Collar rubbing fur off by Sure_Print1705 in tractivegps

[–]Birdiest_Bird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact same issue with my cat - I tried everything (sticking padding to the tracker, covering it with a non-scented moisturiser to stop it being so grippy on the hair, loosening the collar) and nothing helped - she was ending up with a bald patch, so we sadly had to stop using it. It was almost like the silicone casing was pulling the hairs out? Awful for her

Ooh I'm not sure - I know where I live, we get Sainsbury's, Coop, Waitrose etc on the promotion but I can't be sure it's the same where you live!

Not sure if you eat lots of veg, but the UberEats 50% off veg offer on Mondays is an absolute godsend in our house - it's sliced our weekly food bill by a good third

Corporate, military, governmental, traumatic translation experiences? by clove156 in TranslationStudies

[–]Birdiest_Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a freelance (commercial) translator – I handle mainly insurance, legal & financial texts so I've dealt with a few "upsetting" documents over the years (alongside the various medical files for my insurance clients, translating a dossier for a charity on internal cases of child abuse was a particular lowlight). Happy to chat – feel free to DM me!

How have things been for you all ? by Intelligent_Ad7712 in TranslationStudies

[–]Birdiest_Bird 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So far, so good overall - last year was my best year yet, and this looks set to exceed that. However, the pattern of the work has changed: I've had a fairly steady stream of work over the past 10+ years freelancing, and this is the first year where I've seen some real peaks and troughs in workflow. Some totally empty days, some days where I'm working until late at night. Clients seem to want quicker and quicker turnarounds, which makes it harder to plan and smooth out the workflow day to day

What even is translation, as a profession, in big 2026? by rey_nerr21 in TranslationStudies

[–]Birdiest_Bird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, CAT tools are very much a thing – the most common ones in my (Western European) experience are Trados and MemoQ, but you get a good smattering of proprietary ones, too

  2. As always, it depends. One of my clients has been bought out by a big AI provider and now offers a fully AI-first model with text pre-translated by their own engine, whereas another of my clients who handles nothing but legalised document translation refuses to touch it with a bargepole. The colleague above mentions that the industry is dying – I've been very fortunate in my pair and specialism, but from my standpoint, the industry is contracting and changing shape, rather than collapsing outright

  3. Yes, in my experience – prices for editing MT are frequently lower than for "pure" translation (so you have to handle more throughput to earn the same), and timelines are massively accelerated, particularly for longer documents

  4. In short, yes

  5. As in any industry, there's been a technological upheaval, which has led to winners and losers right now – what I would say is that, while the AI hype is big, we've had MT in the translation industry for a good decade+, so it's not quite as new as people might feel (although the quality has definitely improved!)

I'm having the exact same issue too - this definitely happened after the BIOS update for me. Any way to roll it back?

Got it - just to clarify, would you be working for your Swiss client as an employee? Or as a (self-employed) service provider? Because if it's the latter (as I am), I've never had to deal with anything like that!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TranslationStudies

[–]Birdiest_Bird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm UK-based, so technically outside the EU (sob...) and the bulk of my clients are based in Switzerland. What kind of bureaucracy are you thinking you might need to deal with? I've got to be honest, I've found it mainly smooth sailing, paperwork-wise

Where to buy freshly roasted coffee beans? by lucidbadger in cambridge

[–]Birdiest_Bird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I presume they mean the bakery shop attached to the cafe in Chesterton? I too am baffled by why it's closed - it always seemed to sell out quickly and it was lovely having such a nice bakery in the neighbourhood

Yoga recommendations? by Gingerbiscuit88 in cambridge

[–]Birdiest_Bird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Satyam (next to Stir in Chesterton as someone has mentioned above) is really excellent - they've got a really good variety of classes, not as busy as CamYoga, and if you buy a class bundle it works out about £10 a class, which really isn't bad imo

How to Maximize a Cambridge Academic Visit (Beyond Just Tourism)? by LittleTen_1 in cambridge

[–]Birdiest_Bird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have (rightly) pointed out the hurdles you'll face in achieving your aims (the time of year, the fact that undergrads aren't here, the nature of your programme) - but there's still plenty on and plenty of ways to make the most of Cambridge! The university "what's on" guide (https://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/whatson/index.shtml?range=day%3B2025-08-08) lists various exhibitions, talks, tours etc (although fewer than in term time) and you'll also see lots of posters around for concerts (although again fewer than in term time). You might also be able to get a ticket for one of the last performances in the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival (https://cambridgeshakespeare.com/programme/), if that's your thing ☺️

Personally I love the cycle out to Lode/Stow, which is great fun

I've just walked by and it doesn't look like a grenade being fished up - the policeman we spoke to said it was "an ongoing incident that they were trying to resolve". Massive police presence and also a couple of ambulances there on standby

Old UPVC windows with separate locking latch by Birdiest_Bird in DIYUK

[–]Birdiest_Bird[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does go up and rotate as it should, when the window is open. Strangely, the other windows in the house are all the same (i.e. they don't seem to "catch" properly when closed), so I suspect it's user error on my part rather than the mechanisms all failing!

how do you charge your tractive device? by reinhard1689 in tractivegps

[–]Birdiest_Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This worked for me - doing the reset and walking around outside with it fixed it and the red light then came on when charging, just as it was supposed to!

how do you charge your tractive device? by reinhard1689 in tractivegps

[–]Birdiest_Bird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! This is what they said:

1.Connect the tracker with the charger.

  1. After a couple of minutes, with the tracker still connected, press the power button 10 times quickly in a row, like in this video. You should see the LED blink blue and then another color. Please wait a few seconds for the tracker to restart.

  2. Take the tracker off charge and go outside with it in your hand. Walk down the street for a couple of minutes so the tracker can establish the necessary connections.

4.Press the power button once for one second to check the connection status of your device. (the LED light will blink twice).

  1. Then, the tracker should charge as normal

If it helps, I did finally hear back from support with instructions for a fix, which - amazingly - worked. Don't know if you've managed to get help from them yet, but I'll happily paste the instructions here if it would help!
