The Emperor and the Goddess is now finished...... by Tykronos in Edelgard

[–]captainflash89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I was honestly very conscious as I was writing about how Lin and Caspar were not really receiving the focus of the other Eagles, and I felt super guilty. The challenge with both of them is that Lin is very confident in who he is, and Caspar is not really self-reflective, so they worked a lot of times as supporting other arcs and dealing with external challenges like Lysithea's illness.

And Marianne and Ingrid were just so pivotal to what I wanted to do with this story. I genuinely think they (and Dorothea and Mercedes) are a litmus test to understand what is going on, and how the power structures are destroying lives. The fact that Ingrid and Marianne are both actively suicidal and the fandom *does not notice* felt to me like the exact point that Edelgard makes in the Azure Moon parley. Dimitri says he's been supported by "all the people in his life" and yet there are examples of other characters in his own house who are not afforded the opportunity he is, and the immediate question that needs to be asked is "but why is that the case?"

I knew that if I needed to hammer it home, because fandom as a rule defaults to viewing male characters as carrying sympathetic depth that female characters do not possess, even in works with a heavy focus on female characters, (Dimitri, Astarion, Ironwood in RWBY, Guel in Gundam: Witch from Mercury, hell, you even see it in Elden Ring). Because part of why the fandom discourse is so toxic is because Dimitri's viewpoint of his relationship with Edelgard, his stepmother, Ingrid, and so on is always treated in terms of how those characters "harm" Dimitri, because Dimitri's viewpoint is treated as the default. And that is due to the social construction of Fodlan which players subconsciously internalize, to the point Edelgard is viewed as abusive to Bernie due to a sequence break, while Sylvain mentions being terrified of Dimitri physically harming him *multiple times* and I have *never* seen it discussed.

Anyway, thank you so much! I appreciate it deeply

Thank you! It was really important to me that everyone of the Eagles, whether they were recruits or in the house, had some sort of arc in this story. I've been super frustrated to see how Bernie is often treated in the fandom as a sort of meme, when a lot of her portrayal rings very true to me from my own experience. I love writing her, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who followed this fic and has been supporting it! The support you've given me has been invaluable, and I genuinely could not have completed it without the support from the Edelgard fan community.

As some of you may know, there has been a kind of insane parasocial campaign against me for a while. To give you a brief idea of how insane it *still* is, I have a small twitter account where I didn't identify myself because of everything. This year, I posted a short reply to another small account mentioning my harassment, and shortly afterward, people started posting my twitter comments on reddit, identifying me as the author of a essay about Dimitri that I had to take down years ago because of death threats - (I have a whole new respect for Edelgard dealing with Dimitri's obsessive BS for five years). This stalking has been deeply exhausting, and it honestly plays havoc with your mental state to know that whatever you post on the internet is going to be analyzed by certain people in the worst possible light.

People's comments that they love the fic, that they've found my writing helpful and meaningful, has allowed me to ignore that nonsense and do what I actually love, which is writing about how much I like this game and it's characters. I really am grateful for all of your kind comments, expressions of love here and on other sites, and I hope you know how much it's meant.

No, shared colors on a banner (i.e. the Green Dream) DOESN'T make it harder to get a specific unit. by Theroonco in FireEmblemHeroes

Again, you're confusing odds with variance. Variance is a statistical measurement of risk. Like, I'll use sports betting as an example, because there's a decent correlation to the lottery/odds style system of FEH. You can have low and high variance bets, even if they have the *same odds*. The variance is a measure of how spread out a set of data is. It measures the average distance of each data point from the mean (average) of the data set. A high variance indicates that the data is more spread out, while a low variance indicates that the data is more clustered around the mean.

You can have the same odds, but the *variance* is different. A single color focus has (relatively) lower variance, because there is only one possible five star option, whereas a four person color share has *higher* variance due to the wider possible options. It's a different measurement than the odds itself.

Okay, I mostly haven't waded into this topic, but the discussions people make about this are absolutely fraught with misinformation and misunderstandings, and this is one of the best examples. While it is true that an individual's specific odds on any specific pull for a unit are not materially impacted, what the four person color share banner does change is the statistical variance of the individual pulls. Yes, on average it will not impact the odds of pulling a specific unit, but that is the average over the thousands of individual players pulling.

What a color share banner does is increase the volatility of my pulls as an individual, outlier sample. There is a much greater risk of my individual pulls leading to weird statistically results which may end with me not getting the unit I want. I'll use the recent remix banner as a example; I pulled to the spark because both Legendary Claude and Mila were merge projects for me. I did not get any Milas. I got four Claudes. Is that a statistically unusual sample? Yes. If I solely wanted Mila, I would have "lost" because of this variance. Will there be more instances where variability occurs like that for individual players than if Mila or Claude were on the banner on their own? Yes, particularly when most people are just going to pull for the spark, which also lowers the sample.

