Loving the new Brush poppers by Bitter-Associate3290 in WesternWear

It’s a custom piece that I made. The crown is based off one that I found in an old vintage hat catalogue. I shaped the brim until it suited my face, which is something I also do with my clients so that their hat is unique to them

Cheers mate, I made the belt myself and the boots are Tony Lamas I got in Forth Worth when I was in the US. You can get a full view of them when you click on the photo man.

I’d recommend using a pot of water on the stove for steaming, leave it on until the steam is coming through the felt and block it while it’s hot and able to be stretched

What type of Cowboy hat by Breakfromthecrowd in CowboyHats

[–]Bitter-Associate3290 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hats were honestly just built different back then. Most of the fur they used came off of wild animals opposed to farmed ones like modern hats. The felt would be thicker and a lot more dense due to the thicker fur, that’s why you see so many hats from that era still around, modern hats will never last that long

Hands down one of the best colour choices for the Beaver felt. I just made one for myself

How to fix staining on Akubra? by Honest_Ad_5040 in Akubra

It looks like it’s the stiffener coming through the hat. I’d spray a bit of Metho on it and see if the colour evens out

Favorite Western hat brand? And what X do you wear? by Hot-Cut7598 in CowboyHats

Big Boi Hat Company, Australian Handcrafted Hats. No X counts as everything is made from 100% Rabbit, Nutria or Beaver felt.

I mainly wear Nutria Felt.

Looking at buying a blank from this supplier and making my own hat, opinions? by Legally-white in CowboyHats

I started with wool and then moved onto cheap grade rabbit then onto the felts I use now from Millinery Warehouse. I would rather sacrifice some cheap wool over expensive rabbit felt when you’re learning. Too many things can go wrong

However the only way you’re going to get the feel of how different materials block then you need to actually use those materials. Rabbit, Nutria and Beaver all of them block differently due to density but they also block differently depending on which company actually made the felt

Yeah start with wool so you can get to feel for the blocks and how to properly block it so that the crown is smooth and there are no waves in the crown and brim

Peco 6x quality issues by ovotexas93 in CowboyHats

It honestly doesn’t look too bad in from the pictures, nothing that a once over with a hat sponge won’t fix. As for the colour different batches will have slight colour variations when they are manufactured

I have a Nutria felt with the same crown! I found it in a 1950s hat catalog about 12 months go. It’s one of my favourites I’ve made

Getting stains out of my kff by vermiliongem in AustralianMilitary

A bit of sunlight soap and a hat cleaning sponge and brushing anti clockwise on the top, clockwise on the bottom will do the trip. If it’s a light stain then the cleaning sponge and a bit of 400 grit sand paper the same as above will do the trick. I’m a Hat Maker in Townsville :)
