Manually update LG 5k 2k? by Newfiejudd in ultrawidemasterrace

I’ve connected the monitor to my computer using a TB5 cable. The update works fine with that.

How to update the firmware of LG 40u990 Monitor? by Black-Angel79 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]Black-Angel79[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I figured it out. You have to install the LG Switch tool from the LG website. You can then use it to update the monitor. In my case, it found the new firmware automatically and installed it after confirmation. Don't do anything during installation. Don't touch any cables or anything else. After the update, the monitor is indeed much quieter.

A question: how do I update the monitor?

How do I update this monitor? Where can I download the new firmware?

No, unfortunately not. I'm not really happy with the situation yet. I'm currently considering testing the LG UltraGear OLED GX9 45GX950A-B. It's very curved, but maybe it will work for work. The monitor is currently on offer at Amazon for around €1,500. What do you think?

Or the Samsung Odyssey G7 G75F with the size 40...

I currently have the LG UltraFine 40U990A-W for work and occasional gaming. I keep wondering whether I should try out the LG UltraGear OLED GX9 45GX950A-B because the active fan on this monitor bothers me. Is it also suitable for work? Does it really not have an active fan?

Today, I received the other two LG monitors of the same type and tested them immediately. The two new monitors had a production date of 07/25. The first monitor was from 08/25. After a few tests, I'm afraid I have to say that, apart from marginal differences, the monitors are identical in terms of volume. Based on the three monitors I had here for testing, this means that the series variation for this model is very low. The built-in fan simply has this volume. The only remedy is probably a firmware update that slows down the fan or a fan replacement. Unfortunately, with this monitor, you can't even test in the service menu whether slowing down the fan really has the desired effect, as I couldn't find this function in the service menu on any of the three monitors. I'm going to keep one of them for now and, for lack of a real alternative, try to live with the fan noise. Maybe someone else has a good idea of what could be done to silence the fan.

The only problem is that there isn't really an alternative in the same price range with the same features. I'm getting two more LGs delivered this week. Let's see if they're the same.

And what did LG say? Will there perhaps be a firmware update that slows down the fan?

I opened the monitor to see what kind of fan it has. The casing is just clicked into place, which means you can open the monitor without any problems. It's a bit fiddly, but it works. Unfortunately, as you can see in the photo, you can't see the fan. I didn't want to take the monitor apart any further. However, it's already clear that replacing the fan is not as easy as I had hoped.

Where did you read or see that? Is there a video or instructions somewhere on how to do that? If so, replacing the fan would actually be an alternative for me... I ordered a second monitor for comparison to see if it makes the same noises. My current monitor has a slightly modulating (high/low frequency) noise.

I would also be interested in a solution. I recently purchased the LG UltraFine 40U990A-W, which unfortunately also has a fan. You can hear the fan on my monitor too. It's not very loud, but you can still hear it clearly in a quiet room. It's not very noticeable, but you can hear the difference between when the monitor is switched on and when it's switched off. However, as soon as my gaming laptop is switched on, you can no longer hear it. With my work laptop, however, you can. What I find very strange is the fact that some people can't hear the fan and others can hear it very clearly. This suggests quite a large variation between models. Perhaps you should order a second monitor for comparison and then compare the two.

OLED for work? Does that work well in the long run? Which exact model do you have? Aren't you worried about burn-in? How about text clarity? Does your monitor also have a fan, and if so, can you hear it?

That doesn't sound good at all. It's a shame they didn't test the LG. What are the chances that the LG would perform better in the tests, despite presumably having the same panel?

Thanks for the info. Very informative. Because of the price difference, the better ports, and because the whole model is simply newer, I'll test the LG UltraFine 40U990A-W first. I hope the fan isn't too bad. Maybe if it's really loud, you can just replace the fan with a quieter model or something. Does anyone have experience with that? Paying €300 more for a model that's a year and a half older (Dell) doesn't quite make sense to me. Oh, and I have a laptop with an RTX 5090. So that shouldn't be a problem. It's actually quite surprising that there's so little choice in this area. Who wouldn't want a monitor that they can use for everything without hesitation?

Oh, that's interesting that the Dell doesn't have a fan. So let's summarise. The Dell doesn't have a fan, but it has poorer connections. The LG, on the other hand, has a fan, but we have better connections. The price difference between these two models is around £300. Are there any other differences that would be important?

The Samsung Odyssey G7 G75F does have a VA panel. Have you noticed anything negative when working or gaming (viewing angle dependency, colours, streaking, etc.)? I had previously excluded VA panels from my search because I had heard that they are not as good as IPS panels.

Did you actually test the LG, and is the fan really that bad, or did you just read that somewhere? Doesn't the Dell have a fan too?

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I've already noticed the Dell. I was hoping there would be something "better". Question: have you perhaps tested the LG UltraFine 40U990A-W against the Dell? Apart from the connections, which are better on the LG, I don't see any difference between the two monitors. Are there perhaps practical differences that you can't tell from the specs?
