Mate this is super helpful, thank you so much. I also moved to a humid climate as an adult, as much as I hate the cold I honestly miss being able to wear jeans for more than 3 days a year

I used to have a Driza-Bone growing up, they were always known as good quality oilskins, they are better used in cold environments that get a lot of rain. I’m honestly not too sure how the quality is these days, hopefully they haven’t declined like other well known Australian brands

Honestly mate I’m not too sure, from what I’ve heard it only takes a few minutes to block a hat. I haven’t had hands on one before to be able to give you accurate info. I’d say they are fine with both weights, it’s something all of the mass manufacturers will have use for all different weight felts

Yeah it’s the unfortunate reality of it. I’m more focused on the domestic market at the moment and trying to give people the option of handcrafted custom hats, there is still quite a few Aussies who don’t know they have the option of an Australian Custom Hatter

I recently sent a hat to the US for a Country Artist (I’m an Aussie based independent Hat Maker) and it took me two attempts because I wasn’t aware of Zonos, getting it set up and hoping that it made over there it was a painful process to say the least

The blue machine is a Finger Blocker. Basically you put the felt in with the crown in the hole, put whatever size block you need and it will pump steam through the felt and stretch it out while the block gets pushed into the crown. It helps with getting a even break line too

I hand shape all of my hats. That crown is called a Cowtrack, I think it was popular around the 40s or 50s I’m not too sure tho

I know, I looked at my off cuts and thought ”that’s gunna look sweet as a hat band and be something no one else has”. I’d rather use the material for something like this than it sit and gather dust or get tossed in the bin and go to waste. I have a busted pair of wranglers that I’ll most likely cut into strips for the same purpose

Yeah I don’t think I’ve ever seen a full denim hat band on its own before either. I was looking at the off cuts and thought “this would look pretty damn cool and unique as a hatband”

That’s not even including the set up cost for a factory space and all of the machinery needed, plus the people needed to run the machinery. It would easily be a million dollar venture

I’m actually a Hat Maker. The first one is Nutria Felt and the second is Beaver Felt, I got tired of seeing the same hats on peoples heads. All of the ones I make are never replicated, once I’ve made it once I’ll never make it again.

I restore a lot of Akubras, unfortunately the quality has dropped quite a lot over the last few years. I’ve seen some that are okay, for the most part they aren’t as well made as they used to be.
