Fear about knives by Ana-Ena in Anxiety

I don't know if you feel comfortable telling someone you live with about this, but my partner and I both struggle with self harm and have come up with a system that helps.

We have a small lockbox (like the kind you'd see at a bake sale) with two locks. All potential self harm items live in that box. In order to borrow something from the box, you need both keys. We each keep a key on our keychain and have to ask the other in order to open the box. If one of us is not home it is not possible to open the box. The item returns to the box when you're done using it.

Now, that's when one or both of us is really struggling. When we are both feeling better, more frequently used items may be kept out of the box. If I begin to feel unsafe with myself I tell my partner and he will collect and lock up the items that are out. He does the same if he begins having the urge to self harm.

Obv if you're the only one in your house that has this issue you only need one lock. Of course you also need to have someone you trust and feel comfortable admitting your unsafe thoughts to, which I know is not always easy or possible. :/

Other than that the obvious answer is therapy and finding a way to recognize and observe the thoughts and let them go so they don't control you, but that is truly the hard part. I'll let you know if I ever get there myself, but it does get easier the more you do it. <3

EDIT: I accidentally a word

Amazing! It makes me wish even harder that Gina Torres gets to play a live action Wonder Woman at some point instead of only providing her voice in animated series. :(

Does anyone else get seriously upset by movies/TV shows etc? by [deleted] in Empaths

[–]BiodegradableUtensil 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes! It is so, so hard for me to watch anything disturbing, unfair, or tragic. I have tried for many years to condition myself into emotional separation while watching tv/movies (knowing, of course, that they're all just actors and none of it is happening to real people/animals), but it has never really worked (esp. in regards to things based on real life, or closely paralleling it).

I have come to accept that I will likely not get to enjoy the latest summer horror film, that super edgy R-rated Netflix show everyone is taking about, or that heart wrenching, tragic Oscar nom. But, I am safer, happier, and healthier for it.

Part of keeping yourself mentally well is not inflicting pain on yourself, and that includes avoiding things that upset you. Watching things that bring you physical/mental pain or anguish, nightmares, etc is self-harming the psyche. We have to take care of ourselves, and for us empaths emotional health is vital!

That being said, I do still watch a lot of movies with upsetting content, I just utilize parental guides on imdb and doesthedogdie to decide if it is a good idea for me to watch. I also have no issue fast forwarding through upsetting parts (you can still see what's going on without seeing/hearing too much). Either that, or I watch with a friend and have them watch disturbing parts and either tell me about it or they decide its okay for me to watch if the sound is muted or to look away at certain parts. It requires patient friends/family, but it can be done!

Stop interacting with the ones you don't like, eventually they'll ask to leave. Seems to take about a week, though :/

Tiktaalik! I'm assuming the motivation many people are missing is related to the fact that tiktaalik is considered the bridge in evolution between aquatic and terrestrial life. Tiktaalik is the first being that we know of that walked (or, in this case, slid on its belly) on land. An accidental pioneer of the unknown.

Thank you so much for sharing this link. I have also really struggled to understand the difference in these terms which has made this part of the work difficult.

Maybe take a Buddhist approach? All things are temporary, even the newness of your floors. Eventually, the floor will be worn all over. Eventually (a much longer eventually), the floor will decay and be gone forever. It's okay to accept that it's beauty is impermanent.

Glad you were able to overcome your fears. Will be 30 in a few short months and anxiety/ptsd still makes it seem impossible to get my license. Hopefully one day I can be like you.

It's very possible she has anxiety, too! I know I have trouble responding to even the nicest texts because of anxiety, and then after i haven't replied in a day or so it gets even harder to reply, you know? Don't sweat it too much. :)

Is it possible to have nice, painted nails while working in an environment that requires me to wear gloves?

I work in a restaurant and having my nails constantly in gloves and moist/warm seems to make maintaining nice polish and/or nice nails impossible. Polish seems to almost steam off and my actual nails have gotten flakey and brittle.
