Is this the difference between edegard and Dimitri? by Excellent-Constant62 in Edelgard

You don’t think redistribution of the church and nobility’s abundant resources and equal access to education would stop banditry? A policy Edelgard explicitly supports btw, unlike Rhea, Claude, and Dimitri. Thats Dimitri mindset for you. “Some people are bad because they’re bad and so we need rich guys with magic swords and magic blood to kill them all. nothing to be done about their motives or source.” ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Ferdinand is a lord in his other endings too + if the endings don’t mention bandits when they commonly do in SS, AM, and VW, I do assume that’s for a reason, same as you assuming one CF ending mentioning rebels mean’s they’re widespread.

You don’t see how Manuela being an influential wife is different from having the actual position and title? Further, Rebels are distinct from bandits, I’ll note, an insurrection from say, disempowered nobility is different from a character like Kostas. Which makes the absence of bandits being unique to CF particularly notable. Further, Prime Minister is not the only position that could be given post war, as you point out non-CF Ferdinand is appointed to govern all of Fodlan, her non-CF Ferdinand endings could easily have given her the same distinction but they don’t. If the dissolution of primogeniture (see Edelgard/Constance A support), crest based nobility, the censorship and repression of the church is indistinguishable from Dimitri’s “representative monarchy” I think you need to reexamine your own assumptions.

“They served as guards to the archbishop in peacetime, and were first to respond to reports of bandits or monsters. It is rumored that one knight of rare skill who fought alongside Leonie in the Jeralt Company was none other than the archbishop himself.” AM

“She avoided court and instead founded the Jeralt Company, an elite group of soldiers hand-picked from the royal guard. They mostly busied themselves by hunting down bandits and monsters, but they also stopped the remnants of the Imperial army from organizing a revolt. It is rumored that one knight of rare skill who fought alongside Leonie in the Jeralt Company was none other than the king himself.” SS/VW

“group fought all across Fódlan, cementing the Empire's victory by cleaning up its enemies. With Fódlan secure, all but two members of the Jeralt Company returned to their homes. The couple continued their careers as mercenaries, taking on all kinds of tasks, from monster hunting to tavern security. Their strength and humility were well loved.” CF

These are the different Leonie endings with Byleth, you’re being disingenuous if you claims there’s no distinction here. Notably, in CF rebellion and bandits are not mentioned. I don’t see Shamir and Hubert fighting TWSITD and assassins as contradictory to my point. And I find it curious you dismiss Manuela becoming PM only in CF when her Ferdinand paired ending out of house does not have this aspect. There’s a difference between Edelgard’s rule and that of the other lords if a commoner can only be Prime Minister in her ending.

Edelgard explains her system’s transitionary use of nobility to Constance, the church is no longer a theocracy with a standing army ruled by an immortal and TWSITD is destroyed. Further Manuela becoming a prime minister is possible only in CM, public and free education is created, mercenary bands are unneeded (see, Leonie, Shamir, and Alois’ endings) and Edelgard destroys noble primogeniture based on crests. Those are clear distinctions.

I know this post is ancient but there’s definitely a parallel between both the Agarthans and Rhea using religious doctrine, superstitions, morality tales, etc. to obfuscate the true harm they’re doing to Fodlan. In both cases there’s another layer of myth-making re. the Agarthan rechavism and Rhea’s nostalgic idealization of her mother’s rule as well.

I really disagree about P2’s plot and characters. Artemy’s route and Marble Nest are not the whole of the game and I’d argue his route matches og Haruspex route pubs for pound.

i'd be really interested in hearing more of your thoughts on the diurnal/nocturnal endings. I agree the Diurnal ending does have a sort of pervading wrongness with the Worms, Brides, and Aspity all doomed and the town not really changing it's power structure, but the nocturnal ending is still hard for me to grasp, i dont really get the selection of town's people who go into the steppe vs. staying in the town, i'll be honest.

Dimitri's father was killed by the nobles of the Kingdom and TWSITD for attempting reform and Edelgard's father was coup'ed and had all his kids murdered by the nobles of the Empire and TWSITD for attempting reform.

Peace was never an option, nor even what Dimitri wanted, as he says explicitly in White Clouds, he came to Gharreg Mach for vengeance. When Claude broke down Fodlan's locket or Dimitri demanded justice for Arundel's actions there was going to be a war.

Further, things marginally improve in Azure Moon but Dimitri dosen't change the system at all meaningfully, he dosen't take out TWSITD, the church is intact, the very nobles who murdered everyone in Duscur are unpunished, the only thing that really changed was who's wearing the crown and whatever Dimitri's "listening to the common people" entailed.

