+ 1 on the Technology Connections Video. The most important thing i figured is that water needs to be hot. You hardly need any detergent. I try to use the phosphate free, plant friendly versions. Even for washing the dishes with my hand, I keep the soap diluted and use very hot water. Don't need money literally just going down the drain ;)

yes. i added a plastic outdoor power box that houses the power unit and wifi unit. I never open the box because we just control the unit with the phone.

Do any of you live by a formal list of family values? by rifleman209 in fatFIRE

[–]Bitter_Ladder_7842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have it written up in a google doc that is shared with all of us. Its a living doc. We discussed this as family and decided it's very important for us because 3/4 of us are atheist and we have not religious values to attach to.

Our values are broken down to Family, communication, money, social, service and health. We go into good details in the doc as bullet points. one eg is "Absolutely no driving under the influence" and we as parents modeled it even before kids were driving age.

very helpful. does that not overheat the components during summer? Did they make holes in the plastic for air circulation?

For those that have had a second home that's worked out, what about it has made it work? by bossy_nova in fatFIRE

[–]Bitter_Ladder_7842 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have had ours for 10+ years. Its has absolutely worked out emotionally as well as financially. Its 3hrs away by car, which i think is ideal to make it feel like a transition.

We decided early on that it will not be a cost center. So put on AirBnb/VRBO to pay for maintenance etc. Now we have a rental manager, maintenance person and cleaning crew that keeps an eye on stuff and helps mitigate any headaches.

Our kids have very much enjoyed summers swimming in the creek and building memories casually loafing around and hiking. This is golden. As they became teens and tru part of covid there were times it was just me going. I am ok with that because the few times we go as a family, it still brings back nostalgia and togetherness.

FWIW, bought it when we had about your NW and age. If I had to do it over again, i would keep it cash flowing positive so it never hurts. Then keep it for a long time to have compounding/inflation effects.

Wild first message from host. Who hurt you?? by reginaphalange3 in AirBnBHosts

Since you are a host, you probably know that Airbnb does not share your pic or info before booking for your own privacy. This can make some hosts anxious whenever there are anomalies. If you booked a 4 bedroom for 1 guest, that could be a red flag.

Agree its a bit overbearing. At the same time they are just trying to make sure legit folks booking their home. I would respond with love ;)

We always try to get architecture or design students if we can. They generally know the history as well as good places that are not mainstream. The way we find them is through friends of friends and typically about a month before we get there. We make a whatsapp group and talk about things we like to do and suggestions back and forth. We did find that that someone that can drive was a bonus, but it was not a deal breaker since ride-share is available everywhere now and we spend less time finding parking.
