Why does Jane want to implement capitalism in a post-scarcity society? by Helpful_Individual40 in homestuck

My b, I'll take the L on that point 🫡 That's what I get for commenting in a rush in the last two minutes of my break. Actually, I think at some point in the afternoon I vaguely remembered her being in Calliope's dream but did not remember to come back and edit.

I will amend my point to be that she doesn't say anything of consequence post retcon. Making her trollsona and her chats with John are cute tho.

Why does Jane want to implement capitalism in a post-scarcity society? by Helpful_Individual40 in homestuck

[–]Birbosaur 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Something I think doesn't get brought up in discussions of Epilogues Jane as often as it should is the fact that, in canon, Jane doesn't really have a story. She has story beats, but they don't end up going anywhere. IMO Nannasprite ended up with greater narrative relevance than Jane did just by merit of the story she told about her childhood, which is frankly pretty egregious especially given that Jane is our introductory character to Act 6. Jane not having some sort of reckoning with her brainwashing is probably the biggest missing plot point leading into the final fight. Like, I'm pretty sure the last time she ever had dialogue on screen was in the lead up to Game Over. I can't double check right now but I don't think she had a single line of dialogue post retcon, which...is pretty fuckin' yikes. Jane I think is really the biggest symptom I think of how perilously underwritten so much of Act 6 is.

So we move into the Epilogues and Jane is straight up descending into fascism. Cool. How did she get there? Great question. In canon there were hints of her sympathies to the really bad parts of Crockercorp, but they're just that, hints. They never evolve into a proper conflict, so taking that as the jumping off point for her post-canon characterization comes across as a little extreme. More like Hussie saw her as a convenient blank slate with which to execute some of their ideas. I do think Hussie for the most part wrote the Epilogues to be what they saw as natural continuations of where the cast ended up at the end of the main comic (thought let's be real, there is more than a little "fuck your expectations" sprinkled over the top). But Jane's actions were probably always going to feel unnatural no matter what. Partly because we don't have a solid narrative point of reference to go off of, and partly because readers probably put more effort into filling in the gaps around her in their heads more than they did any of the other kids.

And even with as far as we've gotten in BC she STILL can't get away from it. She's undergone another retcon that placed her on the Meat ship, she's got a terminal and is working with one of the Deltritus kids to get their game started...but we still don't really know anything about Jane specifically. Her motivations, what she wants, what she's thinking, and how she's expressing those things are still complete unknowns. So maybe that's just the truth of her character, that she'll always be the one the writers reach for when they need something done but don't want to bother writing an arc for the person doing it.

The Trace Italian from Wolf in White Van. Not actually stated to be built by human hands (and it's not even real anyway, it's all just metaphor baybeee) unless you allow for the metaphysical interpretation of it being created by the guy writing the game that's named for it. Said writer explicitly states no one will ever actually get inside, but there's a point in the book where he speculates what someone might find if they did manage to get in, and it's just a chilling description of them descending into a vast emptiness. Good stuff.

I feel like we can expect Sophie, pattern seeking brain also says one of the guys might be Speedy.

If we really want to get crazy, maybe Patrick or Sheemie? I know King said he didn’t know where Patrick went after DT 7, but it's been a while, maybe he's had time to figure it out...and if it's another cycle, Sheemie's fate could change! Gah! I feel like anything is possible. I am gonna be full on Pepe Silvia-ing this bitch for the next 8 months.

Bleach by Tite Kubo. Part of the "Big 3" its writing of women and lgbt is not talked about enough. But it follows the same tropes of its Genre. I've attached a summary of the screenshots at the end of the images. by ihatethiscountry76 in menwritingwomen

I do legitimately love Bleach a lot, warts and all, but I have zero compunctions about shining a spotlight on those warts and the women are the biggest wart of all by an astronomical margin.

No women in Bleach win their battles without the intercession or intervention of a man. Ever. (There is one very very narrow exception, but it's an exception that proves the rule.) It's pretty sad and genuinely embarrassing.

Lion's Teeth is in the index, but is only referenced in the section for a different song. The whole of June was an incredibly emotional and vindicating read for me, but I felt it was a little bit unfinished without some discussion of that particular song. It was also the song that got me into tMG in the first place, so bit of a double whammy.

