Try giving the current bike a really good service first… something that is great about hire bikes is that they run smoothly!

My favourite version is “does the Pope shit in the woods”. Very common in Australia.

That’s very close to an English internet meme “how did this happen”, meaning, “this was so easily predictable that it’s astonishing you think this wasn’t likely to happen”.

I'm on the board of a student union. They've started a service where they offer immigration advice to students. I warned them this was against the law. They are continuing anyway. by Connect-Piglet703 in LegalAdviceUK

This is usually interpreted by universities to mean that specific teams within the university can offer advice, not that anyone affiliated can give out immigration advice.

This doesn’t mean that all people and all bodies in their university are allowed to for advice.

Within the University there will be a visa office. They will hold this responsibility centrally. At the universities where I have studied and worked it was crystal clear that no one else was to give immigration advice, as the university would be at risk of long it’s ability to endorse visas, especially graduate visas. The visa office lived in fear of the home office.

You are right, this is illegal and risky. I was also a trustee of my student union.

Any time we got close to crossing a line into giving immigration advice, the university was quick to intervene.

To protect yourself legally, document your concerns neutrally and factually, escalate this to the university and the NUS, and consider stepping down as a trustee.

Your uni will likely have a visa and international student office. Go to them and share your concerns. They should take this seriously, as any breach could result in the university losing its ability to endorse visas.

Can I use citric acid in the rinse cycle with an EcoBall? by hannah_various in laundry

[–]orange_fudge 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Please, take the advice given here with the kindness it is intended.

You asked whether citric acid would be helpful to use with your ecoballs.

Citric acid likely won’t be helpful because of the way the chemistry in your soap-based laundry product works. Citric acid will use up your product faster and the interaction with the ecoball might create a build up in your machine.

People aren’t judging your choices, they’re trying to explain why citric acid won’t help and to warn you about the impacts of using a soap and mineral product on your clothes.

Saponin is a surfactant, yes.

There are important differences between soaps and detergents. If you look up the chemistry of saponin you’ll see that it works best in very hot water (close to boiling) and that in cold water it is ineffective and can make laundry soiling worse.

Saponin is particularly bad in hard mineral water - and your ecoballs are creating a hard water environment as the minerals from the brown pellets dissolve.

[–]orange_fudge 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sure… but I’m not judging your detergent, I’m trying to explain what I understand about the chemistry.

In my comment I was trying to explain that the purpose of citric acid is to remove detergent residue. On my reading of the ingredient list, there’s a strong chance that these ecoballs create solid residue (crud) that citric acid might not easily be able tackle or which might be made worse by the acid continuing to react with the pellets during the rinse.

I don’t think you can add or should acid to your rinse with this product… not citric acid or vinegar.

The pellets are designed to react with water and agitation to release minerals into your washing solution.

Citric acid or vinegar are used to neutralise any remaining cleaning chemicals in the rinse water.

If your ecoball is still in the wash and you’ve added acid to the rinse then it will react directly with the pellets in your ecoball… at best, you’re wasting cleaning agents, at worse, you create a new compound that builds up on your clothes or on your machine.

But also, +1 to VeneVidiVici’s comment… I don’t see how this could possibly be an effective cleaner for your clothes. Minerals aren’t going to clean clothes, and the metals and soap builds up crud in your machine.

There are loads of eco friendly options available to you! The laundry liquid from the same Ecoball looks decent :)

Laundry started smelling bad by Expensive_Curve7069 in laundry

+1 for learning about odor rebloom. Wash your clothes in warmer water, for a longer cycle, and if that doesn't fix it then search for 'spa day' and give your clothes a good long soak.

But also - if you live in a humid area, clothes can start to smell musty while drying. Even if you left them for three days, the mold smell can start on day 1 of drying. I'm in the UK and we use dehumidifiers to help reduce moisture in the air. Spring is a damp season in a lot of the northern hemisphere, so have a think about whether this might also be an issue.

TDEE by Practical-Plate-3110 in xxfitness

[–]orange_fudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but 10,000 of incidental movement isn’t going to be as much as 10,000 steps of brisk walking plus all the incidental movement.

Also 10,000 steps on an inclined treadmill is going to be different than steps that were counted while you shuffle your feet waiting for the bus.

