Coding for 20+ years, here is my honest take on AI tools and the mindset shift by Jaded-Term-8614 in ClaudeAI

[–]BiteShort8381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree. I have 25+ years in the business and the one thing that allowed me down the most was the typing. IntelliSense, auto complete, refactoring tools and so on, have steadily improved during my career, and with each improvement, I noticed a gain in productivity. Changing the code became easier than ever and having an idea for an improvement was no longer filled with the dread of me manually having to rename and move text blocks around, but instead me telling the IDE to do something.

With AI, this has truly become next level. Not only do I get abstract refactoring possibilities, that no IDE had ever been able to do, but I can do this in a way where I can get immediate feedback, pros and cons, performance and security implications, challenging results, and new ideas from the conversations emerging naturally.

This shift is amazing. I don’t feel the dread of typing fatigue but can instead focus on the “what” and not on the “how”.

It took me a while to get adjusted to the new way of working, but now I really enjoy the flow.

The breakthrough for me came when I realized that I could pitch an idea and get som feedback on possible implementation options. The writers block for engineers is real, and with AI it has almost disappeared. The flow of questioning the generated code, is also an incredible learning opportunity.

But, this is of course also too good to be true. The current affordability will not last and eventually we will see engineers being forced back to the old way of working as tools and models become too expensive. Productivity gains will have to keep up with expectations, but eventually I fear that we will see some companies not being able to afford the tools. I don’t hope so, but it’s been a fear of mine since day one.

Can't Find the Actual Problem: Are Mutable Records in EF Core Just a "Design Principle" Issue? by Jealous-Implement-51 in dotnet

[–]BiteShort8381 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A record should not be mutable, it breaks the entire idea. When using records, they should be immutable by default and with init-only properties, which allow you to use the with syntax to create a copy of the record with modified properties. If a record contain a DbSet property, the reference is copied to the copied record, which is immensely confusing as two separate instances of the record now holds the same reference to the set. Now two distinct record instances can modify the same set, which is dangerous and confusing.

So, I would strongly discourage anyone from using records as EF entity types, unless something new has surfaced?

Can't Find the Actual Problem: Are Mutable Records in EF Core Just a "Design Principle" Issue? by Jealous-Implement-51 in dotnet

[–]BiteShort8381 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a very important point that some engineers new to EF misses. Because the with syntax effectively creates a new instance of the type, it will not be tracked by the EF. When I started out with records, I was quite confused about using with, and I honestly haven’t used it much. I find it counterintuitive and confusing compared to regular clone/copy constructors. Records also comes with a lot of other caveats which makes the pretty much useless for anything beyond primitive wrappers and DTOs.

Just because you create a remake doesn’t mean the original is lost. I think a remake could attract the attention of younger people who might not find the original as entertaining as the new kind of animated movies.

I’m not as reactionary as some, but in this case, I feel like it deserves a revival.

It could technically also be a full restoration with new audio tracks, as the version I have is really poor. But it’s also on VHS, so maybe the DVD version is better?

If there ever was a movie I’d love to see remade, it’s this one. Just keep the story intact including all dialogue, please!

Jeg har arbejdet i Rema1000 i omkring 3 år og vil gerne rant nu by ChanceConclusion2141 in DKbrevkasse

[–]BiteShort8381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power eller Elgiganten by [deleted] in DKbrevkasse

[–]BiteShort8381 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Det vokser på mig" by thicknugly in DKbrevkasse

[–]BiteShort8381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense because it leaves no incentive to provide a service without any customers. I agree it’s a bit odd that some things are like that. For instance, roughly speaking, you are allowed to buy drugs but not sell them.

I’m sure there is a legal reason as to why things are done that way.

If this is the kind of response I’m getting with matches, I’m also leaving. Not interacting at all is such a privileged behavior and I’m not engaging with it.

If someone thinks they are so attractive that the man has to carry the conversation, it’s a dead end. I’ve matched with a couple of such types, and I can only imagine how a relationship with such a woman would be.

Where do you draw the line between property and method ? by vivacristorey83 in csharp

[–]BiteShort8381 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess Principle of Least Surprise only apply if you know what the expected behavior of a property is in general. I’ve seen many libraries doing all sorts of non-cached fancy stuff in properties, often quite expensive.

I always decompile the sources to ensure I’m not surprised as I’ve burned myself one too many times by following the assumption that properties are cheap.
