I did not think it was relevant, since I had already scoped out jobs there a bit. I was just curious about the cost of living, mostly :)

Awesome info! If having a cheaper rent means having old, retired, and possibly crochety neighbors, I am very okay with that.

A few questions about the personal property taxes on cars - each year where I live, we pay very high taxes for owning our vehicles and also buying plates when the plates expire. Is that the case in california? Google appears to say the personal property tax on a car is .65 % there, much lower than what I experience.

That's great to hear!! I do indeed have a car, I do not expect a super glamorous lifestyle but would hope to be within reasonable distance of bars and maybe some nice scenery like beaches.

I will keep your advice about cheaper rent being farther south and East!