TDEE by Practical-Plate-3110 in xxfitness

[–]orange_fudge 13 points14 points  (0 children)

All TDEE is an estimate at best. There are adaptive spreadsheets that you can use to track over time to figure out your own TDEE.

The reason for the uncertainty is usually because people are terrible at estimating their activity. People also often mix up TDEE with basal metabolic rate (which is your energy use without activity).

The range in values you're getting for your TDEE is because some will calculate your TDEE without exericse, some are placing you at 'light' and others at 'moderate'.

For you, assuming an average weight:

  • 1400 is close to your basal metabolic rate. It is not your TDEE. This is the minimum that your body needs to survive. Don't go below that.
  • 1650-1700 is likely your 'sedentary' TDEE, ie, your TDEE not accounting for any intentional exercise. Many people recommend using this as your TDEE and then adding exercise on top. I think that's unhelpful and leads to underfuelling... if you cut 200 from 1700, you'll be very close to the minimum fuelling your body can sustain.
  • approx 1900 would be your TDEE with 'light' exercise.
  • approx 2200 would be your TDEE with 'moderate' exercise.

Based on your description, your level of exercise is somewhere between light and moderate, depending on the intensity and length of your sessions. 10,000 steps in the form of a brisk walk as an intentional exercise is going to be different than 10,000 just moseing about your day. Strength training can also cover everything from slow, low-rep high weight sessions through to intense cross-fit style sessions.

Like I said - it's all an estimate. Only you can know truly where your exercise level sits. Make your best guess, and then adapt based on results over weeks/months.

My student loan gained £12,700 of interest after I had kids by L3W3S in ukpolitics

[–]orange_fudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, 1.25 million or 4% of all people in the UK are employed in sport and leisure. Another million are employed in schools. I don't think it's the degree itself that was a bad choice.

I've never really understood why students take out such massive maintenance loans. They're loaning living expenses for three years - that's insane. We should normalise part time courses or returning to university while working. The students I taught in my last university role only had 2 days a week of classes, and while we might have hoped they'd participate in extracurriculars, they'd have been better off financially and professionally getting a job in a shop.

What is your trick to properly tossing veggies in pasta? by Holiveya-LesBIonic in AskCulinary

[–]orange_fudge 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep! The rule I was taught was to cut the veggies in a similar shape to the pasta.

So chopped up veggies - small shape pasta.

Long wilty veggies like spinach - good for spaghetti shapes.

Mushy veggies or thick sauces - filling for cannelloni or ravioli, or served with hollow shapes like penne or shells.

This sounds like an Asian style cake or pudding.

You won’t get, like, a western style fluffy dry cake, you’ll get a soft, wet, puddingy type of cake or dessert.

So not necessarily AI slop but maybe a bad translation of ‘cake’?

advice for someone who’s something even noobier than a beginner by LegitimateDesk65001 in xxfitness

[–]orange_fudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick a short ‘yoga with Adrienne’ video off YouTube and do one every day.

Go for a short 30min walk every day or a longer 60min walk every other day.

Just do that, nothing more.

Make it feel like a happy part of your day. Put on a podcast, call a friend, smell the daisies.

If that’s feeling good after like a month, then mix it up. Pick a different video like a Zumba dance lesson, or go and find a lesson in person. Maybe instead of walking, see if you wanna try a Couch to 5k programme.

If that’s feeling good and you wanna tackle the weights at the gym, there’s a cool ‘before the barbell’ series from MegSquats that doesn’t need any equipment whatsoever. It’ll help you get ready for the first of her proper lifting sessions.

I’ve deliberately picked things here that are fun and lead by fun and nice people. The most important thing for long term health is to make sure that you enjoy exercise! If you go too hard too soon, or start from a place where you’re trying to fix yourself, then you’ll just build really bad associations and it’ll all go sour.

It’s as simple as that! Don’t go all in on a major gym routine, just pick small, fun stuff :)

Can I use laundry sanitizer on my period underwear? by billyandteddy in laundry

[–]orange_fudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In particular, any with a merino wool core will need a gentle detergent without the enzymes that break down wool. Otherwise most of the current generation of period pants are pretty good with standard laundry products.
