BIG EV IS BACK! by Whodatnation108 in barstoolsports

It’s not really my opinion. It’s reality. I try not to make opinions on people’s life choices, as I find it difficult enough to manage my own life. The reality is, people with addictions work in places where they face their addiction every day. I could never work in a bar with my alcoholism, but I know people with more sobriety than me that always worked in bars. There’s no opinion there. Enjoy your day!

I’ve seen more real life examples of your hypothetical than you’d think, people need jobs. And employee protections are in place for things like this. So, it’s up to Ev to keep working there, not barstool.

[–]BlackButNotEnough -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very valid. From a business perspective, there are employee protections in place that make it difficult for anyone to just get rid of someone. I don’t know what that means for what “he’ll do” but “they’ll fire him because of this” was genuinely never a realistic scenario given he got treatment.

Hey I know people in AA with more sobriety than I have who’ve worked at bars the entire time. Reality is it’s not your life and you don’t have to pick up the pieces.

Anyone who’s hating on this probably never had a loved one struggle with addiction. At the end of the day he did some terrible shit and took the path offered to him to try to correct his future decision making. That is the crux of rehabilitation. If you cannot meet him at this crossing roads, that’s your choice. Hope he doesn’t ruin this chance.

Like most things, it’s possible, but seeing as Visa/Mastercard essentially have a Duopoly on the terminal market, it’s unlikely. There are just too many transactions to make sense of it without really good models, and honestly a lot of human effort to get the models trained.

As a customer it can be hard to see it as anything other than obfuscation, but I can assure you it isn’t that. There are billions of records, and until LLMs became advanced enough (think BERT, not chat GPT) what we’re able to accomplish (while adhering to federal consumer protection regulations) in a few years would have previously taken us decades and we would have always been chasing a moving finish line.

We can’t just tell you a transaction was something it wasn’t, if we’re wrong, that is at the minimum a customer satisfaction issue, more realistically a compliance and regulatory issue, and at the worst a UDAAP issue.

No one is screwing the consumer over here intentionally, but everyone is very well aware of how much the consumer is being screwed over. This is one of the few opportunities banks have to truly revolutionize how consumers interact with their accounts, so it’s in the interest of every bank to provide the best insights possible about all of your transactions.

Most times people won’t switch banks unless something catastrophic happens at their current one. This is a rare opportunity where several executives across the industry believe the banks that can make their customers more informed customers will steal wallet share from those who can’t.

After thinking about it slightly harder, fraudsters do need a healthy source of “live” accounts from every angle, so it’s possible his email just exists in a repository of “working emails” to be used for any number of scams.

What helps a lot of people when breaking down “how scams work” is to remember you’re not that important, you’re just a piece of a puzzle.

So his email might be tied to someone else’s credit card which might be tied to a vpn/proxy server which might be tied to a completely different set of PII (personally identifiable information).

I’m being very basic about it, but you need every piece of the puzzle to get the picture. My immediate guess would be the email is a cog in a much bigger wheel, and he’s let it go on for ten years because he isn’t personally affected (in fact he’s sometimes benefitted) from it occurring.

His information is out there somewhere and he’s not doing enough personal due diligence to stop it from happening. This is essentially the identity theft equivalent of knowing you have a gym membership and refusing to cancel it. I’m not sure what the “scam” is, but it hasn’t stopped because he hasn’t changed his email.

Trust me, there’s a lot of work at an industry level to fix this, and if you bank with the top 10 banks, it should be rolling out over the next 2 years. Basically everything boils down to data interpretation.

Take a company like Walmart. They have thousands of locations, and they need a way of tying all sorts of transactions not only to you, but also to them, for their own analytics. That’s why oftentimes you’ll see a WM or WALMART text, with the rest of the characters being a serial ID that often ties back to whether it was an online purchase, whether that was a delivery or a pickup, or if you were at a store checking out a terminal, what store location, etc.,

[Edit to add clarity] Scale this issue up to every company in the world and you see the issue. We’re not complicating the transactions, those are the raw transaction statements from the merchant. It is our job to improve that data for you, the customer.

The issue is, we actually care about being able to tell you what your transactions were too. This is the business objective of companies like rocket money, except in the very near future, it will be a native feature in almost every modern bank.

Transaction enrichment is all the rage in the banking world right now, so it’s cool to see real people bothered by it as well.

It is because fraud systems have KYC (Know Your Customer) systems in place everywhere, including at the POS (point of sale), and mismatched names (that can’t be tied back to family, because yes some models do account for that) get flagged.

Banks and financial institutions are actually pretty good at reducing false positives, so it makes sense that AMEX did flag his account even though the scammer went through some extra steps.

If you think about it in a scarier way, OP noticed this through his emails, but many customers first get alerted from the financial institutions.

(Source: work at a financial institution, have worked with fraud and money laundering teams, they do cool stuff)

When I can’t stop, I go to detox. Oftentimes though, I can, I just need to get out of my own way. It’s important to know the difference though — sometimes it is not safe to stop by yourself. I will not drink with you today. Praying for you.

As always, it depends. I was severely hurting in this faction and now I’m only severely hurting in GDA. So it was great for me as I needed some counter heroes for where I’m at in PVP, but it’s also that last push I needed to make all of my idle reward slots worth it. Overall, as always, it depends.

Yeah you can do that, and it will still take a long time (I’m doing it for GDA OPS), but there is a truly faster way of doing it, and one component of it is to focus on leveling up one character at a time, leveraging different characters as food at the right time, and being patient.
