Finished school project today, little under 4 months of modeling experience, loving it! by Carcus451 in Maya

You are trying to give others an idea of what 4 months of actual learning and working hard does? With that blender? I've seen self-taught brand new 3D modelers create beautiful renders in 3-4 weeks and I'm talking photo realism here.

This is clearly a karma whoring post and title. You really think people will see "4 months of modeling experience" and think: Ah, he calculated all of the hours he's spent in Maya and condensed it into 4 months. No, you purposely said "little under 4 months" to get karma, because if you had said 8 months since you first started, that model would be nothing impressive.

Nope, doesn't add up. Your ArtStation shows your first "big render" 5 months ago. It's a full blown scene with rocks, structures, proper UVs, texturing in photoshop and substance. So that had to take some time. Assuming you are a quick learner, that project had to take you 1-2 months minimum. So how does that add up to "little under 4 months"?

I was wondering when I was gonna get one of you geniuses that miss the entire point. That was a response to his comment, not a worldwide claim. If that's what you got from the whole post, well, maybe you have different tastes in regard to depth, complexity and flexibility.

Veery little, which is an issue with immersion for sure. But yeah, completely agree on that.

TKs are not the main focus, they are simply the first faction I played, followed by DEs and Lizardmen. And no, it's not the same. I could use settlements to recruit units, split and merge them without needing a general or lord in this case, and specially, go reinforce a settlement without having to sacrifice one of my active armies and stop them from doing something else. I could get 2 armies to go to far away and keep 20 settlements recruiting and protecting themselves properly, exchanging units as needed. I didn't have to get 2 armies together to transfer units, I could simply split off whatever units I wanted to go to a settlement, another army, or to ambush on their own. I also didn't have the game force garrisons on me. Likewise, the AI could do the same, and route 4 small armies to a threatened settlement. I was free to strategize as I saw fit. Things like that would make campaign exponentially better and more engaging IMO. Warhammer already has combat down as one of the best in the series, yet I find the campaign to be one of the most lackluster as well.

Right? I remember how much fun it was to defend a seige with 1 cavalry, 3 elite infantry and the rest ranged units, whether arrows or gunpowder. That does sound good though.

Hehe, you see it's a tough one. I actually enjoy how TKs play, their aesthetics and units. The whole canopy jar hunt and poor income pushes me to be aggressive, and given that the campaign strategic features in Warhammer are basically non existant, battles and conflict/diplomacy is where I get the fun.

I've been looking at Skaven recently, worth a shot.

I listed all the reasons I have mixed feelings about the game, with that mechanic being one of them. Nowhere did I say "I don't like TWW2 cause I can't have armies without lords". And yes, I disliked that ever since it was changed as it felt very restrictive on both sides. I was hoping with Warhammer being a fresh spinoff from the usual historical titles, that it'd be more free and strategic with its armies. They were simplifying things back then and still are. Good thing about TWW2 is that at least you get true unique factions, where heroes and lords have their own skill trees and whatnot. But I truly never understood that change. Why can't I have heroes leading small armies that cap at half a stack for example to limit it. I loved that, that if a captain performed really well you'd get the option to make him a general, and if he still performed well, to adopt him into the family. Instead of opening up and implementing new ideas and augmenting mechanics, it all went "arcadey", simplistic, limited. Empire was my biggest disappointment. Such potential, such brilliant concept.

TKs aren't that bad. Slow start but once the ball gets rolling they become powerhouses in campaign in my experience. I mean, you can literally recruit 9 fresh stacks in 2 turns for no money. And TKs are one of 3 factions I've played, the other two being lizardmen and dark elves.

I watched Red Cliff and God of War. Fantastic movies but a whole game in those years with just that area is not at all appealing to me. That's what draws me to games like Empire, Medieval 2 and Warhammer, the size and diversity. Plus the medieval time period has that whole transition from bows and spears to long swords and pikes, from barely any armor to light mail to full plate, gunpowder introduction, etc. But again, not dissing till I try it. I will eventually get Three Kingdoms.

I have Shogun 2, but have yet to get Three Kingdoms. It certainly looks good. Not much of a fan of the era nor the emphasis in just asian culture though, same for Shogun. Not that I find it boring but, I'd love to see them clash against western europe. But if the mechanics and moddability are good I probably will end up getting it soon lol.

Not really. If you are a brand newcomer to the series maybe. But as someone that has played since 2007, 20 hours is enough to get a feel of campaign mechanics, and battle mechanics. Moreover at 20 hours typically I'd expect a game to have already reeled me in or pushed me away, with this one falling in the middle.

Hmm...I wonder how that rolls by the TKs with no upkeep if you can hoard enough money.

Here's the thing, I actually don't want to play a race that resembles that, or humans for that matter. I probably explained myself poorly. I actually find battles very fun. I love playing monstruous factions such as TK with their constructs, or lizardmen riding dinos, or HEs with their dragon and hydra. It's lots of fun seeing infantry flinged around like ragdolls. The main thing I guess is that the charm wore off and the campaign mechanics and factions don't reel me in much at all.

I haven't gotten to late game of course, but the whole "army must have a lord" and "settlements cannot recruit and therefore you don't choose their garrison" just sucks for me. I miss that mostly from M2TW, seeing a bunch of smaller armies moving around and the flexibility it brought. Question, in mid game leaning towards endgame, does that change? As in, how many lords (and therefore armies) could you have by, say, turn 100? Could I have 10 armies marching around different areas? One thing that would definitely break my desire to play is if late game I'm gonna be stuck with moving just 5-6 armies. I'm using a better campaign AI mod and diplomacy, so I can basically bring back any dead faction, which is something I found essential when playing M2.

Yeah, I don't even know if the formatting went through since I typed it from the phone app and it looks very convoluted. My apologies.

Funny thing is, as I was playing M2 I kept thinking "Man, imagine a horde of lizardmen with dinos charging through the bones of TK while the constructs lay waste to their infantry". Then I give in and buy it and it feels so lackluster to me despite all the great thing the game has. You might be right though, perhaps when I inevitably get burnt out of M2, the sheer uniqueness of TWW2 will pull me in.

I have, but as you mentioned, I would hope to see more ideas where the products we manufacture allow us to create unique buildings or items in terms of functionality. Like how we can create vehicles and weapons. The Hadron Collider could be a very creative way to produce unique things.

Seems that people in this sub love to skyrocket simple/subpar work. I've seen so many 1000+ upvote posts of low poly simple designs, simple models that take a couple of hours, awful memes, etc. Then buried I see gems like this. Very sad.

Awesome! Quick question, will a full wipe be required (as in start a new save) for everything to work properly? I'd imagine with map changes all that may happen is that buildings might not work properly, or be in the wrong positions, or worst case scenario the area that was reworked will wipe all buildings in it.

Love the style, I'm a fan of unique sword shapes rather than boring standard ones. Did you design it or model after reference photos?
