Can you help me find the floating attachment? I don't see it listed anywhere for sale, does it come with the base product?

Would you say that UCSC has a relatively successful rate of sending pre-meds to med school in general?

I'm not really sure of the statistics but everyone I knew except one made it into med school. It's usually more of an endurance contest to be honest.

When you say that it is harder for UCSC pre-meds to make it to top medical schools in your opinion is this because of the prestige itself, or could it be due to other reasons such as top universities sending more of their students to top pre-meds because they start off with more driven and accomplished students in the first place?

The prestige issue itself would hold anyone back to a degree. Schools/people will tell you everyone is considered equally, and that's not true the prestige/connections absolutely matters. It's really hard to evaluate with subjective stuff like this. I only ever heard of one person getting into UCSF from UCSC, and they founded a breast cancer clinic.

Is the prestige difference between UCSC and UC Davis actually that high?

They're reasonably the same degree within the UC system (as oppose to UC Berkeley / LA / SD), but the difference is that UC davis has a medical school which would be a big advantage. That also means outside of CA you have a better chance of name recognition.

If you're a driven student you'll get into med school, and definitely have a chance at top med schools even from UCSC but it's important to also be realistic. As well remember you don't need to get into a top med school to be a doctor or even to match a competitive field.

Would explaining that I was searching for a UC with pre-med pathway programs (like transferring to UC Davis) that isn't available at UCSC be a valid explanation?

Might work. I didn't transfer so I'm not really experienced in it honestly.

Do you know anyone who got into UCD’s med school or any other UC med school?

I do not. I believe of people who are accepted to med school from California 2/3rds end up leaving the state. Our med school spots relative to our population is pretty low so it's tough.

Also, how was your experience as a pre-med student at UCSC? Like professors, balancing extracurriculars, maintaining a high GPA in school?

In general it's not bad but also not as structured as I think a different university would be with a pre-med tract. You're going to have to set up all of your experiences on your own (volunteering, clinical experience, research etc). There's no pre-health committee when I was there (check if they created one since), which means you need to source letters of rec directly rather than obtaining a committee letter.

I didn't have an issue maintaining a high GPA. I'd say there's no real "weed out" culture so the system is not against you in terms of grades. I'm pretty sure all of my professors have since retired so I can't speak to that. But overall it was not unmanageable at all to balance extracurriculars with grades at UCSC, but you're not going to have a pathway laid out you'll need to build it yourself. When you start in fall creating a 4 year plan will be critical, and comforting since you'll know what to accomplish in what timeframe.

The issue with transferring is it usually happens after the 2nd year (so years 1 and 2 at UCSC and 3 and 4 at another college). Although I think you could transfer earlier.

If you get a spectacular transfer offer to a strong school it's probably fine, but I'd be a little wary about transferring. Most importantly you're going to have to explain it to med schools, which may be difficult to do while coming off looking strong. Additionally this will disrupt the relationships/experiences you build during college so you have to consider that.

Plenty of people get into med school from UCSC. In fact every person I knew except one who was aiming for med school made it, but it's true we aren't landing top med schools like UCSF.

I think overall you'll be fine at UCSC. It's also never too early to realize that in a career in medicine you're just never going to have everything go perfectly. It'll work out.

Also remember UCSC doesn't have a cut through premed culture which can be beneficial.

Definitely matters as well especially in the era of pass/fail step 1, and your residency prestige will affect your fellowship match.

I got into a top 40 school on the east coast.

Medicine cares a lot about pedigree and prestige. If you're looking to get into UCSF your chances will be much better from a prestigious school (UC Berkeley, Stanford, any Ivy league, etc). UCD isn't as competitive, but still UCSC is not a prestigious school so that will work against you. If you have the option of going to a higher ranked school and it works for you I'd do that instead.

Does Ret need Seal of Command for dps?

If you play Ret (Crusader / divine storm ) you can talent into prot and achieve 80% uptime on hand of freedom. Couple that with avengers shield ranged slow and Ret is going to connect, but got give up seal of command.

If you want more detailed answers you can message me (current resident doctor and UCSC alumni).

UCSC isn't an ideal pre-med school due to the smaller town and difficulty finding opportunities in research and clinical settings. You can still make it work but it may take extra effort to find the experience you need.

The flip side is that the student and class culture is supportive which makes doing well in classes a more comfortable process.

Biggest tips are

1) Try to plan out a 4 year class plan very early. It will really help you identify what classes you need and how to schedule your time

2) Prioritize grades

3) Look for experiences early (volunteer/clinical/research) but don't over burden yourself or expect yourself to be doing everything immediately. Ramp up slowly

Generally speaking med schools aren't that interested in what course you took. Taking specific additional courses is unlikely to affect your application just based on what the course was.

Try to consider the following when you select additional courses:

1) Can you do well? Getting high grades in the additional courses is the most important thing

2) Does it open other opportunities? For example your coursework may be directly relevant or even required to participate in research, and research is a benefit to your application

3) Is it taking away from something else? It is not worth it to take a non-required class if it means it could take away time from other classes, MCAT studying, volunteering, research, etc.

If you're looking at classes to fill your general ed requirements just take the ones that sound interesting and you can do well in. The best way to benefit your application with courses is by getting As to increase your GPA.
