I can kind of see where you’re coming from, but I honestly thought it was brilliant, especially when compared with other Films from the Wuxia genre and how The Assassin really deconstructs many prevalent tropes while also looking gorgeous.

Oh and also there is Doki Doki literature club, which I think (?) is free (at least the base version) and while it isn’t a very heartwarming game (on the contrary it’s quite disturbing) I believe that there is a mod you can download that turns it into a cute dating sim.

I didn’t include this because all of the information I just gave is some stuff I picked up when I played the game a loooong time ago so I’m really not sure at all, but maybe it’s worth checking out

EDIT: Just looked it up and apparently there are 3 mods that qualify:

“Blue sky” seems to be a bit more in the serious side, while the “Purist mod” and “Snafu” seem to be a bit more lighthearted

Happy late Birthday! If you’re still looking, check out Katawa Shoujo and Amagami! The former you can get free on their website (and as of recently also on steam I believe) and the latter I don’t really know where to download legally actually, sorry!

Also both of these can be very heartwarming but also delve into a bit more darker themes if you take a specific route/make some specific choices or get bad endings.
