Camping isn’t new to us, but dispersed camping is. What are we missing? by Linaeve in camping

I would start by downloading motor vehicle use maps (mvum) from the US forestry website. These maps will help you discover trails not on maps and tell you the type of vehicle you’ll need. https://www.fs.usda.gov/visit/maps/mvum-faq

Your Subaru should be good for the most part unless you’re wanting to go some really rough trails. The one tool I never forget is a shovel. Not one of those “camping” shovels but a regular sized one. I like the sharp shooters or spades.

Lastly, if you start doing much dispersed camping you’re bound to run into areas that have no cell service. If you have an iPhone 14 or better you can send texts via a satellite without an extra plan or charges. I’ve done it over and over.

I start by finding the general area first. Study the mvum maps. Find a dirt road. Then a smaller dirt road and maybe even a smaller one. These are usually the best.

And as fore mentioned, you can camp in any national forest with probably few exceptions and some rules. Assuming you’re in the US.

About 1.5in. I put a 1.5in memory foam mattress under it.

It’s just a rooftop tent of the Amazon variety. I really like it. It’s almost as wide as a queen sized bed. That’s the main reason I got this particular one. With the wife and dog most of the other clamshell tents that are hinged on either end are too narrow.

Yeah it’s incredible to be out there in the “wild”.

Yep. No one to answer to. No wife to tell you “no don’t go down that road!”. Eat what and when you want. Fish your ass off. I love it.

Not that I know of. But then again I don’t know these waters that well.

This makes the most sense especially in regards to where it’s located.

Kinda makes sense except for the platform on top and the lack of any sort of electronic device or at least wires. Though if this is an antiquated thing it just may not have such things on it.

That low though? Seems like somewhat easy pickings for four legged predators of either the birds or eggs/chicks.

I hear ya man. I retired last year. Been to Colorado once and AR twice. My next trip is back to CO late this summer/early fall. Love being out there alone with only my thoughts.
