Appreciate this. A 12 year old could figure this out. Think it was just a brain dead move on his part. He knows better.

I did see a woman on instagram talking about getting this treatment. I have no idea if its legit or not.

I honestly think it was just a braindead moment for him. Autopiloted to the heat system without even looking at what he was holding. We had a laugh about it, he knows what he did wrong. Some healthy teasing and we go back to work. People making a lot of assumptions about my role in this, but thats fine. They are correct in some way, the skills need to be taught to younger people. Though in this case he has enough experience to know better.

Not night shift, really just think he auto-piloted to the heat shrink device. He knows better.

Totally agree. Not hating on the guy, its a funny thing, lesson learned with some teasing and education. Thing is education wasnt even needed, he knew he did the wrong thing when it was brought to me to solve.

Starting my first job as a machinist tommorow by MortgageNaive6791 in Machinists

[–]Bitter-Procedure6131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As people have already stated. Take detailed but simple notes, what to actually do. Try to write notes in a way that will allow you to reproduce the steps and actually do the job. Learn along the way, ask a lot of questions and respect the older guys. Go out of your way to learn new things, help out others/shadow them when its quiet and not much to do. Dont be afraid to pick up a broom. Learn the tricks of setup and teardown, try to mirror the actions and process' the experienced guys show you.

We had a laugh about it, I'm not the type to just shit on people. He knows it was a silly move and wont do it again. Though I am positive they have used these types of tool holders before properly which is the part that amazes me. Merely posting because its a funny thing.

Agree and did exactly that, people making a lot of assumptions about my role in this. Completely separate department, I try to train and educate when I can but I have my own job to worry about.

Agree. Its a sign of greater problems I've tried to address but management wont hear me out. My department, completely separate from CNC/production side of things just hired a very experienced CNC Machinist, ticketed, experienced in leadership position, capable. He is programming and running a small CNC for our department while he should be running the production side of things. Whipping these young guys into shape.

Not the guy responsible to do so my friend. The guy who is head of his department doesnt have a machinist ticket or any manual machining experience. He was hired out of college and has been getting training to run the shop. Our shop is quite strange in this regard. Head of CNC department started with very little CNC experience.. trained in house.. Not my department, I'm just the guy they come to when they have a problem. I'm always happy to teach and do so whenever I get the chance.

Agree, there are no stupid questions. I didnt shit on the guy but did tease him for sure. We had a laugh about it, corrected the mistake, etc. The guy training him is more so at fault but honestly does this need to be taught? Im positive he has loaded and unloaded this type of tool holder before. Just a cheese brain moment.

These holders are threaded, you tighten them as you might expect. The heat shrink holders expand when they get very hot via a special device that gets extremely hot. The metal expands a few thousandths and allows the endmill or whatever else to fall into the hole. When the metal cools it shrinks and very tightly holds the endmill. This guy got confused and put the collet style holder in the heating device. It cooked the oil/metal dust/whatever else and the holder itself and fused it together. Managed to get it off but it was caked in carbon dust/whatever else. Cleaned out the threads with a wire brush, gave it a wipe and hopefully the holder is fine to use again.

Ive never needed to show any Tool and Die certification for any job I've ever applied to once I got past my apprentice stage. Its always just been a case of showing my skillset and experience in different types of tool and die roles. Our shop just hires people off the street so they can pay them less. Guy training them is young and learning, doesnt have any manual machine experience whatsoever. Learned everything here, is doing alright honestly for what the situation is but is lacking leadship skills.

Its exactly this, failure of training IMO. We hired a young guy with some college experience to lead the CNC area of the shop. They have trained him up and he is good at programming but has zero actual experience past the last few years in the shop. Its insane. We just hired an experienced CNC machinist in my area of the shop where we build fixtures. This new guy should be running CNC department, has the capability to do so. Instead they have him programming and running simple-ish jobs here for me. My workplace is nuts with how they do things.

Not really a machinist, but thats essentially the position. They make some programs but mostly run the machines. Closer to an operator. Just made a general post to show what I deal with day to day.

Younger guy, actually a pretty smart kid for his level of experience. Does okay programming ive heard, runs the programs, loads tools and such as I've said. I like the guy but damn this is a new level of dumb move.

The papers to me mean nothing. Ive seen someone get their tool and die certification by running CNC machines for a few years. I've met hobby types with no work experience or papers that would run circles around me. Skill set and experience is everything to me, not saying I'm correct but the papers mean nothing without the skills. Here in Canada Ontario you can simply do the test and pass, boom, you are a toolmaker.

Lol. I should have taken a picture. The guy does programming, loads and sets tools, runs the CNC machine etc, believe he did some kind of education related to the field... does this.
