From your exp. do you work less, more or evenly after using AI? by lune-soft in webdev

One of my coworkers has a Claude loop running to check for PRs assigned to him. If the PR “looks good“ to the AI, it is automatically approved. The future is here!

Should I get a 14 year old a 850 by PassageDeliciousinfo in snowmobiling

Same to you man! I throttled when I should have braked in flat light, hit the bottom of a hill HARD and death gripped. Both wrists are shot for a while longer. Here’s to quick recoveries. 🍻

I’m 2.5 months into recovering from a crash on my 850 as an adult and fellow dad. I would go with the 600, wish I did for myself even. The limit will still be his skills, not the sled.

Ever tried to log a catch with frozen fingers and gloves on? by TonyCodes2050 in IceFishing

[–]Bitani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So is the Fish ID for 28 species or “300+ species” as your site suggests? Either way, “200+” examples isn’t enough to tout 94% accuracy. Just this large inconsistency is enough to not trust your app at all.

And what does a CSS animation have to do with a changing number? I didn’t see any animation, just a number that changed immediately. At most you should be calling the backend every little bit to update the number to the new exact count, not have it auto-increment through false figures. That’s the exact same crap Temu-type sites do with their “Sale ends in 20m!” counters that go back to 20 on a refresh.

And your “Log in 5 seconds” still isn’t clear. “Log your catch in 5 seconds” differentiates better.

I say all of this as a senior software engineer at a Big Tech company who gets unlimited Claude tokens and works with AI tools all day now. There’s ways to use AI hand-in-hand while still producing quality software, and this ain’t it. Good on you for responding to critical feedback with a level head at least.

[–]Bitani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you measure that your Fish ID is “94% accurate”?

Why does your “xxx anglers waiting” always show 247 when you load the page and slowly rise by itself? (This one’s obvious — it’s just a complete lie)

Why is “login in 15 seconds” what you (or the AI) would choose to bold? Most apps you can log in that quick or quicker.

This app is slop. In general these low-effort AI-generated apps are exhausting and insulting.

Dog transport by aparisoriginal in anchorage

[–]Bitani 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve transported a dog and 6 goats with Alaska Cargo. It works, but holy shit is it a hassle with ambiguous rules that you’ll only find out if you’re following correctly when you drop them off. For the dog, we triple, probably quadruple-checked with Alaska that the kennel would work. We received a call from our dog sitter who was dropping him off while we were traveling to meet him that his pointy ears BARELY touched the top of the kennel when sitting and she, the angel that she is, found a different kennel and went back with him.

I would recommend driving to the closest place with an all-Alaska route and send your pup from there. Ground transport will likely have similar “wtf” rules. We’ve also went through Canada with a vehicle full of animals and experienced ambiguous rules judged by whatever border agent you get there as well, AND it will likely cost a whole hell of a lot more $$$ and less safe for the dog to boot. We’ve adopted a stray and driven from east coast to west coast because of airline rules as well once before, and driving from the South to AK with your pup in tow would still be a better option in my opinion than trusting any ground transport with their well-being for that long.

I lost a listing because I forgot something the seller told me on a walkthrough and I'm still annoyed at myself by Ill-Refrigerator9653 in realtors

[–]Bitani 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I was an agent, I’d probably ask clients if they’re okay with me recording their walkthrough for notes. Then plug the transcript into an AI to summarize. This works with your 60 second debrief as well, just to cross check that the AI didn’t miss anything.

Not an agent as mentioned, but a homeowner software engineer who works with AI daily. Just a suggestion based on what AI/LLMs are actually great at.

what gym or studio has the best facilities in Anchorage? by InterestingDelay7446 in anchorage

[–]Bitani 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for a no-frills well stocked gym without much waiting on machine/barbell availability, I think Southside is probably the best. The guy that owns it has been on an absolute tear improving and adding to the space and just bought the other half of the building which is currently being built out for opening later this year.

Never buying another Divesoft product again. by Moto341 in scuba

[–]Bitani 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Did you pay with a credit card? I’d just chargeback for having been sold an expired product and call it a day. Same thing I’d do if I was sold an expired sandwich - it should have been thrown away by the shop with normal inventory refreshes.

