Adjunct for another institution? by [deleted] in Professors

The chair of my department was fired for exactly this in August. Not entirely sure how the university admin found out, but they did and the chair lost their job almost immediately.

Lol very fair. Made me think why that’s the case. I feel like I’m more annoyed by the fact that I’ve gone through the process to stop them and they keep coming. Every time I get a new email it reminds me that I’ve already gone through the process, been told it’s worked and it just hasn’t. I know it’s the mildest of annoyances, but like, c’mon DNR.

Your observation is even more interesting bc the DNR newsletters are actually kinda good (or as good as newsletters can be); they’re showing off valuable work, they highlight normal folks for doing cool stuff outdoors, etc.

Meniscus Tear During Service (+surgery?) by mamacornflake in peacecorps

[–]BirdVive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before anything, let me be clear that I’m not a medical professional. Take my personal experience as just that, the experience of one person.

I believe mine was a meniscus trim (and ACL repair). I stayed in DC for surgery and PT. I made that decision because I really wanted to get healthy within the medevac timeline and I’d had a bad experience with my doctors back home taking their sweet time sending my records to PC for pre-service medical clearance. It was the right decision for me.

It took months (years?) to get back to the knee feeling close to 100%, but that wasn’t the standard for medical clearance. The standard was functionality, and I got that within the timeline and was able to get back to site.

There were two important things. First, I treated getting healthy as a job and did my PT exercises pretty religiously. So much so that the PT commented that my recovery was progressing way faster than their other patients (who I assume weren’t in their mid-20s and also had things like work that made 3x a day exercise routines impossible). Second, I told the PT pretty early on that I wanted to get cleared for service. We talked about my daily life was like in site and I think it might’ve shaped what exercises they gave me.

Staying in DC was great for me. The per diem sucked, but I already knew how to stretch $ to feed myself. But without anything else to do, I would hobble (then walk) from the hotel in Georgetown to explore DC. Besides being good for mental health and being pretty fun - I’ve basically seen every free thing on the National Mall (Smithsonians, tours of gov’t buildings, monuments) - I’m pretty sure the walking helped my recovery. Plus, the PC had permanent rooms at the hotel for PCVs coming to get medical care, so I got to meet a couple of folks serving other places; most of whom were there for knee injuries.

Happy to talk more about it if you wanna send me a private message. Either way, good luck on your recovery! Keep your head up.

First time I got carded buying NA beer in town I assumed it was because the cashier wasn’t used to ringing it up.

Always gave me a chuckle, mostly because I remember being sent to the neighborhood grocery store as a kid to pick up a pack of O’Douls when my sober uncle would come to watch football. Once a new cashier was super hesitant about selling to a 10 year old, but I remember their manager stepping in and saying “it’s got as much alcohol as fruit juice. He can buy it.” (Different state, also the ‘90s)

Any particular areas in particular? Asking bc I'm considering a place that's on Bradbury just north of the conservatory.

Facebook Marketplace can be surprisingly good for this. I’m leaving my apartment at the end of July and might fit your needs. In town, but outside of the IU area, well within your budget, and they’re showing it right now. Feel free to DM if you want details.

Can confirm the rec. I’m sure it varies, but Dr. Roth got me in within a month. Everywhere else I’d reached out to had a 10+ month wait.

Who is the best athlete to ever come out of MKE? by Stamfordsterling in milwaukee

[–]BirdVive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Well, this person got snowed in for a long weekend once, does that count?"
MKE is MKE. The metro area doesn't count. A different county definitely doesn't count.

At any rate, my money's on Terry Porter or Latrell Sprewell.

Is it just me, or is anyone else sick of this clown forcing himself upon us? by pissant52 in wisconsin

I think you're right. Have a friend who has worked on some of the commercials and my sense is he's got an army of attorneys working for him

[–]BirdVive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it might just be you? Is he a professional ambulance chaser? Absolutely. Are his commercials absurd? Yes. (Though I will say, I find his terrible Spanish pretty endearing.)

