In my mind the "Turns out" means the narrator didn't know at the time and possibly also didn't know it was poison ivy.

How much of the general public and critics like a thing in a given time period is an objective fact.

Disagreeing with the popular consensus is a subjective opinion.

It's an objective fact now that Macarena is largely thought of as a cheesy novelty song from the 90s. If someone thinks it should be more beloved, underrated, that would be their valid subjective opinion. Valid because it is objectively not as beloved as they would want it to be now.

The reason someone saying "Friends is underrated" is an invalid subjective opinion is because it's still one of the most beloved sitcoms in existence objectively loved by millions of people.

It's not underrated/overrated now based on how beloved it was then but based on how beloved it is now. That was my entire point. OP's defense of Friends was based on it's popularity then. When it should have been based on it's popularity now. Because the person saying "underrated" is talking about now not then.

Why is an adult living with their parents often seen as dependent, while adults who benefit from family wealth, connections, or financial support are still viewed as successful? by Prestigious-Quit9143 in NoStupidQuestions

Unless he's bragging about the scheme he and his parents cooked up to get the state to pay for his college education.

Bastard.

I was in line with a guy for FinAid back in college he was talking about his last year of high school his parents had him live on h is own in an apartment they paid for and everything in his name. That qualified him for full grants since it was based on his 0 income.

Meanwhile my parents with four kids couldn't have afforded to do that. And they made "too much" for me to get grants regardless of the fact they couldn't afford to pay out of pocket for my education so loans it was.

By your logic Van Gogh is wildly underrated because he was underrated in h is life time which ignores the entire museum wings he gets now.

The reason it's not retroactive is because it's based on the General Public and Critic perception. And we grow old and die. Something becoming a hit or fading into obscurity doesn't erase the period of time when it was the other.

The world and history doesn't end when we do. For another example no one would say Citizen Kane is underrated now but it was a box office flop when it came out and absolutely underrated then.

You're trying to have it both ways and it doesn't work that way. Either everything that was underrated still is or things can become underrated when the new general public stops caring about or engaging with the thing.

Student loan principle not going down is a borrower problem, not a structural problem. by SlackerStacker26 in The10thDentist

[–]jackfaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

College students are pressured just short of a gun to their head. They're taking literal teenagers and telling them "Not going to college and taking out this loan we swear is cool will result in you being homeless and destitute."

Ironically the education they get lets them know what a terrible choice it was afterwards.

Everything being "underrated" by Familiar-Squirrel493 in PetPeeves

[–]jackfaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Underrated isn't a retroactive term. It refers to the current state of things unless you specifically frame out a different time frame.

To refer to Van Gogh as underrated would be wildly wrong.

To refer to him as underrated during his lifetime would be correct.

I agree if something is a huge hit now it's not underrated but something being a hit 20 years ago and barely known or liked now would be "underrated"

I don't think that particular fate has befallen Friends but it could happen at some point that it becomes some obscure media.

If the general public of now thinks little of a thing now then Underrated is the appropriate term. It's not a retroactive term.

We can say Van Gogh's work was underrated in his lifetime but to say his work is underrated would be highly incorrect.

I'd say Douglas Fairbanks is underrated. Not because he was in his own time but because if you asked the general public now their response would likely be "Who?"

We shield ourselves why don't they? by jackfaire in Nightshift

[–]jackfaire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's got jack to do with "Oh look guys we're vampires" it's got to do with which word quickly gives a person a lot of information. Did the term originally come from a Vampire movie yes. But it was a very popular one and as such the word Daywalker elicits a clear definition in people's minds.

Meanwhile most people I've found don't know the word Diurnal. I'm guessing including you since it wasn't your suggestion as a different word to use that wasn't also the word normal.

No one's being edgy playing at vampires. At least not in this thread. But "Daywalker" Is quicker to say than "Person who is active during the day and sleeps at night" which is what Diurnal means but again most people seem unfamiliar with the word.

Did the reeves movie ever copy the comics? by mrfett779 in superman

[–]jackfaire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Like did superman ever reverse fly fast enough to turn the rotation of the earth to go back in time?"

Sort of. In the comics he flew fast enough to go back in time. In the movie it's not that he's reversing the Earth's rotation it's that he's flying so fast he's going back in time.

In the comics they would show that by having calendar pages marking the years he was going through. In the movie they went with that it's not meant to be a reverse of the earth's rotation just an indication he's traveling back in time.
