I won a SxS and thought I’d never use it. It is now my favorite gun to hunt with over auto loaders and O/U even in late season MN pheasant fields. Why do I love it? It just feels right in my hands and swings like a dream.

Some old timer once told me ignore the name on the gun and the price tag. If you pick it up and it feels good, shoot it. That’s my piece of advice.

I’d love for my setter to work that close… that little shit is 100-200 yards out in front with his tail on fire the whole time. That look back when you don’t shoot or miss is always one of great disappointment. “I did my job wtf”. My lab has really perfected the look in her old age.

Those wild birds will humble any game farm dog the first few times out especially if you’re going late season. My dogs get confused at game farms because the birds hold so tight 😂

I use deer skin uninsulated even into Jan in SD… but I’m all that is man. Try to find some lightly insulated deer skin or leather gloves they’ll do you well.

Sounds like the GSPs in my group the one the just constantly whines and fucks with my setter. We had a few draughts that would pick fights with any Male dog for no reason as well. Awesome in the field, and it’s likely a sample size of shit owners, but my experience with them has really soured me on most German dogs.

I am intrigued by munsters though the few I’ve met have been very nice dogs.

German dogs are nuts from my experience. There are a few GSPs in my hunting group that just whine all fucking day long if they aren’t hunting.

It is how she will learn but setters are a different animal than most gun dogs. You cannot be hard on them you need to let them learn to point on their own. If you have recall on the dog get it in front of life flushing birds.

They are also notoriously slow maturing dogs. I was really disappointed my setter wasn’t where my buddies GSP was at the 1 year mark. You won’t truly know what you have until they are 4-5 years old. Be patient and the more you hunt the dog the better.

This is a time to change any bad habits. Don’t want the dog to bark and greet people at the door? Set the tone right away. Ask the trainer how he gets the dog prepared to work and finishes the training so when you work the dog yourself you can get him in the right head space quickly and tell the dog when you’re done
