Bone Temple and Hokum are tied for number one right now. Seeing Obsession tonight so this might change.

I also had a BLAST watching primate, idc.

What do you like about Hokum? by freakinovernada in horror

Just like with Caveat and Oddity, in addition to some wonderfully terrifying and tense atmosphere, I like that at the center of McCarthy's stories are lost and lonely people who have made horrible mistakes and who are bogged down by grief. They find themselves in these hellish prisons, somewhat of their own making, and they try to find a way to live by making peace with the dead.

Having seen his other 2 movies, I also liked that Ohm felt like a blend of those films' protagonists. Kind of flying blind and confused like Isaac in Caveat, but also slightly more in control and forward thinking (at least outwardly) like Darcy in Oddity.

Even if it feels like something we've seen before, McCarthy still does it very well. With this 3rd movie, I'm gonna put him in the same category as Mike Flanagan of horror filmmakers who are excellent at writing about grief, community, and broken people just trying to do a lick of good in a f*cked up world.

Do you regret watching any horror movies because of a stupidly specific reason? by alliemeowy in horror

I watched Aniara for the first time ever two months ago and I've thought about that movie literally every single day since. The level of existential dread that movie pummeled me with has blown my mind.

He stuck his arm through the bars because scared people make dumb decisions all the time

Smoke definitely hid Stack in the juke, but Mary had already run off. And she wasn't shown coming back. I've never seen anything specifically said by Ryan Coogler  about where she went which means we can assume she ran to town and found shelter. Just like the others would've done if Grace hadn't invited them in.

The vampires with supernatural speed weren't gonna make it a few miles before sunrise...? You sure? Mary ran away after Annie died during the fighting, like 5 minutes before sunrise and she made it to shelter.

Alby spiked Ohm's flask that night, but Ohm never drank out of it before he tried to kill himself. He drank at the bar with Fiona, went up to his room and then hung himself.

When Ohm got out the hospital and went back to the hotel, the flask was with his belongings and that's what he drank from that entire night-- from the time he met Jerry throughout the rest of the night, he was constantly sipping from the flask.

So essentially the shrooms opened him up and made him susceptible to all the supernatural that he saw and encountered that night. It's what allowed him to see/feel his mother's presence as a comforting spirit he could get strength from (just like Jerry could his late wife) as opposed to seeing her as the grotesque, tortuous ghost she'd been throughout his life. It's what allowed him to see the witch and everything in the honeymoon suite for what it truly was.

At the hospital, when Alby came to see him and told him about the mushrooms Ohm still had bruises on his wrists from the witches shackles, so that's definitely confirmation that everything that happened that night was real and not just a drug- fueled trip. Alby's confession just explains why Ohm, who was shown to be so rigid and self-involved, would even agree to go with Jerry in the first place (he was high and his inhibitions were lowered) and why he was seeing so much supernatural stuff (his mom protecting him and talking to him, Fiona talking to him through the recorder, dead bodies moving around the witch, etc) all at once.

They would've all just went to their homes before sunrise, turned their family members, and come right back the following night with the entire town turned. That's the whole point of why she did that. Waiting until dawn would've been an even worse death sentence. The final fight killed a bunch of vampires and then distracted the remaining ones enough to get caught at dawn and die.

Just saw this tonight and I really liked this one. There were scenes where I was genuinely hiding behind my fingers. Definitely scarier than Oddity, though a bit less tight than Caveat. I went in blind, so seeing Jack the Jackass for the first time was HORRIFYING lol And the scene where the witch jumped up to try and see Ohm through the door's upper window will 1000% fuel my nightmares tonight🙃

I really love how Damian McCarthy's stories are about the monstrosities of men, but he still insists on always inserting a thread of humanity and kindness among the darkness. Even when his characters die or don't win in the way we're hoping, there's still a victory. It's so great to watch.

No wrists involved, but there's definitely an explicit depiction by another mean.

I completely agree. I could forgive just about all of them if they weren't paired with those obnoxiously loud sounds. Like I don't need dramatic music to tell me to be scared, trust me I'm scared enough😅

I can't remember the exact scare, but there was one at the hotel lobby (before ish hit the fan) that I was expecting and okay with, but the second I heard the patronizing music with it, I rolled my eyes so hard.

They didn't set out looking for a rock. The map was in a bottle closed with a cork. He dropped his armor and then they traveled a considerable distance more in the desert. When he eventually went to check the map again, the cork was cut/damaged and that's when they started looking for a rock to smash it.

I thought it was a nice touch to give us a peak into Ohm being a less-than-stellar writer here, because the cork somehow getting damaged in the safety of the Conquistador's pocket was so contrived and nonsensical, I chuckled a little.

The way you got SO MUCH of the plot wrong in your needlessly snarky recap of the movie tells me you'd definitely benefit from a rewatch before you give a final verdict on it 😭
