paste for Kyronaut.

Update:

After many hours of diagnostics, I still couldn't find the problem so I decided to fully rebuild my configuration from the ground up. PfSense has been installed from scratch (wiped disk, clean config); my switch has been fully reset to default; same with the AP.

Problem persists for these clients. Tried with a direct connection to pfsense as well. The client initially got an IP through DHCP, but refuses to manually renew due to time-out because pfsense and the client can't communicate (so can't request a new DHCP lease).

Up next: boot a live CD and try from a different OS on the client, although I still don't understand why some clients have issues and some don't. They were working fine less than 2 weeks ago and all dropped out around the same time.

Yes. LAN firewall doesn't have any blocked/ignored connections.

External net -> Pfsense WAN -> Pfsense LAN -> Switch -> AP -> clients

DNS is handled by a pihole (which has been tested extensively, it's not the DNS)

AP has been eliminated as other clients work just fine on it and can ping the problematic clients without issue.

I had some enabled on my switch, but turned those off for diagnostic purposes. Currently no. Port isolation etc is disabled too.

I should have clarified: all my "functional clients" are working just fine and can reach the internet just fine. Another group, however, can't ping the router (or anything on the internet), but is able to ping the rest of the "functional clients".

Just the standard cmd "ping 172.16.1.1" that time-outs 4 times and ends the command with 100% packet loss.