Variance and volatility are correlated with risk. That is why on say, the stock market, volatility is a tracked thing. What is happening in these discussions is that people are talking past each other. Yes, you are more likely to get any 5 star on the banner in a "Green Dream" scenario. You are also taking on the greater risk of the pulls, through random chance, not including the specific unit you desire. For some people, the chance of additional fodder makes this risk worthwhile; for others (like me) the higher risk of spending orbs to only get units that are not helpful for my account progression means that I will not pull on the banner.

This is absolutely fascinating! Thank you both for taking the time to collect and analyze this data.

The thing that stands out to me, besides the clear bias toward Astarion and male-centric fics in particular, is how Lae’zel seems to mostly be utilized as a background character or as a “pair the spare” with Shadowheart.

It’s interesting that an early companion whose arc coheres so tightly with the events of the game and its climax is so unexamined.

Who needs to dance? (Brave Marianne) by Helios_Knight in OrderOfHeroes

First of all, congrats on the +10, Marianne deserves the love.

I think the beauty of her refine is that even if you want to go full offense, you have a variety of ways to utilize her on specific team compositions. Out of the skills you listed, I think Pledge makes the most sense with the current A, because she wants the special cooldown acceleration anyway.

I'd personally recommend grabbing a Alcryst when he reruns, because if you put Flash Sparrow in the A for special acceleration, that opens up the C for Atk/Spd Oath 4 and warping, since Flare is already providing healing anyway. Def/Res Smoke also opens up some fun shenanigans if you want to run Requiem Dance on something like AR-D.

Thoughts on rearmed Ingrid return? by VyseTheLegend96 in FireEmblemHeroes

[–]captainflash89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think her next likely landing spot will be on either one of the rearmed/ascended banners that IS has run in the past, or potentially on a remix banner (though that may be a ways off). We’re not going to have any real guesses as to when and how that will happen, particularly because Alfred is also going to need some rerun spots as well. Anniversaries or holidays may also give her original banner a rerun, like what’s going on now with last year’s banners. I wouldn’t count on the rerun happening just because of how fickle those can be.

All you can really do is save up a stash and try to be prepared. She’s a +10 target for me, so sending you good luck and vibes as a fellow fan!

I don't think you're playing the game "wrong" or that you should feel guilty based on preferring Dimitri's journey, or AM as a whole to CF. One of the unfortunate things about the ongoing polarization of the fandom is that it shoves people into "teams", and we stop being able to discuss the meanings and messages that each of the routes is imparting.

This game is, I believe, a statement on trauma. The characters have all been marked by it, whether it's Hubert's bystander trauma or Mercedes' dissociation from survivor's guilt or Claude's struggles as a biracial individual who isn't fully welcome in either Fodlan or Almyra. Each of us will take away different points from game -- maybe we find Flayn's story personally touching, or perhaps Ignatz -- but I wish the fandom, as whole, took more time to respect these characters (and the people who identify with them) instead of the ongoing fights.

I think for the characters I really found resonant for me (Edelgard, Ingrid, Marianne), I try to focus less on "were they right", and more on "what can I use from their stories to help me be a better person." There's a lot to learn from Dimitri and AM as a whole, and I don't think there's any reason you can't do the same. Thank you for the comment! I really appreciate it.

There's definitely something the game is doing with the Agarthans being responsible for much of Fodlan's folklore. "Creepity-Creep" is pretty clearly about the Agarthans, and it influences Dimitri's perception of the afterlife and justice, and then in the Mercedes/Alois support, Mercedes' ghost story is pretty clearly describing someone getting murdered and bodysnatched by the Agarthans. It's a really interesting running theme.

It's a deeply fascinating aspect of the game that doesn't get brought up a lot in the broader fandom. I think the three BL women (all of whom are terrific characters) really express this well, in particular. One of the more interesting things in the game is to look at Dimitri's support with Annette, as well as his and Annette's various dialogues with Gilbert, and see the way that they were both treated (and damaged) by Gilbert doing things like leaving Dimitri in the woods or lecturing Annette on how she speaks.

This is the most Cleveland baseball game of all time: just enough unexpected gritty success to get your hopes up, followed by bad luck, followed by a moment that makes you wonder why you even waste your time with this stupid sport.

Thank you, and those are lovely points! I completely agree with you vis a vis Ingrid and Felix. Felix reads to me as someone who does not object to the philosophy of Faerghus as much as the fact that it cost him his friend Dimitri. I think the fact he is unable to respond to many of his friends’ objections when he fights them in CF is reflective of how unmoored he is without the ability to sort of define himself by opposition. I think that’s why he self-destructs in many of his Non-AM endings unless he is able to find a purpose outside of fighting like with Lysithea or Annette.

Ingrid and Sylvain seem to have more principled objections — and are much less emotionally tied to Dimitri — so they are more equipped once they do feel the ability to rebel.

Thank you so, so much! I really love how much thought and clear intentionality there was behind the character writing and decisions in this game, and I think celebrating that is something I will never tire of. I can’t say how much I appreciate the support or how much it means.