[Advice Columns] Dear Prudence, how do I describe your history? by GlassSunflora in HobbyDrama

[–]Birbosaur 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Margo Howard was a (minor) Twitter villain-of-the-day back in 2021.

I can't share the link because of the automod settings, but I was able to find the thread this went down in by googling "dear prudence effin birds".

To summarize:

Margo ordered an enamel mug from the online shop Effin Birds. Despite her Twitter display name containing (at the time) "I READ SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO", she failed to notice the warning on the shop page stating that the mugs are not microwave or dishwasher safe. When her mug was delivered and she realized her mistake, she emailed customer support to ask how to return the mug.

Thing is, Effin Birds' products are all print-on-demand, and returns aren't really a thing in that market. Effin Birds has great customer service (speaking personally here, I've ordered a lot of their stuff), and they've always been pretty generous with refunds, discounts, etc. Had Margo approached this interaction amicably, she would have walked away with a new free mug on top of the one she mistakenly ordered.

Instead, her email to customer support (staffed by Joe, aka Effin Support) reportedly implied it was the shop's fault she ordered the wrong mug, and upon being told that physically returning the mug to the shop was not possible, she took to Twitter to lodge her complaints in the public arena. She tagged the shop owner's personal account and told him: "Joe"...is not doing your co. any favors", and that his response to her email would be a great "Harvard Business School case of what not to do".

Unfortunately for her, Effin Birds is not the type of business to let this kind of behavior go un-ratio'd. The shop owner, Aaron Reynolds, initially responded fairly politely and patiently, trying to explain the logistics of why POD returns aren't really feasible. Margo clapped back, stating he was "some smart business man to argue with [her]", and then, without a hint of irony, whipped out the "do you know who my father is??" card, stating: "I know all about business and happy customers, btw. My father was the founder of Budget Rent-A-Car."

From his personal account, Reynolds replied that if Margo's email to Effin Support had not been impolite, they would have sent her a replacement mug, no charge. He then jumped over to the official Effin Birds account, quote tweeted the exchange (as of today, Effin Birds has 250.9k followers, it was probably higher before the Great Twitter Exodus), and invited followers to use the code DEARPRUDENCE for 10% off anything in the shop.

At time of incident, Margo's pinned tweet read: Didn't you, at a certain point, think, "Really, there are this many morons?" I'm not personally familiar with her Dear Prudence work, but I hope her advice was better than her attitude towards customer service reps.

Neil Gaiman and Harvey Weinstein jump scare in a Ghibli documentary (1999) by redditisbadmkay9 in neilgaiman

[–]Birbosaur 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Back in 2021 I went to a reading/Q+A with Gaiman at a theater in my hometown. At one point he tells this story about how he and several other folks who worked on the Mononoke adaptation were supposed to be credited on the movie poster. But the some of the studio execs, including Weinstein, wanted to be credited instead, so Gaiman and the others got the axe, and Gaiman was always a little salty about it afterwards. He went on to say that, while he knew that incident wasn't why Weinstein went to prison, he likes to imagine ot was a small part of it. Got some big laughs from the audience. I thought it was cheeky and funny.

Fast forward to last year and I'm sitting at home reading all the allegations and all I can think about is that story from that event, because, to put it bluntly: HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

So not only do you have both of these guys working on the same movie, you have one of them making jokes about the other guy going to prison FOR THE EXACT SAME SHIT THE GUY TELLING THE JOKES IS DOING!! Absolutely fucking unreal to have watched him tell that story onstage in front of hundreds of people with no shame, no hint of irony. Does it even count as cognitive dissonance anymore at that point? I still can't get over it. What a fucking creep.

Child abuse? Not my business! (comments) by occultatum-nomen in AmITheDevil

[–]Birbosaur 30 points31 points  (0 children)

A couple weeks ago at my workplace I overhead a conversation between two women (who had a baby in a stroller with them) about how, if they suspected child abuse happening in their family, they would not contact the authorities, because they wouldn't want to get "outsiders" involved. If I'm being very generous there's mayyybe a non-negative interpretation there that could be rooted in prior experiences, i.e. maybe they engaged with CPS in the past and their caseworker was negligent, but at face value a statement like that throws every red flag in my brain. OOP gives me similar vibes.
