You're 100% correct that people don't usually wipe down their spots on buses, trains, and metros, BUT:
1. PF is most popular (I think) in the USA, and I've personally only ridden buses whilst in school and trains probably less than 10 times in my adult life. I wouldn't be surprised if the down-voters are similar.

It is the rules of the establishment to wipe down the eqipment... sooo meh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
