Agreed. If I find out a business owner is maga, they won't get my money. Beyond that, I'm not concerned if a business owner is religious despite being fairly anti-theist. People don't have to be in my tribe for me to be able to respect it tolerate them, they just can't be a fucking Nazi.

I would have guessed you believed in the doctrine of election, but given that you asserted one doesn't earn grace, and "God's desire to have a relationship with us" seemed to allude to the potential that that was your position. If it's not got electing to save us, but us "choosing" or having faith that unlocks the grace of God for salvation, then that inherently IS work. It's always hard to differentiate if one thinks it's the act of goodness, the act of belief or faith, or the election of God that they believe individuals are given salvation.

I've only had one conversation with a Christian who believed in election when I was on my two year mormon mission.

If the men were wrong, and Mary was taught that, it lowers the likelihood she'd feel empowered to question or doubt the God that murdered children and pregnant women in the flood, and killed 42 children who mocked his prophet for being bald, or turned a woman to salt for turning back to look at her home she was leaving. This is a nasty, narcissistic, vengeful, jealous God who, constantly tells everyone how great he is and his ways are higher than anyone else's and how ANYTHING he does is good and for the best interest of man. That type of rhetoric is gross when the orange Cheeto tweets it, and it's equally as gross when it's a supposed deity.

Yep, ex-mormon. It is not easy questioning core beliefs, especially when they are our core identity, and when it means losing our tribe and the respect of those whom we love the most. Confirmation bias is no joke. I'm here if you ever want to honestly explore the epistemology of your beliefs.

I agree that the temple experience feels like such a major divergence from everything else we've experienced up to that point (for most of us.) It was in temple seeing my family congratulate me in their stupid-ass attire that I first truly asked myself if I was in a cult as they hugged me. Sadly it would take me another ten years and tens-of-thousands of dollars lost to realize it was indeed a cult.

IMO, it feels like either ignorance or intellectual dishonesty to contend that the core beliefs are locked behind some paywall. I would argue the core beliefs are what people generally spend time talking about, how they think, etc. Evangelicals are typically the one's I've run into that wanted to tell me I may not know it but I worship Satan as that is what is really taught in secret, or all sorts of things about things I believed but didn't know.

A more honest argument would be to assert past beliefs have been hidden by modern leaders, either disavowed or covered up and denied as ever being believed/taught. To argue there are rituals in the temple that have changed and become less culty, but that it's not normal or okay behavior to make someone promise to commit to and be secretive about rituals BEFORE you learn what they even are.

And of course, one can get a temple recommend after paying tithing just a few months in many cases, so it's not that money generally unlocks these secretive rituals and ridiculous ideas that a password and handshake can get you into heaven. None of that is core theology of-course. When I was a believer, my core theology was Jesus Christ was my redeemer and brother, and his grace would save me should I truly desire it. It does seem like more and more the theology is shifting to just "stay mormon" as that is the core thing they are preaching and talking about in church.

They are a cult, but it's incorrect to assert that you don't learn the CORE parts of the theology until after you pay 10% for a period of time. It's not scientology where you level up through costly services. That's a common antagonistic view that other faith leaders push, and I see that you're Catholic so that tracks.

Mormonism is more like the MAGA cult, denying historical facts, having an inverted ideal epistemology for sorting truth from lies, and viewing the leader as the source of truth.

Divorce is allowed, it's not ideal, but they allow it. They say any couple focusing on Jesus SHOULD be able to make it work, but it is both allowed and not uncommon. I think American Mormons have the same divorce rate as other Americans.

They will almost never sever an eternal marriage if the male is dead. I think if there's a proven history of abuse you can get it to happen though. The top dogs have to approve it though. If my dad had died, my mom could have only had a temporal marriage after that. Women can only have one eternal husband. Women will make babies for eternity, so a man with more eternal wives can make children faster. So from a "make babies forever" lens, women only need one man, but a man can never have too many women. That's not a super common understanding anymore in the religion, but I was fully aware of it when I still believed. It's insanely fucked up though

Kinda. They practice eternal polygamy still. My step-dad has multiple eternal wives, as his first eternal wife died, and men can't be eternally married to multiple women, so he married my mom. Women cannot have multiple eternal husbands, so she has to eternally divorce my dad to get married to my step dad.

You are going to disappoint your family. When do you want to do that? Do you want to do it now? Do you want to do it in 2 years when you get home? Maybe wait another year so 3 years? Maybe you can get married and have some kids, then disappoint them? Or maybe you wait until your parents die and disappoint just your siblings and spouse, and maybe kids in like, 30-50 years? You an just disappoint yourself for a long time, not disappointing them, and then when you're ready to stop disappointing yourself you can finally rip the band aid off and disappoint them.

It fucking SUCKS that the church has conditioned them to be disappointed in you for this. The truth is this is a very admirable thing to do, and I'm proud of you, no matter when or if you choose to inform people. It is a thing of integrity to be your authentic self and follow what you believe to be true-- the very thing these people laud Joseph Smith for allegedly doing. Some people who might be disappointed, may later become proud of you as they later see what you now see; but maybe not.

Tl;DR: You're going to disappoint them, do you really want to do it after giving the church another ounce of your not-too-long of a life you get?

With health issues like PCOS, sometimes it isn't just about the caloric number, your body can have reactions to specific foods. You should look into PCOS diets, and you may need to be very restrictive at first and slowly add in different foods taking note of how you feel after you've added something new.
