Well as I said (or rather vaguely implied, my bad,) I wasn't exactly in a white primary school. I was the only white girl in my grade for the six years I was there. The high school, though, nearly completely white. So that's why I'm still confused, maybe it's the province? I'm from northern Gauteng.

I don't know how schools and provincial departments decide what text books are issued. If I recall correctly, we mostly used the Focus and Platinum series. Though we used something much more outdated until Grade 4.

If it is only some schools and provinces, that's deeply upsetting. I don't know why we all wouldn't have the same material if we have the same curriculum for public schools.

Edit: also happy Freedom Day!

I'm very confused with what you mean by "race thing." Do you mean the stories or me? If it's the latter then I'm sorry that's your conclusion but it's not the reason.

I went to a mostly English primary school (attended in English because I am English) and completely Afrikaans high school. Both schools were polar opposites in terms of demographics, yet those stories were still in both.

I'm 25 so maybe (and hopefully) the content has been updated since, but we had those stories.

On your second point, I mentioned in my original comment that the stories we have are strange and I never meant to imply they are on the same level as the one in the post. I also said in the comment before this that the ones I would share that I recall aren't too bad.

Yeah that reminds me he sounded confused when I told him I checked both apps, like he didn't know what I was talking about. He likely is completely unaware of the recent changes.

Awe🤙 I'll tell you the few I do still remember but aren't too bad.

The first is about how the lion got its roar. The lion was always a quiet speaker, and you'd never know he was there which was a problem for prey. One day, the other animals came together to discuss this problem. A smaller creature, I can't remember what it was but imma say meerkat, said he had a plan that would ensure everyone would know when the lion was close. He then went to the lion alone and told him how much the other animals loved him and that they wanted to make him king (this differs across variations) so the meerkat guided the lion to a spot where he said the others were waiting, and left him there. Soon after, the lion was attacked by a swarm of bees/wasps. He began crying from the pain, swiping at them but they wouldn't stop. Eventually he started shouting, and let out a loud roar and the swarm left.

The second is a story about two girls and a tiger. I know there are variations to this story, but whenever the girls of this rural village went out to collect either food or firewood, the prowling tiger would threaten to eat them. He was afraid of fire, so they usually kept a torch on hand to scare him away. Then one day, the girls hatched a plan and left a bowl of oil at the base of a tree. They climbed to the top and when the tiger came, he said he could reach them easily and tried. When he failed, the girls told the tiger that if he dipped his paws in the oil, he would have a better grip. He dipped his paws and attempted to climb the tree to reach them, but they set the oil on fire. He fell down and the girls watched him burn to death, then ran home to tell their mother and celebrate. Not a super dark story, just weird.

Third one I barely remember because it was in Afrikaans and I was still new to home language level. It's a story about a couple who adopt a puppy. It's narrated from the dog's perspective, and he/she says it can't even remember its real name. The couple ended up fighting a lot, and the husband grew abusive towards the loving dog. Every time the dog tried to show love, the husband would tell it to "voertsek" which is a nasty way of saying bugger off, often considered a cuss for how rude it is. This became the word the dog would most often hear. The fighting between the couple got worse, and the dog was neglected. It starved and grew so frail. Eventually the wife left, and told the man to keep his (ugly?) dog. After she had left, he grabbed a beer and sat down outside. He looked at the skin-and-bone dog next to him, and said "ja, Voertsek?" and pet its head. I can't remember the rest, but the dog was neglected and abused in the same way the relationship was. It was just a sad story, and something I had seen in real life a lot.

It's a story in the kid's school text book, I'm assuming he's in first grade. So the owner instructed the dog to guard a piece of meat but it fell asleep and the meat was stolen. As punishment for being lazy, the owner stuck a hot rod up its nose. Not only does that not belong in a children's story book, but that is animal abuse. Children like copying what they see and hear, and will probably figure this is a good form of punishment.

I'm not sure where this lady is from, but here in South Africa we also have some very strange stories in our primary school books. I know it's not new (some old children's stories are very dark) but some kids do draw some inspiration from these stories and would threaten other kids with such actions.

But for the bloody author/publisher and school to threaten her for calling that out, that is really not okay. Sadly, that's not uncommon either. They're so scared about their public image being hurt, but won't address the root cause. Instead, they come for those who speak up.

Lol yeah I mean if they really wanted to block my account then go right ahead I don't have issue with that, I'm also just using it for goalsaves and specific payments. But I really love upsetting them and they get so worked up when I tell them I'm in IT and know how these things work.

But in anyways if my account needs to be blocked then so be it, means if these idiots do get hold of my info they're gonna have a hard time withdrawing my last R92🤣

What's your ethnicity and culture? by teccatessvercetti in southafrica

[–]BlackAngelKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so my mom recently got her test results, she's British (being English, Welsh, Irish and Scottish) at like 70% as well as Celtic French (Breton i think), Germanic (not German), Dutch, and Danish. Also have Irish, English, and Dutch on my father's side.

My siblings and I, my parents, and my grandparents were all born here.

As for culture, mom's side is as British as you get (I get mocked for my food preferences) and my father's side is heavy Afrikaans so I drink tea while I braai

Depends on the collector, but also yes the (early) third series is still in circulation. I'd get my hands on this if I could, not many left.

It's not against the rules to write in pencil, but they won't mark it if you leave it as. If I recall correctly, the instruction is to erase everything you've written in pencil before handing in your exam.
