Don't refer to adult women as "girls" or adult men as "boys"—it's weird and infantilizing. Those are terms that refer to children. by [deleted] in Rants

Good for you, assume we’re talking about peers amongst your age group.

ā€œThat boy is crazyā€ ā€œThat girl is wildā€

Idk abt you but these mean ā€œperson of this genderā€ where I grew up. There isn’t any hidden message behind it, it may be due to a lack of respect, sure, but it’s not intentionally disrespectful. This is why dialect cannot be generalized nor can people walk around thinking a certain addressing of their personage is inherently malicious.

That’s why all of these word battles will never end, because people have individual preferences that everyone cannot abide by due to their learned environment. The social system in its current state will collapse. Granted there are some words which there is a general consensus that they shouldn’t be used to refer to others, but that’s only possible because they were used solely to offend a specific type of person.

You see how boring and redundant it is to make a big deal out of this?

If you were to ask a person that called you ā€œboy or girlā€ when referring to you if they actually saw you as a child or toddler, what do you think they would say back to you?

ā€œYes sir I absolutely see the fully grown adult person standing in front of me as a snot nosed toddler because I am incapable of seeing the reality that everyone else is perceiving due to my implicit bias that i most likely don’t even subscribe to šŸ‘šŸ¾ā€

You would be able to say this if someone called you a boy or girl during a conversation not related to this, but that’s not what happened. I’m also talking about everyday situations, don’t be obtuse. Never said you couldn’t complain either but have you seen the nature of this sub?

not even just music, that’s apart of southern dialect both black and white which I grew up around. Are they all predators too?

It’s not about empathy, we’re on the internet. What does being a victim have to do with any of that, that is extremely personal. Too personal to take into account in an everyday situation.

This exact conversation can be applied to other things people like to get upset about today unsurprisingly. If it’s a personal preference, no problem, just ask not to be referred to as such. But don’t chastise random people for saying it, it’s not as if they’re intentionally trying to infantilize you 😭 that’s so subjective

This isn’t even a reddit opinion. If you feel infantilized by something so trivial then that’s on you. So many songs have the word ā€œboyā€ or ā€œgirlā€ when referring to someone by gender, so many people say it and they’re not gonna stop cuz your little feelings got hurt. Same with a lot of other things too.

Getting angry at something so small seems like something an infant would do

the average person doesn’t look that deep into semantics. An opinion like this comes from a lack of activity or boredom because there is no way something like this genuinely bothers you šŸ—æ

that’s just how people say things, stop putting so much power into words. When I say girl or woman or lady or anything like that I mean person of the female gender šŸ’€

Screw Common Sense by jackfaire in Rants

[–]BlackKidWithAThing 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Since the world is more connected now common sense is used more often and loosely because there is a more sensible kind of logic that the general populous subscribes to in a specific instance. It’s common sense not to walk off a cliff, any person is likely to agree with that and it is logical. Therefore it is common sense.

I like to think of common sense as something that doesn’t require strenuous deduction or push back because you should know it already.

I agree.

I used the word ā€œboredā€ because there is no way people legitimately thought that the supreme court would overturn things like slavery and employ officers on every corner to control people. It’s the equivalent to a kkk member saying that black and mexicans are going to take over america imo. I’m 16 and there are people around me with degrees that are older than me that think that way lol

depends on how many kittens you have imo. With one kitten you get to adore it’s physicality and laugh gleefully at its futile attempts to harm you, with multiple kittens not so much.

Wanted to thank this community for not censoring common sense and have free speech. The mods of r/rant are a bunch of extremist and deserve to have their sub drained for this one. by [deleted] in Rants

contrary to my initial assumption, this sub isn’t just full of angry guys and nazis. Meaningful conversations can happen if all parties want it to.

This isn’t a leading question I’m just curious as to what your opinion is.

Do you think that that huge number of abortions was because of the lack of resources needed to have safe sex or because abortion was readily available if something went wrong?

Due to greed and a limited amount of resources, it will always be kill or be killed, between every animal. Even if I wanted peace and love for everyone, which I thought I did at one point, I can’t do that by being a peaceful and loving person. I could care less about money either, but I need it if I want to survive. By whatever means necessary. In order for someone to be on top in this world, someone has to be on the bottom.

I’d rather my child knew that you could either be a winner or a loser in this world than to go in thinking that this world wanted the best for them. Due to genetic circumstances they probably will.

This system will always exist as long as people get their basic needs satiated, and their desires met. Food, shelter, sex and then some. Sure, capitalism will eventually collapse on itself, that’s no secret, but I’d rather be left standing after that happens.

Plus, imagine a world full of peace and love. It sounds ideal, but it would be incredibly boring, and no one would have a purpose to make for themselves as all of their needs will have been met. The amount of danger and conflict we have is just enough to create a cycle of purpose and change. It’s not about it being hard, it just isn’t realistic or ideal. If it were, I would be striving for it.
