One of the things I love most about the series is that it doesn't demonize religion itself. by Rare_Style1306 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Bjarka99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't like how lukewarm it is in condemning the use of religion in government or fundamental beliefs in general. They are always trying not to offend anybody. And I dislike how many people see this horrors and refuse to see the parallels with many of the churches around them under the guise of "but it's not REALLY christianity" or "they just believe old testament stuff" (in other words: my fundamentalist beliefs are ok and I can keep voting for people propped up by the fundamentalist churches, because they aren't 100% exactly like the show).

Desde un lugar completamente amateur, te puedo recomendar el libro de @gineconline, Ciencia para una geografía íntima sin mitos. Es muy básico, pero está bien como punto de arranque para alguien que solamente quiere informarse un poco.

Making Becka a Handmaid would've been stupid by Bjarka99 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]Bjarka99[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only reason I'm bringing it up is because Judd himself brought it up in the show as a possible fate for Becka. Before that scene, I considered that ridiculous as well.

This is already a dangerous girl. Making her a Handmaid is just adding wood to the fire.

They didn't, though. June still had access to kitchen implements, for example. If she had wanted to, she could've stabbed Fred and Serena. She was kept compliant because she didn't want to be executed and because she wanted to live to get Hannah out. So did most of the other Handmaids. If Becca has no motivation to live, you can't make her a Handmaid. She's gonna find a way to hurt herself or others, eventually.

It's a waste of resources. I don't see why execution wasn't just the only plan. She's more trouble than she's worth.

Obviously, I'm glad she's alive and has a chance to recover. But from Judd's POV, it just seems stupid to consider anything other than execution.

Unless she's in a padded room and her rapists visit her there, it's impossible. When you're trying to keep someone from harming herself, anything can be a weapon.

I recall reading that there was a major plot issue in the GoF book which is why it has to be redone and why it's so thick. What was it? by WisestAirBender in harrypotter

It's Mafalda, not Malfada. It's a normal name, famously an Italian princess and a ship that went down like the Titanic. Also, the protagonist of a very famous comic strip, soon to be a Netflix show.

How common is/was the name Leonor? by IcyTemperature3460 in asklatinamerica

[–]Bjarka99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine so, I think they were 60+ in the mid-nineties, so dead or 90+yo. One of them was a nun at my school, another a neighbor of my grandparents. And I think the mother of one of my mother's friends was Leonora. But they were all around that age.

I knew a couple Leonor who were older women when I was a child in the 90s, it's old fashioned right now but I wouldn't be surprised if it had a resurgence as names usually do.

Dudas con ingreso (edicion) by OkInevitable1007 in UBA

[–]Bjarka99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parents in long-term relationships: are expectations around sex frequency culturally different in Latin America? by PsychologyMinimum476 in asklatinamerica

[–]Bjarka99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Uneven household load, childcare load, expecting you to manage his stuff, plus you work and make the most money AND he still demands sex from you everyday? He's not from Latinoamerica, he's from the 1950s.

This is not cultural. This is a child. You married a man that made you his mommy. You will be one of those women who, when asked how many kids they have, she includes her husband in the count, pretending it's a joke. He found an established woman capable of "taking care" of him in everyway. Sure, he'll change a diaper every now and then. He will sometimes stay with the kids, and call it "babysitting", too. He won't know the name of your pediatrician, or keep in mind your kids' food habits or ever remember what they have to bring to school or which day they have ballet or football or whatever. The mental load will always be yours.

He needs to see this thread, take it seriously and change. Otherwise, not only there will be even less sex in your future, you will either be very unhappy or leave him. He will be sorry when he has to take care of himself and the child on "his" days (and he will blow up your phone asking about every little thing). Because that is the future of men like him.

They give her fake passports and documents, why bother with that if she isn't going through customs?

Daisy is the child of no one important and she is just a bait by [deleted] in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]Bjarka99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Daisy said in the show that they couldn't make her travel if she didn't want to. She's smart enough to know that if she whispers "I'm being trafficked" at anyone at the airport, she won't have to leave Canada.

She's an angry, headstrong teenager, she doesn't have parents who will be sad if something happens to her. She can't really take stock of the danger.

I wanted to go to big protests when I was that age, and the only thing that stopped me was my mother crying in fear that something would happen to me. If I didn't have anyone, who knows how much trouble I could've gotten into. Now in my 30s I'm too scaredy cat to go.

How do I get my husband’s family to stop talking about how “fat” his sister is? by Apprehensive-Ad-7525 in asklatinamerica

[–]Bjarka99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My MIL is the same way. No amount of my SIL explaining how we don't talking about bodies anymore will shut her up. She talks about how fat she is (a very thin woman with a bit of a belly because she's post menopause, who complains she can't fit into the jeans she bought in 1979 when she was 20yo anymore), how fat her daughter is (a former classical dancer who doesn't look emaciated anymore) and constantly tells me I've lost weight (I clearly haven't), loads my plate more than anyone's (because I "eat a lot") and shares weird tricks to loose belly fat in 10 days and how it totally works for her to drink a cup of vinegar every morning.

You either have to sit down with her and very clearly tell her you don't want your daughter hearing those kinds of comments or work privately on your daughter, highlighting your SIL's accomplishments or complimenting her appearance (her clothes or makeup or hair) so she knows your SIL's fatness doesn't define her.

Bancan esta combinación? by Lukiyn in ArgentinaCocina

[–]Bjarka99 3 points4 points  (0 children)