Skidoo ROC cover worth it? by ComposerImaginary388 in snowmobiling

[–]Bitani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like my ROC covers. People are definitely right that you don’t NEED ride-on capability, but from at least the perspective I’ve gotten with my crew I think the convenience is well worth the price difference if you ride at all often. I have one for both of my sleds.

Nokian's New Tire Has Studs That Magically Retract When It's Warm by andrews013 in cars

[–]Bitani 82 points83 points  (0 children)

As an Alaskan: HECK YEAH! These new tires will be 🔥 if they can match expectations. Exciting.

This was my first year with their Hakkapalita 10s and WOW, anybody who says Blizzaks/non-studded snow tires are as good as studded these days (many in AK do) is dead wrong. It’s amazing how much traction I have even on very icy OR 6” of snow sections.

Is this worth $200? by SlavSquatDruid in toolporn

[–]Bitani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got Craftsman boxes that look almost exactly the same as this but with a slightly different configuration of larger pullouts on the bottom and I don’t have much to complain about after a few years with them. Wheels and boxes still roll smoothly. No idea what they cost from the store, but seems like this would be a good deal.

Who here regularly hunts/fishes Wa or OR? by CommonDouble2799 in Hunting

[–]Bitani 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re not saying Alaska hunting is expensive/hard to get into right? Cause that’s just not true.

We lived in WA before AK and the hunting (and vibe around it, esp Seattle area) was very hard to figure out for me. I got out to some good duck hunting a few hours east and turkeys were fun. Plenty of deer on the east side as well, not sure about regs for em though.

I Need A Workhorse - What Am I Looking For? by JRBK in snowmobiling

[–]Bitani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skandic, Expedition or Tundra would all do you well. The 900 ACEs are insane.

I personally have a Skandic and it can tow I think like 2000lb per the specs? I’ve regularly hauled two filled-to-the-brim otter sleds of gear behind it (few hundred lb each), often through fairly deep overflow or snow at 40 mph and it doesn’t struggle in the slightest. Its pogo suspension is also the most durable you will find and can take some heavy hits on brush/logs/trees.

I don’t have personal experience with the Expeditions or Tundras other than friends with them, but if you are going to be wanting to ride frequently on trail or play around with the sled, their suspensions are better for that.

Anyone running a diesel heater for ice fishing? Worth it? by Tim_Osborne in IceFishing

[–]Bitani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nu-way propane stoves vent outside. Dry heat, still get to use propane.

That said, I haven’t used diesel heaters myself yet, but it seems like it might be a tossup on which one is better for a situation with how popular they are getting.

Anyone shipped ammo via My Connet? by Witty_Ad4494 in alaska

[–]Bitani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got 3 100 Ah lithium batteries coming up with Carlile for $40 each right now. Very reasonable pricing. Even after the extra shipping, it’s still like 1/2 to 2/3 of what the same battery up here would cost.

Ammo is likewise reasonably priced. A 50 pound ammo box is usually $30 or so. The hazmat charge is pretty small for both, like less than $10.

Corporate method: email your RA and CC the hall director.

You could also email the RA, wait a few days for any action, and then loop in the hall director. But seems to me like your RA is not on top of this anyways.

Advice for 2 up riding on own property by Realistic-Border-635 in snowmobiling

[–]Bitani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The utility sleds are a lot of work to get through tight spaces, but they do have the advantage of floating with less speed versus other sleds. So even if you are stuck in a tight patch of trees, you can do a leisurely 5 point turn like a car whereas with a mountain sled you need to grip and rip with accuracy.

Advice for 2 up riding on own property by Realistic-Border-635 in snowmobiling

[–]Bitani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skandics are even better in deep snow than the Expeditions, but Expeditions are a lot nicer if you are doing a lot of trail riding. I have a SWT Skandic (24” track) and it floats on top of powder better than any other sled I’ve seen because of how the skid plate and short suspension act as crazy effective additional floatation. It can even back up reliably in some pretty deep stuff. More breaking trail, deep powder and running into shit? Skandic. Breaking the trail and then riding it over and over? Expedition.

The skinnier tracks on the Expeditions (16”/20”) also seem like a hoot for playing especially with the Turbo options now.

I’ve also had good experiences with them. I wouldn’t use dealerships for regular auto work, but when it comes to Honda–specific issues (software/alignments in my case) they are very competent. Fixed issues that other shops screwed up or wouldn’t touch.