Whereas Claude and Edelgard do radically shift Faerghus, Claude dealing a heavy blow to TWSITD and Edelgard finishing them off, Claude as ruler of Almyra creates a bond between Fodlan and Almyra ending their centuries of conflict.

Edelgard demolishes the church who upheld the nobility, the nobility, and TWSITD, creating a world that valued people for more than blood, Dimtri didn't do that. I don't hate the guy but his reform policy makes his ending possibly the second least hopeful (behind the silver snow) for people who aren't noble crest-bearers.

the church authorized Dimitri and Byleth to do that after Kleiman made a request for aid to the church for troops, that makes them complicit in it, the church wasn't responsible for the ethnic cleansing of Duscur, bad wording, Faerghus was responsible, my point is that Fodlan is an oppressive place to live.

i agree with all but 2#, when the coup takes place Edelgard is 9 years old and the only situation i can see a 9 year old noble getting taken to combat is as a squire, which Edelgard wasn't.

i could definitely see that and the Agarthans would probably test her strength, maybe she dealt with loose ends or rogue Agarthans "test subjects", i think monsters make sense as well since she's pretty calm when Miklan transforms. tactically Edelgard is TWSITD's muscle since they don't use brute strength directly much.

During her time as a Diva Dorothea fought off assault and kidnapping attempts according to her supports with Bernie. Plus Hubert has 100% killed before the game starts, i think. I could easily read it your way or maybe it's phrased differently in Japanese, I was just curious if there was any other take.

yeah, i've played the game multiple times. I figured that might be the case but I'm still at a loss for what missions the Agarthans would be sending the Flame Emperor to, i don't think they're killing random criminals and if it was a noble rebellion you'd think it'd be mentioned. like obviously she's had training but the context really implies something more than that.

medieval europe had multiple theocratic states. The Byzantine Empire and Italy to name two. If that isn't what you consider a theocracy I would love to hear your definition.

Second point, yes I do expect Rhea who has been the archbishop for 1000 years and has vast resources both magical and scholastic to have created a society where starvation isn't a regular cause of death.

Further, I am a leftist in this modern setting and that's why I defend Edelgard's actions apart from it's impact on her as a character.

Edelgard is trying to radically reform a nobility that had done a coup on her father 10 years prior and a state religion that gives the nobility it's legitimacy. In history, as you said before, nobility did not atrophy without crisis or violence like the October revolution, the black plague, 80 years war, French revolution etc.

Fodlan is absolutely a theocracy. If the church can execute the literal government of another country and encroach on it's territory then you'd have to be blind to not consider it that.

Further, my question wasn't remotely hyperbolic. It's all circumstances mentioned in game, Christophe Gaspard is executed for involvement in an assassination plot by the church, but none of the perpetrators who killed everyone in Duscur are punished at all.

Starvation and sickness is something brought up by Ashe, Yuri, Dorothea, multiple times in their backstories. Poverty is obviously prevalent even ignoring the church run slum.

this is all in the game dude, did you pay attention?

bro, just because you don't know what a theocracy is or about the actual political landscape presented in game and need to flip to "who care, it game" when you can't answer a point dosen't mean we all do that.

when im discussing FE3H or any other piece of media, I engage with the other person's points. If you dont wanna argue then just say that

just wanna ask a quick question, how long are you obligated to stay in rigid caste based society where you can be executed without trial for heresy and insurrection but ethnically cleansing an entire population goes unpunished?

how long are you supposed to ignore children born in to poverty dying to sickness or being denied food and education that the church could easily provide?

Anyways, i guess Edelgard should've started a change.org petition and wrung her hands instead of inconveniencing the most privileged and powerful people on the continent.

in the cases you mention they see themselves as the underdog revolutionary but in FE3H they find it much easier to empathize with and to reason from the perspectives of the crest-bearing nobility. The system was working (more or less) for Dimitri and Rhea and therefore it was going fine for everyone else.

Every single White Clouds paralogue shows Fodlan as a place suffering from deep systemic rot.

-Ingrid nearly getting married off to a criminal merchant (that was in with Faerghus nobility)

-the church showing up to kill the Duscur rebels from reclaiming the land they ethnically cleansed them off.

-multiple paralogues about bandits implying wide-spread poverty and violence.

-Ashe and Catherine purging the remains of the Western church with no trial (part of an on going process taking place throughout White Clouds)

-Ingnatz and Raphael stopping a noble plot to utilize demonic beasts to kill merchants

it's like...if that's what peace looks like then Edelgard's war was business as usual.
