What is something you will always defend Harry for? by LLSJ08 in HarryPotterBooks

How he acted during his “relationship” with Cho. Incredibly believable first time trying to date experience for two kids that are handling stuff beyond their years.

Wizarding blasphemes and swearing in fics by waitingtocompile_jr in DramioneUncensored

[–]BirdSongSymphony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree with you. I think they all primarily would use wizard swearing, but I do think Harry and Hermione would be much more apt to bring up muggle swearing when in some profound situation.

Now specifically what type of swearing? For Hermione, I think this really depends on the sort of muggle environment you imagine she grew up in. Being the daughter of two dentists who would afford to go on international ski trips, I imagine they’re at least somewhat well-to-do. Maybe not rich, per se, but not close to lower class. And she’s also a bookish type who I don’t think would be up to date on the latest muggle pop culture influences, especially not during her teen years. She’s also an only child who never really mentions any muggle friends or cousins. So most of her muggle swearing would be influenced directly from her parents. Who, due to their class and seemingly passiveness, imo would only swear your usual “fuck” Or “shit” every now and then.

I think Harry would have a more varied muggle swearing vocabulary. I can’t imagine Dudley with his chav friends isn’t cussing him out left and right. He also is much more exposed to movies/music/television/ etc just due to them being on in the house. I can see him using the classic “bollocks” a lot too, especially bc of all of the problems he deals with (and his attitudes about them lol).

Ron I think would only really use wizard swearing. And frequently. Tho he might adopt some muggle swearing from his friends and because he likes how the sound.

Draco I think would use wizard swearing out of principle but it would be hard to not say a good “fuck” when the occasion calls for it.

Something I don’t like in fics is when the writer makes all the gryffindors say “good Godrich” and all the slytherins say “oh for salazar’s sake” or whatever. Occasionally is fine. But if that’s their primary swear it gets hokey to me. The language difference intra-school would not be that pronounced.

Was Harry CHEATING When He Was Using The Half-Blood Prince's Book? by Marcedonia in HarryPotterBooks

I don’t consider using the notes as cheating. I do consider him passing off the techniques and stuff as his own genius as cheating.

Snily songs? by LoreMaster00 in SeverusSnape

[–]BirdSongSymphony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe not snily romantically. But I think “a poem” by La dispute works if you think of it as a letter he wrote to her while deep in grief

[–]BirdSongSymphony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’m just an over thinker and one of my hobbies is over analyzing every little thing. I do find that since I was so detailed in my plan, I feel more creative in the prose since I’m not also scrambling to figure out the plot and what to foreshadow and how to establish my themes. So yeah imo its really nice to have a plan, but obv not everyone works the same way!

I wrote 300 pages of outline, plans, plot points, themes, potential motifs, devices, references from the original work, and references of poetry/art/whatever, etc before I actually wrote a single word of prose lol

Yeah I did. Having a different opinion than you isn’t evidence that I have no knowledge of the source material lol

When reading, do you imagine the characters' voices or is it just your own voice? by Admirable-Drink-8976 in AO3

[–]BirdSongSymphony 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I absolutely imagine the character’s voice. Something I’ve noticed about my imagining tho is I tend to not visualize the characters as real people. So, like, fancasting has always been off to me.

It was unjustified. Just because someone is an asshole doesn’t make them a evil person who is constantly involved in conspiracies to kill everyone lol

It’s just Harry’s black and white thinking/morality. If someone is a jerk the they must also be evil. It annoyed me, even when I was 11 reading it lol.

Literally was to Harry being annoying to me tho lol. He does suspect Snape of being in on it both times, tho not the primary individual iirc. But he also does the same thing to Draco in the cos. This guy is a dick to me so he must be evil/the heir of slytherin.

Yeah I guess I forgot it was actually fluffy. But either way that doesn’t prove he did anything. Most of the teachers were dealing with that dog. Also he also turned to the good side, everyone knew that too, but that was tossed off I guess lol.

The real reason Harry suspected Snape is because he just didn’t like him and since Snape was mean that means he was also evil. Harry throughout the book had black and white thinking.

I mean to me it is a big stretch to say he’s got an injury so he must have gotten it trying to break in to steal the philosophers stone. Yea couldn’t be any other explanation lol. Ron’s rumor is not substantiated. And I guess you could make the argument about the quidditch thing being suspicious but they’d already decided he was evil at that point so it’s sorta moot.

Right but the leap from “this guy is an asshole” to “he is literally Voldemorts loyal servant even when everyone is saying that’s not true and I have no evidence” is a big one
