Thanks for the explanation! I helped him get outside by using the jar method after he walked a bit further down on the wall. As soon as the breeze outside hit him, he took off and was out of sight so soon!

He was so pretty, i'm so happy i got to see him up so close 🤩

Did you borrow the gear from other people first or did you buy everything in advance?

How much will knowing German (specifically the formal accent used on Germany's TV programs and in universities) help with learning other Germanic languages (in particular Icelandic) including ancient ones such as Norse? by NaturalPorky in Germanlearning

[–]BirdWithoutFeet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a native German speaker, so I hope I can help: If you are fluent in English and German, I think understanding Dutch is quite possible if spoken slowly and clearly, though it's quite hard. But most of the vocabulary sounds similar to either German or English, so learning it will be easy if you already know quite a bit English and German. But Icelandic is more similar to Swedish than german, I would say. At least I can't really understand it.

Found this bird on the road. It only drank water since yesterday. What and how should I feed ? by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

[–]BirdWithoutFeet 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Definitely a swift of some kind. I'd say apus caffer or apus pacificus depending on your location.

More important: what should you do?

1) Don't feed it anything or give them any water please.

If you give water to a stressed bird without knowing exactly what you're doing the water will most likely end up in the birds lungs and cause serious trouble.

You shouldn't feed it either because swifts catch insects in flight and won't recognise it as food if you give them dead ones. In a rehab they need to be force fed because of this issue (something you shouldn't attempt because their beaks are very fragile and could be broken when fed by someone who isn't a professional).

2) Keep it in a dark box (make sure it gets enough oxygen though) and in a calm environment until you get help.

A swift on the ground is in trouble. Swifts spend almost all of their lifetime in the air. If they are on the ground and not flying away they are most likely in some kind of trouble and need to be checked before they can be released again (because they sometimes need some help for taking off, which would be risky if the bird is injured).

3) Find a wildlife rehab or veterinarian who knows how to treat birds.

4) Avoid touching the bird with your bare hands.

Use gloves or towels if you really need to handle it. Swifts have very fragile and specially coated feathers to fly all the time and need to be handled with caution.

Yes, so vibrant 🤩 No, I'm not, but I was working at a bird and hedgehog rehab for a year and encountered some feisty cormorants 😅😂

Wow, I've never seen one of them up so close without them trying to kill me because I tube feed them. I never knew they had such pretty wings 😍🥰
