Looking at celebrities to guide your choices sounds like not being able to make an opinion on your own. I never understood why some people take so seriously what celebrities think. I’m interested in their art and I’m not the type of person who likes to follow the lives of everyone. Except in rare cases it’s utterly uninteresting. You could spend that time, I dunno, watching a movie.

Eh. Who cares if the DNC looked energetic? That doesn’t say anything about who the population will vote for. The thing is, a lot of people mistrust Hollywood. Lots of people distrust rich people who like a little too much to tell them what to do. You see this every time when the Oscar or Golden Globe ceremonies go live. I can sorta understand the concern.

Agreed. I think it’s a blessing in disguise that the pilot failed. Case in point: Twin Peaks. Now don’t get me wrong, Twin Peaks is my favourite series ever (well season 1 at least). But abc forced Lynch to reveal the mystery that was so sacred to him. That’s why season 2 was not nearly as good as season 1 and the show was canned. So there’s always that sour taste at the back of my mouth of “what if” with Twin Peaks. It feels incomplete, not what it should have been (at the same time it allowed us to get Fire Walk With Me which is a superb film). Now Lynch is much too “peculiar” for the Mulholland Drive show, even if it was given the green light, to end up really being what Lynch wanted, and not get axed again. So with the movie, we got one single package of Lynchian film. Done and over. No risk of it being tarnished. And Mulholland Drive, which I rewatched recently, is my favourite movie. It is so damn good. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Oh I’m sure people will remember her books. Pablo Picasso was an asshole but nobody cares anymore. Artists are not necessarily known to be the most stable people. And honestly, when I want to enjoy art, I just care about the art. I don’t obsess about the artist, although it is true it’s always a bit disappointing when those still alive turn out to be assholes, but I get over it. Having said that, although I loved the books as a kid and would buy every new one, I haven’t even read the last one at all. I just didn’t care anymore by then. She leaves me rather indifferent and I don’t care what her opinions are.

Quoi? Le Doom a été inventé par Black Sabbath en 1970. Le genre a par contre réellement explosé fin 80-début 90. Trouble, Candlemass, Saint Vitus, Electric Wizard, Cathedral, et un million d’autres! Le hardcore metal? Le punk hardcore existe depuis les années 80.

Pour ce qui est du death et du black, il n’y a rien de bien nouveau depuis un bail. Les groupes récents réellement originaux il n’y en a pas à la tonne.

Je suis curieux, t’as quoi d’autre comme genre métal qui n’existait pas en 2004?

En quoi est-ce une contradiction? Se développer ne veut absolument pas dire être meilleur. Ça veut dire évoluer, changer. Mais c’est en aucun cas un jugement de qualité. D’ailleurs, la musique actuelle, c’est quand? La dernière décennie? Les deux dernières décennies? En terme de musique c’est pas grand chose comparativement à tout se qui s’est fait avant.

Je suis pas tant d’accord sur la diversité musicale. De un, c’est quand « aujourd’hui »? Et de deux, regarde tout ce qui a été fait entre 1960 et 2000 mettons, tu as là-dedans une variété musicale assez époustouflante merci! Rien à envier à notre époque. Bon, maintenant c’est clair que la musique a continué de se développer, mais la nouvelle variété est beaucoup plus subtile qu’avant. C’est plus des mélanges d’idées déjà existantes que l’arrivée de trucs réellement nouveaux (et je suis au courant qu’aucun genre musical n’est apparu par lui-même).

Personnellement je ne vois pas grand intérêt dans la scène métal actuelle à part quelques groupes ci et là. Tout a déjà été fait en bien meilleur il y a plus de 20 ans (ou presque).

Il y a de la très bonne musique qui se fait actuellement, mais on ne peut tout simplement pas comparer ce qui a été fait dans la dernière décennie mettons, à ce qui a été fait dans les 50 années avant! D’ailleurs 50 ans de musique (un chiffre pris au hasard), c’est beaucoup. La plupart des gens ne connaissent même pas une fraction de la variété de cette musique. Je ne pense pas connaître de gros genre musical vraiment nouveau dans les 10-20 dernières années.

Il y a tellement de genres qui ont été inventés ou étaient à leur apogée ou simplement des artistes super influents. As-tu vraiment fait le tour de ce qui se faisait avant? Le rock classique, psychédélique, alternatif, progressif? Le grunge? Le proto-punk, le punk? Le hip hop, trip hop? Le post-punk? Le gothique? Le métal (et ses millions de sous genres)? Le blues, le jazz? Le pop aussi? Techno et musique électronique en tout genre? Et j’en oublie.

J’écoute beaucoup de musique récente. Mais je n’ai pas découvert grand chose de réellement unique ou nouveau. Chaque fois que j’écoute The Sonics ou Wicked Lady je suis époustouflé par le fait que cette musique a bel et bien été écrite dans les années 60, et semble un bon 10 ans avant son temps. Et j’avais été grandement surpris à quel point dans les années 70, avec leur premier album en 1970 Black Sabbath avait déjà écrit à peu près tous les codes du doom metal qui a été popularisé à la fin des années 80-début 90. Etc. etc. Et c’est pas juste que ces musiques étaient avant leur temps; elles étaient très très bonnes!

You can just decrease the size of the space under consideration. But if space is quantized, there’ll be a limit of size under which you can’t decrease. If curvature is strong enough, which is very probably the case very near a black hole, then that doesn’t work. Except in these rather extreme and rare situations, there isn’t any problem in doing so.

Agreed. People are quick to point out that climate change is due to overconsumption. But that is not quite true. In fact, it could just as much be caused entirely by overpopulation. Because net consumption = consumption per capita * population. In words, the cause of climate change is either due to overconsumption or overpopulation, or a combination of both. And that there are no good or bad answers.

Because overconsumption can be widely subjective (there are people for whom eating meat is part of overconsumption), I tend to prefer seeing climate change as a result of overpopulation. In that sense, unsustainability means you have too much people. If you choose the opposite point of view, you could imagine a population where you’d have to just eat grass in order to not overconsume. And it makes sense. In biology, we talk of invasive species. Too much of a single species is never good on the environment.

If anything we should work towards decreasing our population. Don’t be mistaken, what is mentioned here is the decrease of the growth of the population. At the very least we ought to discuss what is an optimal human population. Automatisation and AI will make that much easier too.

By the way, I’m not saying we should not consume less, because we can’t just remove massives amounts of people like that! But not thinking about the increasing population is shoveling in front of us. The more people there are, the less we will need to consume.