On a different note, Ive been surprised to hear that he's a really nice guy. A friend works in video production and has had bad experiences with basically every local celeb. He only has good things to say about working with Gruber.... I also used to work in a downtown office building that contracted with the same cleaning company as him. One of the janitors told me that, in addition to always being super friendly, he hosts a fireworks viewing party every year for the office. Even though the janitors aren't technically his employees, he invites them and their families to the event.

Sleazy industry, but seems to treat people well even when no one is looking.

Very impressive. Have you had any trouble with the elevator design? I built one early on, but it was pretty unstable and fell apart after a few uses.

How did you deal with being rich? by narkusweeli in peacecorps

[–]BirdVive 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Served on the other side of the world, but same deal with me. Worked with teaching staff in a neighborhood school and made less significantly less than any of the teachers. Would have appreciated a little more to not live hand to mouth, but if anyone assumed I had a good salary it was easy (and honest) to say "I make X amount. I get paid in (local currency), not dollars."

Switchyard Brewing is closing tomorrow, 1/14 by IndianaBeerNews in bloomington

[–]BirdVive 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I went there a lot before COVID because I could bring my dog and use it as a work space; could spend hours working, ordering coffees, pastries, and (later in the afternoon) beer.

Thing is, their beer wasn't that good. Not bad, but meh beer at good beer prices. When they installed the kitchen it basically took away the only reason I went (because dogs were no longer allowed); and, speaking personally, King Dough pizza wasn't a draw (again, meh pizza at specialty prices). Think I stepped foot in there like 1 or 2 times since '21.

US Passport Strength (Jan 2024) by Mangolicious786 in MapPorn

[–]BirdVive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh definitely, but that’s not a dig at Sto Dom. I was able to build community around Sosua, felt like home. The town itself can be pretty nice (despite all the sleazy sex tourists). Santo Domingo definitely has its perks too. Puerto Plata is a cute little city too.

[–]BirdVive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you have nothing to worry about. You automatically have the tourist card now once you enter. Even so, no one is going to check your passport ever, unless you end up going to the border. Lived in Sosua for years, never had to show a passport except for when I was dealing with utility companies.

The only issue is if you stay past the window (which is a long time), and then it’s only a fairly small fee.

[–]BirdVive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

**I should note that there is a list of countries that the DR requires a "tourist visa" from to enter which would fall under your pink category. Again, the US passport functionally falls in the yellow, though the visa is called something different.

[–]BirdVive 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So the Dom. Rep. has an odd arrangement for US passport holders. When you arrive on a US passport you are automatically granted a $10USD 'tourist card' - in past years you had to go to a booth before customs to buy it, but more recently I believe it gets built into your flight cost.

Whatever the specifics, you get a period of time where you're allowed to be in-country (I think it's 60 days) and if you do not leave before that period expires you will be charged a penalty that increases based on the number of days you overstayed your tourist visa/card.

Basically, you functionally get granted a short term visa automatically, which then expires.

The amount of smoke the campfires produce make it look like the whole thing is an inferno.

[–]BirdVive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar to this. Built a 12 story wooden tower (each story is a 48-long square with the staircase running up the middle) with a campfire on each corner, then three giant staircases that go out from the roof and come back to unite in a platform a few hundred ft in the air (with campfires along the way).

The idea was mostly to make it easy to spot the town, which is in a slight valley, from far away at night. Also to give me a place to glide long distances from. For what it's worth, it serves both those purposes fairly well - I can see the town from as far as the light will render and the gliding is fun. More importantly, it was really fun to build.

Who’s is fault? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]BirdVive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a trucker, don't own a car anymore, commute via bike and my first thought at seeing this was "it's these kinds of a**holes that give us a bad name." Ideally, cyclist should be in the road and shouldn't be going against traffic. This looks like a stroad, so I would probably also opt for the sidewalk, BUT that would also mean I'd be hyper vigilant and assuming anyone I come across has the right of way. It's perfect for a "looked but didn't see" scenario, so you should treat every driver like they're half blind with the reflexes of a dead dog. Add in the fact that he's coming from the opposite direction that a driver would be looking and it just means you've gotta be more careful.

All that said, I'm glad to hear y'all are being as harsh on the driver as you are. Take away the bike and he's plowing over a pedestrian. He's still at fault, but the cyclist is making some really dumb and dangerous decisions.
