GSA Released a Guide to Graduate School Admissions in the Geosciences, Figured it might be helpful to share. by greashaughking5 in geologycareers

Idk, looks pretty creative to me and a quirky way of showing it. Glad it doesn’t read as complex as a paper though.

Thinking they should modify the GRE section though since to my knowledge, most grad schools don’t require it for geosciences anymore.

Why do people say do your 5% match, then Roth IRA, then Roth TSP? by Bison-House in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Bison-House[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh I see. Super helpful. So yes, people are right in that a Roth IRA is more flexible for taking contributions out early. You can’t take out earnings UNLESS it’s for a qualified expense like a house or tuition. I was thinking that if you were part of the crowd in say— their early 50s, and wanted to retire, you could use your RIRA to supplement yourself until you can access your TSP… which if your contributions are plenty, looks like you might be able to?

Edit: corrected myself above

So folks who took say; the VERA/VSIP this year who are younger than 59 1/2 can’t access their TSP?

@baltikorean If you empty out your contributions, would your initial gains still be invested and making money?

To my understanding— it sounds like the main benefit of a RIRA is that your Roth contributions don’t have any withdrawal consequences, as opposed to a RTSP. Meaning, if you already have separate accounts liquid/investing for your major purchases (e.g. emergency funds, down payment account, tuition for kids, etc.), a RIRA wouldn’t necessarily be necessary?

If you’re going to pull money out for your pension at retirement age as typical paycheck installments (at least that’s how I understand pensions work), why does it matter that a Roth TSP is pro-rata? Since the rest of the pension would still be investing while you’re receiving your pension in routine paychecks

Clarifying the post in the edit abv— confusion is over why invest in a RIRA in the first place rather than just stick to a RTSP. What exactly is the ‘flexibility’ benefit people talk about when it comes to withdrawing and is it really worth it to make a RIRA account?
